Black MIDI Comparisons are intended to showcase performance of community members’ computers in an application called Piano From Above. These comparisons have been in use for around 10 years in the community. This is the largest comparison I have ever created - I chose to use 30 (6x5) runs so I could use space at the top and bottom for MIDI info. Additionally, I decided to make the comparison in 1:1 scaling, meaning the raw resolution of the video is 11520x6480. I had to use Cheat Engine again to force my video editor above the resolution limit. There were very few issues with the hack, but some gaussian blur effects had to be adjusted due to the high values. All participants were required to submit runs in high-bitrate 1080p60 resolution in order to preserve the scaling. The audio was created in FL Studio using a few tricks I learned over the years to create the best audio possible.
This is what all comparisons should look like.

*Analysis:*
Septette for the Dead Princess (Also known as RST) 44.7 Million is very similar to previous versions of the MIDI in terms of crash styling. There are no massive sustain bombs (high polyphony), but the crashes get their strength from the large number of notes being played each second. This means that newer CPUs will generally perform better than older ones with few exceptions. The latest generations of Intel CPUs perform the best so far, likely due to a combination of high clockspeeds (over 5GHz), large L2 cache banks (2MB per core), and an optimized architecture. Although the latest Zen 4 chips from AMD feature improve upon the previous generation with double the L2 cache (1MB per core vs 512KB in Zen 3) and much higher clockspeeds, they seem to perform closer to Intel's 12th generation chips. Since this MIDI has a maximum of 7,627 polyphony, there is very little usage of the highest bank of cache, meaning that the L3 cache in the latest chips goes mostly unused.

*Side Notes:*
Mitchell MIDI's 3400G system utilizes integrated graphics, meaning that only 14GB of system memory is usable by the operating system. MIDI performance may suffer as a result.
TheWonder[WP]'s 7100U run was performed with just 12GB ram, resulting in noticeable pagefile lag.
Yun's 5.2GHz 7700K system performs on levels unseen on Skylake based systems. I need to compare with similarly clocked systems to ensure legitimacy.
Pat139's 1165G7 massively underperforms, likely due to some form of pagefile lag.

*Reflection:*
30 members is too many people in a comparison. I have found that around 16-20 members is the easiest to follow, much easier to edit, and easy to find people for. Additionally, VSDC gets extremely slow with 30 videos on screen, to the point where I needed to prerender sections of the video to replace sections of the final video. Lastly, 12K resolution is hard to work with; I had to downscale all my test exports to 4K resolution to play the video back because VLC won't even generate a video stream from it (even with software encoding), so I had to either use FFPlay, which resulted in about 5FPS playback on my overclocked R9 5900x, or spend 2 hours downscaling the video to 4K. Yikes. I think for any future comparisons, I will limit the video quality to 8K resolution max.

[Black MIDI] Aua Ah Ah Community Merge / PFA No Lag

LucasMIDI 2022-07-16 | This is the most powerful MIDI ever showcased in unmodified PFA. No OCR/OR was used, and there was no sketchy stuff involved. This video was created in part using a python script (as seen here: youtu.be/4liw7Sk5Qmk ). However, it was modified to not lag, making this video possible. FAQ:
This video is 4k, but PFA's timer box looks like 1080p
I used 200% scaling in windows, so everything looks larger.
The MIDI is over 2GB, so you used OR, right?
Nope! I have a private MIDI compression utility that somehow compresses MIDIs so they are smaller. It keeps the same note count, but makes the file smaller. The limit for 2GB MIDI files with compression is about 300-350 million notes (depending on the MIDI).
Why is the FPS refreshing so fast?
Each frame was screenshotted using an external python script, so each frame has a different FPS value.
Why does the FPS stay on 8.8 at around 1:27 and the end of the video?
This is a result of an OmniMIDI speedhack glitch which freezes PFA's FPS window for some reason. Here is a showcase video: youtu.be/svn6YzZCzS4
Why did you use OmniMIDI speedhack if the video is screenshotted?
The end of the MIDI glitches out when the MIDI is skipped, so the ending section was recorded at 0.001 speed. Here is a showcase video: youtu.be/LLz61ifbKyM
Why is there a section of normal FPS after the crash?
I screenshotted the crash twice due to lag. The second screenshots were done after the FPS was glitched to 8.8, and I mixed the 2 together to remove all lag.

If you need further explanation, I suggest you watch this video, or the original video listed below. it also has frickin 3 sustain crashes at the end lmfao. ofc none of them are currently passable so they all merge into one mega crash. nice. also rip channel management in the midi, but that is easily fixable.

LucasMIDI 2022-06-16 | This MIDI took 220GB of ram and pagefile to load. I distinctly remember trying to render this multiple times throughout the past ~3 years; I gave up once after 3 WEEKS of loading on my old Core 2 Quad system, my FX-4130 system was no better, and I lost about 3% of my old SSD's lifespan trying to use it as pagefile lol.
I used a cheap 120GB SSD as pagefile to compliment my ram to successfully load and render this MIDI in UMP within 8 hours.

[Black MIDI] Introverted / 113.9 Million / No Lag

LucasMIDI 2022-03-26 | I downloaded this MIDI immediately after it came out but never got around to making a video until a while ago. This video was completed on February 23, 2022. On another note, this MIDI is incredibly difficult to create clean audio for. The velocities are super unbalanced to the point where I had to almost mute tracks so they wouldn't overpower the entire MIDI. I employed almost every audio trick I know when I made the audio, including splitting tracks, volume editing, custom limiters, custom real-time renders, and advanced FL effects.

[Black MIDI] The Black Bomb 2 / Update 25 / No Lag

LucasMIDI 2022-02-27 | The Black Bomb 2 is here, and it brings not only an end to my 2+ month absence, but over 54 million notes containing multiple sustain crashes, new and unique art, and renditions on popular songs. The team has worked hard to perfect this MIDI, and hopefully it will be completed somewhat soon.
The Black Bomb went through concept stages dating back as far as 2019, but real progress began on January 13, 2021 when a dedicated TBB2 Server (discord.gg/Gjj679PqDz) was created. Progress took off right away, but slowed down around Update 20 due to many members being busy with school. I recently took up the task of preparing the MIDI for a public release which involved removing parts without transitions, unfinished/unfit songs, and other things. They might be added back as time passes and transitions are created.
I have created a great deal of updates for the song. Updates U2, U6, U10, U16, U20, U24, and U25 were all edited and finalized by me. I believe the song peaked at over 70 Million notes, but a few parts contained excessively overlapped art and some songs were removed, lowering the note count.
Most questions relating to the history and details of the MIDI are welcomed in the comments, and I will attempt to answer them as I am able to.

[Black MIDI] Fennesseys Theme / 148.5 Million / Legit Run

LucasMIDI 2021-10-16 | New MIDI by a newer creator in the MIDI community; they are showing major potential. This MIDI is somewhat powerful; the end section is sustained 5 million notes per second which lags my PC hard. It is also 2088 BPM, which means that I had to use a fast note speed to avoid invisible notes.

I am working on a very large no-lag (20M+ NPS crash) that still needs decent audio and needs to be edited, so that will likely be released next week or the week after due to school and working 16 hour weekends.

[Black MIDI] Septette for the Dead Princess 44.7 Million / No Lag

LucasMIDI 2021-10-02 | I finally recorded this MIDI after over 9 months since I recorded a legit run on my old Ryzen 5 2600 system (youtu.be/T2v4rQjmcag ). I was able to use 1% speed on the entire video so it is one single video recording. I am still experimenting with video editing; I won’t be getting a new GPU anytime soon so I am stuck with my 1650 Super which in turn means no DaVinci Resolve. However, I think this video turned out well despite using VSDC. I currently go to school 5 days a week and work ~8 hours on each of the other 2 days so I have little time to make videos. However, I have some ideas coming up for the future, so stay tuned!

Enjoy this legit run of a MIDI from 実況者シンク SINK, who is a newer member of the MIDI community and brings a blacking style that is similar to Kumakki. However, I think this MIDI (and his others) are just a bit too heavy on the spam and I would like to see more variation (in both art and melody) as well as variation in the heaviness (crash) area rather than plain overlaps + art spam as seen here.

This is the latest project that I have been working on; I am planning for this MIDI to be heavily audio based with some minimal art/crashes at the end. Obviously this MIDI will also be extremely heavy and hard to pass. This is one of the most recent test versions; I am currently on test 22. I will try to keep uploading as much as possible but I am currently working 30 hour weeks so I don't have much time to make videos.

[Black MIDI] PFA / LBSFS 215 Million / ALMOST No Lag

LucasMIDI 2021-07-24 | This video was recorded with a custom python script which essentially automates the PFA nolag process. It takes a screenshot, advances by 0.01666 seconds, takes another screenshot, compares to the first, and keeps going. HOWEVER... this MIDI is so powerful that it managed to break the script and caused a bunch of noticeable frame drops on the end section, so that's why this is "almost" no lag. I will probably use this method in the future for midis with heavy polyphonic crashes.

[Black MIDI] The Nuker 4 / U26 / No Lag

This video has been in progress for a good amount of time, but it failed *2* times before I got this acceptable video from it. The first MIDI was a FLP2MIDI export, but the tempo track was broken and the PFA recording was desynced throughout the video. You can watch it here: youtu.be/Ry16yn_KKwU
The second attempt was done with the screenshot method with a custom script. The screenshot method uses PFA's skip feature to advance by 0.01666 seconds (1/60 second) to record a perfect no-lag video. However, I soon found out that PFA's render engine dislikes large tempo changes, and the part at 1:44 transitions from 2088 BPM to 520 BPM, which essentially kills the engine (and provides effects like this where notes do not touch the keyboard https://i.imgur.com/C3r5bPS.png ). [Black MIDI] Two Faced Lovers 346 Million / No Lag

LucasMIDI 2021-06-26 | This is the largest single MIDI file that I have ever no-lagged. I tested some new recording methods with this video; it was recorded with over 13,000 screenshots. I did not want to sit at the computer and constantly press the screenshot button, so I set 2 autotypers to alternate between the right arrow (set to advance PFA by 0.01666666 seconds) and printscreen, which took a screenshot with sharex.
There were originally many laggy spots in the MIDI; I had to manually record a few sections, and the last section (about 3:05 to the end) was screenshotted manually due to extreme lag. Even with 20 second screenshot intervals, it was just too much lag for my PC lmao. This video took up quite a few hours of my time, and used my computer's time for multiple days.
I am working with scripts that basically automate the screenshot process (essentially autotimes the screenshots to detect when PFA updates the screen) so that I am able to make videos faster. I will likely use that method on future videos. However, the screenshot method sometimes fails due to PFA's time based rendering engine that has issues with large tempo changes, so it is not a complete replacement and recording videos is still necessary in some cases.

[Black MIDI] Two Faced Lovers 19.4 Million / 6 Way Legit Run Comparison

LucasMIDI 2021-05-22 | This is the final video in my triple comparison series. This one was harder to edit, since the audio of the MIDI is not necessarily ear pleasing, and basically killed soundgoodizer and my reverb VST effect. There are actually a few audio desync issues that show up in the video (slight delay before the X crash to compensate for individual audio delay) and there is a somewhat noticeable flange effect that I tried my best to remove, but still shows up :/ This was originally going to be a 9 way comparison, but sadly I was unable to record enough runs that passed the crash. I hoped that my E6850 would be able to pass it (I ordered my E6850 and E5450 to add additional runs to the comparisons), but sadly the E6850 failed. There was also originally a Core 2 Duo E8135 and E8600 in this video, but the E8135 lagged much longer than the other runs and had desync issues so it was removed. The E8600 underperformed significantly, losing to the E8400 despite being about 500MHz higher than it, so it was also removed. I was left with a 6 way comparison that is shown here. Two Faced lovers is a notable MIDI because of it's "X" crash. The first 2 crashes are standard, boring crashes (in terms of MIDI) that are not commonly measured, but I measured them anyway. There is a mild stutter point before the X crash that puts stress on the GPU. A GTX 1660ti / Super is about the minimum GPU that can get 60FPS on it in 1080p. The "X" crash is one of the most recognizable crashes in any MIDI, ever. It lags every PC for at least a few seconds, and sometimes longer on older/lower end CPUs. It has about 40-50,000 polyphony, which means it needs about 6MB L2 or L3 crash to pass. Newer CPUs can pass it with 4MB, and some overclocked newer chips can pass it with just 3MB. I only included runs that could pass the first 3 crashes in this video.

[Black MIDI] Ouranos / 12 Way Legit Run Comparison

LucasMIDI 2021-05-15 | This is the second installment of my Comparison series; It was also the easiest to edit since it only has 2 crashes and 12 PCs, so 24 total crash times to type in and edit. Again, these runs are all from computers/CPUs that I own and have recorded. Most of the PCs/CPUs are either ones that I got for free, for cheap, or have had for a long time and only put to use recently. I have likely put at least 300 hours into all 3 comparisons, probably even more. Hopefully these are worth it.

Ouranos is a newer MIDI to the comparison arena, and it is one of the 5 MIDIs that I currently benchmark on all PCs that I own (Provided that they support 8GB Ram). The first crash is a combination of sustain (~20,000 polyphony) and Notes per Second (~2,000,000). Since it has 20,000 polyphony, it usually requires 4MB of usable cache to pass the first crash completely. Newer CPUs with 3MB now have enough power to pass it completely as well.
The second crash is pure note spam, and just requires pure power to pass it. Currently, only ryzen CPUs can pass it, along with high clocked Core i series chips. Since Core 2 chips have good sustain performance (Provided they have the cache) but not pure power, they struggle on the final crash.

[Black MIDI] 9KX2 / 16 Way Legit Run Comparison

LucasMIDI 2021-05-08 | After many months of collecting data, recording runs, editing, and finalizing, I have finally completed my set of comparisons. These are all from computers/CPUs that I own and have recorded. Most of the PCs/CPUs are either ones that I got for free, for cheap, or have had for a long time and only put to use recently. I have likely put at least 300 hours into all 3 comparisons, probably even more. Hopefully these are worth it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

9KX2 is an interesting MIDI. Most of the lag comes from pure overlap spam; the MIDI can be nolagged easily by removing the overlaps. Most of the heavy sections are a mix of medium polyphony amounts (2,000-5,000) and high-ish amounts of notes per second (50,000-300,000). When combined, these can lag every PC heavily and bring lower end PCs (Especially ones with potato graphics cards) to extreme lag. I only included PCs that could pass the first 2 crashes here; I do own quite a few other CPUs that are pure potato and are not worth even recording.
The final crash on the MIDI is the most interesting one of them all. It lags terribly on some CPUs (mainly everything before core 2, and Core 1st gen-4th gen, and everything before Ryzen) due to architecture errata. Interestingly, a high clocked Core 2 Duo can pass the final crash but a i7 4790k cannot.
Much of the rest of the MIDI is relatively bland (in terms of crashes) and does not require too much horsepower to pass. Generally this will mean at least 2MB cache and Core 2 speed.

Oh yeah, all 3 comparisons are in at least 4K resolution (Horizontally). This one is 5K (5120x2880), the next one is 5K ultrawide (5120x2160), and the last one is 4K Ultrawide (3840x1440). This made it significantly harder to edit the videos in VSDC (It doesn't like high resolutions that much), and I had to use custom techniques to bypass the resolution limit that was slightly over 4K to be able to create the 5K videos.

[Black MIDI] Unify / Final / No Lag

LucasMIDI 2021-04-09 | It is finally here after many PC difficulties and random issues. I had to sacrifice editing quality to make this video exportable or else resolve would just nope out (4K doesn't work too well on 4GB VRAM.)
Anyway, it is finished, so I hope y'all enjoy my PFA no-lag of this MIDI. I probably spent about 12 hours working on the audio midis and editing audio; some parts could still sound better but I am just out of time and patience to get them sounding even better so I hope they sound at least
somewhat good. I will probably do one more Unify video of my custom audio midi in the future, but I have yet to start on that video.
Forgot to mention that this took like 2 days to record and stuff. This video has been WIP since February 19th 2021.
P.S. I still have a large backlog of videos that are almost ready to be uploaded but just need editing/good audio including 3 comparisons, a TN4 video, and a TQP2 no-lag which will be released next Friday.

[Black MIDI] PFA / The Nuker 3 F3 / Legit Run

LucasMIDI 2021-03-15 | For years this was thought to be impossible in PFA... Loading the MIDI and getting the performance to a state like this...

This is the first ever successful legit run of The Nuker 3 F3 in Piano From Above. Pretty much no CPU has been powerful enough to be able to pass the thicc middle section (shanghai teahouse and krash notes) before the final part. But, my Ryzen 5 5600x is the first ever CPU to successfully take on and meet the challenge. I have actually been working on trying to make this possible for about a year now. I originally tried to export it in parts that were possible to legit run, and was unable to for a variety of reasons. Eventually I got FL to export a plausible array of parts that might be possible, although they would require MIDI compression, a large amount of ram, a very powerful CPU. At the time, I only had 32GB of ram and a Ryzen 5 2600, so it was really not possible. Later that year I upgraded to 64GB of ram and was able to compress the middle section to under 2GB. However, my 2600 was just not powerful enough to pass it (even at 4.1GHz). This year, I got my hands on Ryzen 5000, and I immediately realized that it might be possible to make this video happen. I started by loading the Middle section into PFA and letting it play through to remove pagefile lag, and then rewound it to the beginning. Then I hit record and ended up with this video. After it was recorded, I loaded and recorded the other parts, did some editing, and the rest is history.

You may notice that Part 2 is over 270 million notes and should not be able to be loaded into PFA. The actual MIDI was above 2GB, but I used a program that compresses MIDI files significantly so that they are loadable in MIDI players. Part 2 went from over 2GB to 1.7GB so that is is able to be loaded into PFA. It retains the note count and does not change the midi in any other way.
The MIDI initially had severe pagefile lag, but performing the anti-pagefile lag trick fixed it (playing the midi through and then rewinding it back to the beginning and playing it again) fixed it and it was passable.
I also was initially going to do it on my Ryzen 5 2600, but unfortunately it passed the midi about 30 seconds after it was finished. Therefore, I can conclude that you will need the following to do a successful legit run on this MIDI:
Ryzen 5000 CPU (or rocket lake CPU possibly)
and at least 64GB Ram (96+GB recommended for no pagefile lag)

[Black MIDI] PFA / The Nuker 3 F3 / Legit Run (Full Video)

LucasMIDI 2021-03-15 | The Full video of The Nuker 3 Final 3 Legit run. This video was over 50GB in size and took 2 days to upload to YouTube. You can see here just how the crash performs on my CPU. The actual crash is squished into 1 beat in the FLP, or 1/16th note in real time (since this is 522BPM). I ran the crash once on my Ryzen 5 2600 and it lagged for about 16 hours, but I must have accidentally pressed pause because it somehow got paused and therefore ruined the recording.

[Black MIDI] ooo 000 / Toilet Story 3 / Legit Run

LucasMIDI 2021-03-13 | This has been on my to-do list for some time now. I was originally planning on recording a legit run on this MIDI before I got my 5600x. Carlos told me that it took about a day to load on his 5800x, so I expected it to take like 2 days to load on my 2600. However, it took about 4 days to load for some reason. Maybe there was something in Zen 3 that optimized loading midis in PFA with a lot of tracks lmao. Anyway, I tried to get it to sound good but it still sounded bad (see video below). When I tried to adjust a profile in Ryzen Master, the whole system crashed and 4 days of loading vanished. I gave up until 2 days ago when I loaded it on my 5600x. It took about 16 hours to load and performed much better. I also got the audio to sound good by tweaking some settings in OmniMIDI.
Obviously, this is not minimum notespeed, so there is a lot more lag than there was in carlos' legit run on this. If you want to watch a minimum notespeed run, I have linked it below.
