Frederick Martin was born December 9, 1906 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an American bandleader and tenor saxophonist. Raised largely in an orphanage and by various relatives, Martin started out playing drums before switching to saxophone. The Martin band recorded first for Columbia Records in 1932, but switched to Brunswick Records after one session and remained with that label till 1938. In 1938, he signed with RCA Victor and was assigned to Bluebird. For Martin, real success came in 1941 with an arrangement from the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B♭ minor which Martin recorded instrumentally, but soon lyrics were added by Ray Austin, and it was re-cut as "Tonight We Love" with Clyde Rogers' vocal, It was a huge hit, selling over one million copies by 1946, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. Martin continued leading his band into his 70s. He died, aged 76, on September 30, 1983 in Newport Beach, California.

Note: The first 78 RPM record came into existence around 1894, and in 1912, the Gramophone Company established 78 rpm as their recording standard. The production of shellac records continued throughout the 78 rpm era, with "non-breakable" 78 rpm vinyl records being introduced in the 1940s. The popularity of the 33 1/3 rpm "Long Play" record, initially released in 1948, caused the 78 rpm record to become obsolete before the end of the 1950s. As these 78 rpm recordings are quite old, they may contain derogatory language and/or negative stereotypes. It is important to evaluate such recordings within their historical context and consider them as a reflection of the attitudes prevalent at the time.
