After discovering Stanley Hayami’s 1940s diary in a garage, family members realized the San Gabriel teenager’s vivid writing and artwork should be shared with others. Stanley is 16 when he writes about his family being forcibly moved to a Wyoming concentration camp for people of Japanese descent. He also dreams of a brighter future, and how best to serve his country. Stanley’s diary is uniquely American; the inspiration for JANM’s exhibition, “A Life in Pieces: The Diary and Letters of Stanley Hayami.” This short video features family members of Stanley Hayami reflecting on the diary.
