The Japanese American National Museum will welcome the Year of the Rabbit with cultural performances, crafts, and activities for families and kids of all ages on Sunday, January 8, 2023. If you’re not able to attend in person, join us online for performances streamed live with Kodama Taiko (mochitsuki demonstration), Yuki Yasuda (koto), Kuniharu Yoshida (calligraphy dance performance), and Cold Tofu (improv comedy). See livestream schedule below!
SCHEDULE:
11:30 a.m.–12 p.m. — Koto Performance
Los Angeles-based musician Yuki Yasuda will play the koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.
12:30 p.m.–1 p.m. — Mochitsuki Demonstration
Making fresh mochi is a beloved Japanese new year tradition. Join Kodama Taiko for their unique mochitsuki (rice pounding) demonstration, which incorporates taiko drumming.
1:15 p.m.–1:45 p.m. — Calligraphy Dance Performance
Calligrapher and dancer Kuniharu Yoshida collaborates with artists to combine sublime arts, merging traditional with the contemporary.
2 p.m.–3 p.m. — Cold Tofu Improv and Comedy Group
Enjoy a performance by the nation's longest running, Asian-American improv and sketch comedy group Cold Tofu as they improvise scenes and games based on audience suggestions.
