The 1978 Swedish Grand Prix is one of the most famous races in Formula 1 history, primarily due to the debut and only race of the Brabham BT46B "fan car". Held on 17 June 1978 at the Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp, it was the eighth round of the 1978 World Championship and remains the last Swedish Grand Prix held to date.
Race Summary
Winner: Niki Lauda (Brabham-Alfa Romeo).
Podium: Riccardo Patrese (Arrows-Ford) in 2nd and local hero Ronnie Peterson (Lotus-Ford) in 3rd.
Pole Position: Mario Andretti (Lotus-Ford) with a time of 1:22.058.
Fastest Lap: Niki Lauda (1:24.836).
The "Fan Car" Controversy
Designed by Gordon Murray, the Brabham BT46B featured a large fan at the rear. While Brabham claimed its primary purpose was engine cooling, the fan effectively sucked air from beneath the car, creating immense downforce.
Dominance: After Mario Andretti's engine failed on lap 47, Lauda cruised to a commanding victory, finishing 34.6 seconds ahead of second place.
Legacy: Although the car was deemed legal for this specific race and the victory stood, it was voluntarily withdrawn by team owner Bernie Ecclestone following intense protests from other teams. The BT46B retired with a 100% win record.
