Reasons for going ultralight:
1. I’m small and getting smaller
Since starting my backpacking journey, I’ve lost roughly 20-25 lbs.
At around 140 lbs If I’m carrying a 35 lb pack, that’s ¼ of my body weight.
Going ultralight just seems more practical. Maybe essential as the years go by.
2. Cover more distance in less time
Since the majority of my trips are overnight trips, I want to cover more ground in less time.
One of my goals is making it to Mississippi Lake for an overnight trip. It’s roughly 17-18 miles to get there. If I start the hike early I could pull it off with a heavier loadout, but lightening the load would help a lot.
3. I want to start running
I’ve always hated running but it’s something I’ve been wanting to get into lately.
Both my brothers have been entering 5k’s. My oldest nephew has been a huge influence on me with his running and Boy Scout hiking trips. I want to be able to keep up with my niece and nephews.
4. Legs feel ready
I’ve taken steps to change my walking gait and strengthen my legs by transitioning to barefoot style shoes a few years ago.
Since then I’ve been working on hip and ankle mobility. I feel my posterior chain is strong enough to try jogging.
---
I figured I could get into running by trying fastpacking. It’s basically running with a running vest but has the capacity of a backpacking pack. Since running while backpacking falls in line with going ultralight, might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
I also wanted to work on strengthening my core and vest style shoulder straps helps target that area.
