I truly believe that if you sing or play sax, trumpet, drums, trombone, cello, or clarinet — and you want to go deep into the music and improvisation —
then at some point, it’s critical to explore the piano or keyboard.
And by playing piano, I don’t mean soul-less scale drills, sight-reading tests, or classical exam pieces you might not even care for...
All of that can reinforce the pernicious idea of competition and hierarchy in music. 👎
🎶 When I say piano playing, I mean keyboard investigation —
Discovering sounds, how notes fit together.
Singing while accompanying yourself...
Feeling the vibrations.
Experiencing the emotions that the mix of tones produces.
