Author Benjamin Woolley considers how the combination of affordable camcorders, PCs with enough grunt to run digital video editing software, and growing internet access might lead to a broadcasting revolution. To demonstrate, he gives The Net's professional production crew the day off, and - armed with just a handheld camera and a Desktop PC - attempts to make a segment for the show on his own.

Could this be the beginning of the democratisation of video? Will we one day all run our own media empire?
