In 2020, the MN DNR Nongame Wildlife Program partnered with 5 other states and 2 countries to build up the Motus Network in the Midwest. Motus is an automated telemetry system of receivers that can track very lightweight, simple transmitters, allowing researchers to track birds, bats and even insects throughout their annual life cycle and over distances that were unimaginable only a decade ago. Kristin Hall, nongame wildlife program supervisor, will join us to talk about DNR research on the American Kestrel and “crowd sourced data” that are being collected across the motus network, advancing our understanding of many small, yet highly mobile, wildlife.
