This quiet patch of woods in Talbot County, Georgia, holds a history that had been forgotten for decades—until now. In this episode of Adventures Into History, Cecil and I visit a long-lost African American cemetery that contains more than 100 unmarked graves. Once part of the post-emancipation community, this sacred ground had faded from memory until Cecil rediscovered it during one of his cemetery surveys.
Though only a few headstones remain, each one tells a story—and the many sunken, unmarked graves speak just as powerfully. These cemeteries exist all over the South, hidden in the woods, overgrown, and undocumented. But they matter. These are people’s lives, their final resting places, and their legacy.
