What happened here 193 years ago today? On July 4th, 1832, Major John Mitchell—a veteran of the War of 1812—hosted a celebration at his mill in what is now Harris County, Georgia. Today, we return to that very area, nearly two centuries later, to visit his grave and remember the man behind one of the earliest July 4th celebrations in west Georgia.
Born in 1783, just after the American Revolution, Mitchell served in the War of 1812 and eventually settled in Georgia. Though his story has been mostly forgotten, a rare 1832 newspaper recounts a July 4th gathering held at Mitchell’s Mill—just a short distance from where he was later buried. That article offers a rare glimpse into how communities celebrated independence and honored veterans in the early days of the republic.
