Finding Rare Mining Equipment in a Massive Abandoned Mine in Nevada (Part 3) Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-06-23 | Part 3 opens with a sketchy 300-foot climb up a steep ladder in this abandoned mine. Once on the upper level, we continued exploring the Polaris Mine by making our way through endless drift tunnels and stopes where we had to cross dangerous bridges with substantial drops underneath them. We also saw some stunning, amazing deposits of copper in one area of the mine. We also found another ore cart still on the tracks in one of the drifts. Finding Rare Mining Equipment in a Massive Abandoned Mine in Nevada (Part 2) Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-06-16 | The Polaris Mine is a massive abandoned mine with multiple levels, miles of drift tunnels, endless miners’ graffiti, and lots of impressive mining equipment left behind. It’s an explorer’s dream! Here in Part 2, we immediately found an old drill in spectacular condition that looked as if the last miner who was operating it simply turned it off while drilling a rock bolt and walked away. After a 150 foot ladder climb to an extensive upper level, we found a lot more miners’ graffiti from the 1910s and 1920s depicting themselves, their names, naked women, animals, and other things. We found more ore carts and an already unstable area of the mine that was seriously damaged further by a major 6.1 earthquake at the turn of the 20th century. The damaged part of the mine was still worked after the earthquake despite the heavy timbering throughout that section having been dangerously skewed to the left by the strong seismic forces (no safety regulations back then like there are today). We climbed a 200 foot ladder to another extensive level where we found even more dazzling miners’ graffiti! Further on, we found an area of the mine where the copper was literally leaching out of the walls and floor causing everything to be a stunning shade of turquoise-blue. To get to some of this equipment that you’ll see in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, we had to make our way through the Polaris Mine’s maze of flooded, branching tunnels and up several hundred feet of rickety, wooden ladders. Most of the mine was not flooded, however, which made things a lot easier. A bonus was all the incredible miners’ graffiti we discovered on the upper levels we explored. It was like an art gallery, and some of the graffiti was quite risqué! Exploring an Old Cemetery and Secluded Cabin From the 1800s Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-05-28 | Finding an old, almost forgotten cemetery in the middle of the desert is always kind of exciting! It seems that most of the people buried here were born in the mid to late 1800s and died in the early to mid 1900s. There seemed to be a lot of younger people buried here including several infants and people in their 20s. The old, abandoned miner’s cabin was another sweet find! Exploring the Horton Mine’s Flooded Cousin — and She’s Bigger and More Dangerous Than Him! Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-05-25 | The haunted Horton Mine. Did I really explore that abandoned mine ten years ago? Sure did! To commemorate the 10 year anniversary of my first visit to the Horton Mine, I got together with Justin from @ABANDONEDUNDERGROUND9 , Todd from @ZiaMountainAdventures , and Joe from @OnTheNextEpisode to explore its flooded cousin that only a few people have been brave enough (or insane enough) to venture into. And boy oh boy – she is much bigger and more dangerous than he ever was! What has kept her out of the limelight is the fact that she’s deeply tucked away high on a rugged canyon wall by herself at the end of a barely visible, washed-out road. In fact, we discovered a fallen tree across the road that blocked our steep ascent to the mine. Therefore, we had to park and hike the rest of the way in. Unlike the Horton Mine, her main haulage tunnel is at least a half a mile long with some extensive drifts tunnels leading off of it. Like the Horton Mine, she has an ore pass at the very back that connects to an extensive upper mine. As we explored, we came across creepy black ooze coming out of the tunnel walls, leftover mining artifacts from long ago, fantastically colored veins of ore, unusual mineral formations, and a lot of knee-deep water everywhere! ***********NOTE: This video was shot in stunning 4K resolution! Finding a Most Unusual Abandoned Mine in the Middle of Nowhere Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-05-17 | This was quite a rare find! While hiking through the desert recently, I came across an abandoned mine at the mouth of a ravine. Nothing about the mine seemed special as I made my way towards it. Once I removed the tumbleweeds that had accumulated in the entrance, I noticed an immediate two-way split with a tunnel going off to the left and a tunnel going off to the right. As I sat there in the entrance pondering which branch to take first, I was unaware of a very unusual feature of this mine that was hidden in plain sight. I only discovered this feature after I explored the right-hand tunnel and was making my way back towards the entrance to explore the left-hand tunnel. Risky Underground Exploration of the Abandoned Valdez Mine Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-04-19 | How old is old? 120 years? That’s how old the abandoned Valdez Mine is! An abandoned mine that old is definitely worth exploring and documenting, so I got together with Jeff from @otgexploring and hiked up a steep mining road to visit the Valdez Mine. Silver and gold were mined there back in 1903 and from 1911 to 1913 making the Valdez Mine a pretty decent producer for its time! Unboxing My New BW Clip Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Detector Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-03-31 | “Bad air” is no joke. It can kill you within seconds, and it’s one of the inherent dangers of exploring abandoned mines. Bad air exists whenever the air underground becomes oxygen-deficient or contains a buildup of hydrogen sulfide gas. There are other forms of bad air such as a buildup of methane gas, but low oxygen levels and the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas are the most common scenarios when exploring abandoned mines.How does one go about avoiding bad air while underground? This was a talc mine that dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. The entire mine is one colossal death trap full of collapse and danger. Ascending Steep Inclines to Upper Levels in an Abandoned Mine Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-02-17 | While exploring the upper levels in this abandoned mine, I found a blasting cap tin that had something very unusual in it – and it wasn’t a blasting cap! Jeff from @otgexploring and I also found some major evidence of seismic activity with wooden support timbers (stulls) that were literally bent and cracked at a 90° angle! Of course, everywhere we went in the mine we saw evidence of the miners’ handiwork including wooden retaining walls, ore chutes, endless stopes, and things like that. Encountering Low Oxygen Level in a Flooded Abandoned Mine Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-02-15 | Encountering low oxygen levels (what miners called “bad air”) is one of the risks of exploring flooded abandoned mines. When my oxygen meter activated in this mine, the oxygen level was at 17%. A reading of 15% or lower means it’s time to retreat. Justin from @ABANDONEDUNDERGROUND9 was with me for this exploration and had already passed through the tunnel before me without incident despite his oxygen meter sounding an alarm, too. A Tale of Terrifying Timbers in an Abandoned Death Trap Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-02-13 | The abandoned Gold Strike Mine was a complete death trap! Nearly every support timber holding up the ceiling was severely cracked, smashed, or bending. However, that didn’t discourage Jeff of @otgexploring and me from heading inside and checking it out. Gold and silver were mined at the Gold Strike Mine from the late 1800s until about 1950. It was a pretty big producer in its day. This mine features large, underground stopes (caverns) from which all the valuable ore was removed. As a result, the miners installed many vertical timbers of varying lengths into the stopes to hold up the unsupported ceilings. These support timbers are sometimes called “stulls.” Much of the Gold Strike Mine’s workings are just too dangerous to enter, and several areas are already caved-in.Jeff explored some areas in the Gold Strike Mine that I did not venture into. Reaching 430,000 Miles on my 2006 Toyota Corolla! Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-02-09 | It finally happened! The odometer on my 2006 Toyota Corolla turned over 430,000 miles! That is amazing!I bought my 2006 Corolla in October 2005 when it only had 6 miles on the odometer. Certain Toyotas from this era, however, have a glitch where the odometer freezes when it reaches 299,999 miles. Mine was no exception. Since then, I have been keeping track of the mileage by using one of the two trip odometers. Finding Two Muckers on a Lower Level in a Massive Abandoned Mine! Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-02-03 | Finding an intact mucker in an abandoned mine is quite rare. In this mine, we found two muckers on a lower level deep inside the mine! This clip comes from Part 3 of a three-part video series I did on this mine several years ago titled “Exploring Over 5000 Feet of Tunnels in a Massive, Abandoned Mine.” After our initial visit to this impressive mine, we learned that three miners were killed in a tremendous collapse on one of the lower levels decades ago. An Unexpected Encounter With Another Explorer at an Abandoned Talc Mine Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2023-01-14 | I recently set out across the desert on a dark, cold, moonless night to explore a small, abandoned mine up in the hills. An hour later I reached the talc mine and found a large, gaping entrance that led downward into a stope. Once I made my way down the inclined entryway and was inside the stope, I suddenly heard noises coming from outside the mine! I turned around to determine what was causing the commotion in the mine’s entrance and was surprised to see another explorer named Jon step through!Jon is prolific on TikTok. His account there is deathvalleyblondy. He’s got some videos of abandoned mines on there as well as other things. The “blondy” in deathvalleyblondy refers to his dog Blondy who passed away last year. How to Fix Not Being Notified of New Videos From Your Subscriptions Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2022-11-19 | Frustrated and fed up with NOT receiving notifications when new videos are uploaded to channels that you’re subscribed to? This seems to be a common problem, and many of my own subscribers have told me that they aren’t notified when I upload new videos. How can we fix this?I did some research and found out that setting up the notification procedure is a bit more complicated than simply hitting the SUBSCRIBE button on a channel you enjoy and turning on notifications in your YouTube channel settings. Exploring the Curviest Abandoned Mine and its Mountain Lion Kill Zone Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places 2022-11-05 | A kill zone, a carcass, a cathedral ceiling, and countless curves are featured in this abandoned mine exploration video. The Simon Mine in northern Nevada was worked from the 1890s until the 1930s. It was a large producer of both silver and gold, and historical records indicate that $700,000 worth of ore was removed from this mine. Adjusted for inflation, that would be roughly equal to $23,000,000 today. That’s quite a haul! In this video, I explore one of the Simon Mine’s six levels. This level featured some of the curviest tunnels I have ever been in. It also featured some rare, pristine timbering overhead that resembled a vaulted ceiling or a cathedral ceiling. Timbering like that is definitely a lost art form!After I exited the mine, I noticed the large skeletal remains of a cow carcass scattered nearby. In the mud I could see a variety of paw prints from mountain lions and coyotes who had been coming up to the kill zone to feast on the large bones of the cow carcass.
