In today’s video, I’m creating painted papers for collage using 10 mixed media techniques you NEED to try. This process is colourful, messy, experimental, and so much fun — and you’ll walk away with a gorgeous collection of layered papers perfect for your mixed media work.
I begin with a sheet of mixed media paper covered with tea bag paper, giving me two painted surfaces at once. Then I dive in with the thick, luscious Mopa Posca paint markers in red, drawing bold marks across both layers. Next comes Golden High Flow in copper, adding flowing metallic lines, followed by spray inks in olive and fluid acrylics in orange.
On top of all this watery goodness, I sprinkle powdered pigments, misting everything with water so the colours bloom into beautiful, organic patterns. For extra shine, I add Izink Bronze Shimmer and Chinese Gold ink, creating rich golden highlights throughout the papers.
With so much colour moving around, you’ll want plenty of drying space — I lift the tea bag layer off the table and lay it on the floor, then continue spreading and shifting the inks and paints on the mixed media sheet beneath.
Once some layers are dry, I add a light spray of Liquitex spray paint through a stencil for pops of white pattern, scribble in contrasting colour with Gelato water-soluble crayons, and finish with a foam stamp in turquoise blue for added texture.
By the end, we’ve explored 10 amazing mixed media techniques — each one adding depth, colour, shimmer, and personality to your painted papers. These are perfect for collage, art journaling, card making, or any mixed media project.
