You pull a beautiful gel print from the plate… rich colour, gorgeous texture, perfect layers. And suddenly it feels too good to use. Too precious to cut. So it ends up sitting in a pile, waiting for the “right” moment.
In this video, I’m facing that fear head on. I’m taking two of my favourite gel plate prints and tearing straight into them to create a finished mixed media collage on canvas. These prints are full of warm earthy tones, layered textures, and a gel plate image transfer of a weathered, textured door. They’re beautiful on their own — but today I’m transforming them into something new.
Creativity requires courage. Sometimes the most powerful step we can take as artists is to stop protecting our materials and start trusting the creative process.
As I work, I’ll share how I decide where to tear, how I balance colour and movement, and how layering separate prints together creates a cohesive artwork with depth and story. This is intuitive collage — trusting the process, letting the composition unfold, and allowing the materials to guide the final piece.
