Police in Barberton say a 17-year-old Akron boy was arrested Monday after gunfire erupted in the parking lot of McDonald’s, injuring multiple juveniles.
According to a statement from Barberton police public information officer Martin Eberhart, an officer on patrol heard gunshots coming from the McDonald's parking lot on 500 West Tuscarawas Avenue at approximately 1:30 p.m. Other officers were alerted and responded to the scene, while multiple 911 calls reporting the shooting were received shortly afterward.
Barberton officers obtained a description of the suspected shooter, who had fled the scene. One officer and his K-9 partner located the suspect walking between buildings in the 600 block of West Tuscarawas Avenue and took him into custody without incident at 1:36 p.m., police said.
The gun was recovered after police said the suspect threw it while fleeing. A check of the serial number showed the weapon had been reported stolen in Akron, per officials.
Officers at the McDonald's provided aid to the victims, while Barberton medics treated those who were injured. Police said no one suffered a direct gunshot wound, but two people were taken to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
