The 2026 BYD Dolphin G DM-i is Europe's first plug-in hybrid supermini, and it might be the most sensible small car BYD has made yet. Charge it overnight and it runs up to about 105 km on electricity alone, enough for most people's whole week. Then, on a long trip, a 1.5-litre petrol engine takes over and the combined range stretches past 1,000 km, so range anxiety simply never enters the picture. It is also the first BYD designed for Europe and built in Hungary.
Inside, a big central touchscreen rotates from landscape to portrait, a trick borrowed from far pricier BYDs, and the flat Blade-battery floor frees up a surprisingly roomy cabin and a 425-litre boot. The honest catch: the full electric range only comes on the dearer big-battery trims, while the entry Active manages about 40 km. A cheaper MG3 Hybrid undercuts it, but that car cannot plug in at all.
