YouTube began as a place for middle schoolers to congregate and tell weird stories with shoddy webcams. And then other middle schoolers or high schoolers would flock to it and watch these kids, sometimes replying with their own shoddy webcams. It also became a place where all the best random content of the internet was re-uploaded for quick and easy internet comedy. I don’t think anyone really anticipated that it would turn into a way to have a career, with several young adults reaching fame and building empires. In fact, people might’ve laughed at such a suggestion. But that’s exactly what happened as vlogs gained traction and people upgraded their editing equipment.
Productions began to have more and more polish and professionalism. Sooner or later it became the alternative media. There are all sorts of YouTube channels from beauty channels to gaming channels and reaction channels. But most of us who frequent the site know who the really famous ones are. And they draw in crowds by the droves, or millions actually, that are considered in the “millennial” age range.
