Ernest Arthur Lough was a British chorister who was billed on his recordings as the "Boy Soprano". Born on November 17, 1911 in Forest Gate, Essex, England, Lough gained recognition at the age of 14 when he recorded Hear My Prayer and O, For The Wings Of A Dove (Mendelssohn), for the label HMV (released 1927), and it became one of the first classical records to sell a million copies. His rendition of "O for the Wings of a Dove" remains an enduring contribution to classical and religious music. Ernest Lough died on February 22, 2000, age 88, in Watford, Hertfordshire, England.
Sir George Thomas Thalben-Ball (1896–1987) was an English organist, conductor, and composer. Born on June 18, 1896, in Sydney, Australia, he moved to England as a child. Thalben-Ball served as the organist and choirmaster at the Temple Church in London from 1923 to 1982, earning acclaim for his musical contributions. He held the post of Birmingham City Organist from 1937 to 1987, becoming a prominent figure in the British musical scene. Thalben-Ball was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1967 and was knighted in 1982. He died on January 18, 1987, in England, at the age of 90.
Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828) was an Austrian composer born on January 31, 1797, in Himmelpfortgrund, now a part of Vienna. He displayed an early aptitude for music and began composing at a young age. Schubert's extensive body of work includes over 600 vocal and instrumental compositions, with a focus on lieder (German art songs). Despite facing financial challenges during his life, he made significant contributions to the Romantic era of music.
Schubert's compositions include the famous "Unfinished Symphony" (Symphony No. 8 in B minor) and the "Trout Quintet" (Piano Quintet in A major). He also wrote numerous lieder, such as "Erlkönig" and "Ave Maria." Schubert's work had a profound influence on later composers, and his impact on the development of the art song is particularly noteworthy. The composer's health deteriorated in his final years, and he died on November 19, 1828, at the age of 31, in Vienna. Schubert's posthumous recognition grew, solidifying his reputation as one of the important composers of the 19th century.
Note: The first 78 RPM record came into existence around 1894, and in 1912 the Gramophone Company established 78 rotations per minute as their recording standard. The production of shellac records continued throughout the 78 rpm era, with "non-breakable" 78 rpm vinyl records being introduced in the 1940s. The popularity of the 33 1/3 rpm "Long Play" record, initially released in 1948, caused the 78 rpm record to become obsolete before the end of the 1950s. As these 78 rpm recordings are quite old, they may contain derogatory language and/or negative stereotypes. It is important to evaluate such recordings within their historical context and consider them as a reflection of the attitudes prevalent at the time.
