Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was born on February 5, 1911, in Stora Tuna, Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden. He was a Swedish tenor and one of the leading operatic singers of the 20th century. Björling appeared for many years at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and, less frequently, at major European opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London and La Scala in Milan. He sang the Italian, French, and Russian opera repertory with taste. On March 15, 1960, Björling suffered a heart attack before a performance of La Bohème at Covent Garden. Despite his condition, he insisted on singing, and continued to make performances until his death. On September 9, 1960, aged 49, he died due to heart-related issues. He was survived by his wife of 35 years, Anna-Lisa Björling, a Swedish opera singer and actress.

Note: The first 78 RPM record came into existence around 1894, and in 1912 the Gramophone Company established 78 Rotations Per Minute as their recording standard. The production of shellac records continued throughout the 78 rpm era, with "non-breakable" 78 rpm vinyl records being introduced in the 1940s. The popularity of the 33 1/3 rpm "Long Play" record, initially released in 1948, caused the 78 rpm record to become obsolete before the end of the 1950s. As these 78 rpm recordings are quite old, they may contain derogatory language and/or negative stereotypes. It is important to evaluate such recordings within their historical context and consider them as a reflection of the attitudes prevalent at the time.
