Implications of the 2024 Election on Health Policy UCSF Department of Medicine 2024-10-11 | The upcoming 2024 election has profound implications for health policy, and we can think of no better national expert to discuss this with than Ashish Jha, currently Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. Ashish served as White House COVID-19 Coordinator in 2022-2023, and was director of Harvard’s Global Health Institute from 2014-2020. Ashish, who was a UCSF resident and chief resident in the late 1990s, is arguably the nation’s leading expert in evidence-based healthcare policy. Exploring Barriers to Giving and Receiving Feedback in the DOM UCSF Department of Medicine 2024-06-11 | Effective feedback is a cornerstone of medical education, but the culture around feedback seems to have changed in recent years. Clinicians and educators know that time constraints, workload pressures, and hierarchical structures can all impede constructive feedback and productive exchanges with trainees. In this Grand Rounds, medical education experts Brian Schwartz, Bridget O’Brien, Griffin Plattner, and Jackeline Vajta will explore the barriers to productive feedback within the DOM, followed by a panel discussion offering trainee and faculty perspectives on improving the culture of feedback at UCSF and beyond.SpeakersBrian Schwartz, MD, professor of medicine, is an infectious disease specialist, with a focus on infections in immunocompromised patients. He serves as the Associate Chair for Education for the Department of Medicine. Bridget O’Brien, PhD, is a professor of medicine and an education scientist in the Office of Medical Education's Center for Faculty Educators. As co-director of the Teaching Scholars Program and the UCSF-University of Utrecht Health Professions Education doctoral program, she teaches and mentors faculty and learners interested in education research and scholarship. She also directs the Advanced Fellowship in Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research based at the SFVA. In 2015, she was selected as one of five national Macy Faculty Scholars supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and in 2021, Bridget was selected as a KIPRIME Fellow at the Karolinska Instituet. Griffin Plattner, MD, received his bachelor’s degrees in business management and chemical engineering from the University of Florida. He then earned his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis before completing a primary care medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Griffin is now a National Clinical Scholars Fellow at UCSF with research interests in medical education, community-based healthcare delivery, and health equity. Updates in Valvular Heart Disease Assessment and Management 2024:A Multidisciplinary Approach UCSF Department of Medicine 2024-06-01 | Treatment of complex valvular heart disease has changed dramatically over the last decade, illustrated by both advances in open-heart surgery and the advent of minimally invasive approaches. In this Grand Rounds, we will hear from a cardiac surgeon, interventional cardiologist, and non-invasive cardiologist about their multidisciplinary approach to complex valvular disease. We’ll also learn about current guidelines for the management of mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valvular disease.SpeakersTobias Deuse, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon, is director of minimally invasive cardiac surgery at UCSF. He is well known for developing minimally invasive techniques for mitral valve repair, as well as innovative approaches to heart failure surgery (most notably minimally invasive techniques for implanting ventricular assist systems and mitral valve repair utilizing fully robot-assisted endoscopic surgery). Deuse’s honors include election to the board of directors of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. Sammy Elmariah, MD, MPH, is an interventional cardiologist specializing in caring for patients with valve disease, coronary artery disease, and adult congenital heart disease. He is a leader in transcatheter heart valve procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (MitraClip and TEER), mitral valve replacement (TMVR), and new approaches for tricuspid valve disease. His research focuses on the prediction and optimization of clinical outcomes of patients with aortic stenosis and after TAVR. This year's Holly Smith lecturer, Dr. Holly J. Humphrey, is an international leader in medical education who is currently President and CEO of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. Her work has influenced the national dialogue in medical education in areas such as diversity and inclusion, mentoring, and professional identity formation. Dr. Humphrey will offer her views on the current status of medical education and how it needs to evolve to meet trainees’ and society’s needs.The annual Holly Smith Visiting Professorship is the Department of Medicine’s most prestigious yearly lectureship. Much of this progress has been catalyzed by a new understanding of the pathophysiology of ILD, including the role of cellular aging in pulmonary fibrosis. Diagnosis: Teaching, Measuring, Innovating UCSF Department of Medicine 2024-04-26 | The critical thinking required to diagnose a patient’s condition is fundamental to our work as internists. Yet if done poorly, diagnostic errors and inequities can deeply harm patients – in fact, studies have shown that several hundred thousand patients die or suffer major harm from diagnostic mistakes each year. In this Grand Rounds, we’ll have three expert faculty explore fundamental issues in diagnosis, each seen through their specialized lenses of research, informatics, and education. In this Grand Rounds, we will explore novel therapies, such as the use of immune effector cells in hematological malignancies.
