The process used to extract not only a pipe nipple, but a pipe nipple made of a sintered material, presumable brass or bronze.
The process involved cutting away as much as possible of the damaged nipple using a bolt extractor, since a purpose - made nipple extractor would not fit in the garbage nipple.
The bolt extractor bit into the material of the fitting, however, instead of extracting it, it pulverized the material. I continued this process until I began to bite into the threads of the tank bung with the extractor.
At this point, I began using a 1/4 NPT tap to cut the remaining material out of the original threads. After clearing all of the material, I made a final pass with the tap in order to ensure a clean mating surface for the new STEEL pipe nipple.
