This is a collection of 6 short stories. She is, to some degree, a product of her environment, and her liberal use of the n-word can grate on our 21st-century ears. But her writing is beautiful and without sentimentality. There is tragedy and dark comedy in these stories. This is a snapshot of the American South coming to terms with integration. She does not tell pretty stories. She tells true stories, the stories of the heart, the stories underneath the stories. Her characters need to be redeemed as do we the readers.
She observes telling details.
My copy aptly has fallen apart and is n need of its own redemption.
The most well known story in this collection is Everything that Rises must converse. If you would like to hear an audio version of this story, Hannah of Hannah’s books reads the story on her channel, here is the link: youtu.be/gMx5kqalxgE?si=G1DQSgAf6tvIAuBd
