What David said to his would-be attacker was the last thing the man was expecting, and it transformed the situation.--Transcript: At Howard University in the Spring of 1960, lunch counters throughout the south of this country were segregated. And so we went to what was called “People’s Drugstore” (but segregated!). They were only going to serve white people, and I was with my black friends. So they closed the lunch counter and gave us nothing to eat. So we sat there for two days. It was the most challenging two days of my life. People would punch us in the stomach so hard we would fall on the floor and then they would kick us. And each time—we’d gone through nonviolence training—we would try to respond in a loving, nonviolent, caring way. The Power of Loving Your Enemy My name’s David Hartsough. I’m from San Francisco, California. I’m a member of San Francisco Friends Meeting and I would say my passion and most of my life—since meeting Martin Luther King when I was 15 years old—has been peace and justice and promoting helping people deepen their commitment and understanding of nonviolence, and how we can transform this world from greed and violence and militarism and racism, environmental destruction into a life that I think God would like us to live, which is just and peaceful and care for all of creation. Why Nonviolent Action? I’ve chosen nonviolence and nonviolent action as a means of social change partly because I believe that we’re all God’s children. We’re all brothers and sisters, and an injury to any person is an injury to me. We’re all related. So it’s morally right and it’s trying to walk our talk that love is not just something to talk about with your little family—the world is our family. Putting Quakerism into Practice I think the essence of Jesus’ message is to love another, and even love our enemy. So we really need to put that into practice in our own lives and our work. It’s not something we do one hour a week at the meetinghouse on Sunday, it’s really how we relate to one another and our families and our communities and our nation and the world. Seeking That of God in Our Enemies I think a challenge for me and all of us as Friends is to seek out that of God in one another with our friends and neighbors and with the “enemy.” I don’t think there’s some people that have that of God in them and there’s some people that are totally evil. That’s what our government and many governments teach the people, is “we’re the good guys and they’re the bad guys.”I think Martin Luther King called it the Beloved Community, and when we talk about the kingdom of God, what are our challenges to help build that kingdom, that brotherhood here on Earth? That’s a very important part of what being a Quaker means. The Lunch Counter Protest (Spring, 1960) Toward the end of the second day I heard a guy come up from behind me saying, “If you don’t get out of the store in two seconds, I’m going to stab this through your heart.” In his hand was a switchblade. I had two seconds to decide, well, do I really believe in nonviolence and the power of love? Or is there some other way I should be dealing with this guy? But I only had two seconds to think about it, and we’d had a lot of practice, so I just looked him in the eye and said, “Well, Friend, do what you believe is right but I’ll still try to love you.” And it was quite amazing—I was just 21 years old at the time—his jaw began to drop, and his hand was shaking with the knife, which began to fall, and he turned around and left the store. The first path is made by walking with nature, co-creating and co-producing with sensitivity, intelligence and care with diverse species, the living earth and her complex web of life. This is the path of life which has sustained humanity in its diversity over millennia. Each community and culture has co-evolved its own distinctive path according to its climates, soils and biodiversity, and contributed to the diversity of food and farming systems. The diversity of cultures of food and agriculture are united through the common and perennial principles on which life is based. Today these common principles practised by diverse schools of ecological agriculture--organic farming, permaculture, biodynamic farming, natural farming, etc.--are referred to as Agroecology. This is the path to the future. The second path is the industrial path based on fossil fuels and poisons. This path is the path of death. It goes against the principles of nature and life. It violates the principle of diversity and imposes monocultures and uniformity. It violates the principle of giving back and extracts from nature and farmers, disrupting ecological sustainability and social justice. It is the path to biodiversity extinction and climate catastrophe, of destruction of small farms and displacement of farmers, and the spread of hunger, malnutrition and chronic diseases. Walking further and faster down the path of extinction is not an intelligent choice. Ecological agriculture is an ethical, ecological and survival imperative. Dr. Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned scholar and tireless crusader for economic, food, and gender justice. Dr. Shiva was trained as a physicist, and later shifted her focus to interdisciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy. In 1982, she founded an independent institute, the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which was dedicated to high quality and independent research to address the most significant ecological and social issues of our times in close partnership with local communities and social movements. In 1991, she founded Navdanya, a national movement in India to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, and to promote organic farming and fair trade. Edward Said - Orientalism as a Tool of Colonialism Film For Justice 2021-06-06 | Edward Said's book, Orientalism, tries to answer the question of why, when we think of the Middle East, we have a preconceived notion of what kind of people live there - what they believe, how they act - even though we have never even been there, or indeed, even met anyone from there. Orientalism asks, "How do we come to understand people, strangers, who look different to us, by virtue of the color of their skin?" Said argues that the way the West - Europe and the U.S. - looks at the countries and peoples in the Middle East is through a lens that distorts the actual reality of those places and those people. He calls this lens through which we view that part of the world "Orientalism": a framework that we use to understand the unfamiliar and the strange, to make the peoples of the Middle East appear different and threatening. But Edward Said's coming of age was in a hot moment. Not just in the States, but around the world. And Edward Said says what? There's a people, locked into a settler-colonial experiment, complicated because its one of precious Jewish brothers and sisters who'd jump out of the burning buildings of Jew-hating Europe, but they land on the backs of some Arabs and they act as if these Arabs don't exist, they act as if there's land but no people. But that's a lie. They land on the backs of these people and their humanity is rendered invisible. And we see it in the schools that are privatizing: a pushing out of public spiritedness, pushing out of arts programs. You see it in work place where profits are breaking records, but wages are stagnating. We can go on and on. You see it in universities, I've mentioned before, tied more and more to contracts and big money, and outcome analyses in terms of who can produce knowledge that pays.Now, Edward Said turns over in his grave when you talk about "knowledge that pays." How do you put a price on critical consciousness? How do you put a price on dignity? How do you put a price on integrity and honesty? They're priceless. And in that they said that our people sat down and they said "we eat from one dish," in this case, Ohio river valley. "We eat from one place. So nobody should take more than they need. Take care of the animals that are there because we eat from one dish." And then they said "let us eat with one spoon, because if we eat with one spoon then we're relatives." So, I feel like this moment in time is our moment to do that. To become good relatives, good ancestors. The people that make things beautiful. --At 18, Winona Laduke became the youngest person to speak to the United Nations about American Indian concerns. Graduated form Harvard in economics . She realized that the problems afflicting native nations were not endemic to the people but the result of centuries of governmental exploitation, abuse and poor policies. After graduation, LaDuke moved to the White Earth reservation. She started working as the high school’s principal while completing a long-distance MA in Community Economic Development.When, in 1989, a treaty lawsuit to recover lands promised in 1867 was dismissed, LaDuke founded White Earth Land Recovery Project, which focuses on the recovery, preservation and restoration of both land and traditional practices, with the aim to strengthen spiritual and cultural heritage of the Anishinaabeg people.In the late 1990s, LaDuke started farming on White Earth and other tribal land. In the last twenty years, part of her work has focused on campaigning against the introduction of genetically modified rice on native land, as well on the construction of several pipelines. So, I'm talking textiles. Let's just talk textiles for a minute. This is my hemp skirt. It's Chinese hemp because we don't make hemp in the United States. Most of us are wearing something that's made out of cotton. That would be 24% of the world's agricultural chemicals on 4% of the world's land and 5x as much water as hemp takes. Then what's the rest of the stuff that we're wearing? Unless you're wearing flax, basically we're all wearing fossil fuels. We're wearing polyesters and nylons and at some point we've got to ween ourselves and move the to post-petroleum era. Because we're going there anyway. They didn't end the stone age because they ran out of rocks. Change is inevitable. It's really just a question of who controls the change. So we want to be controlling that change. We want to be making decisions for our communities that are coherent. Because that's the way its going to work out for us. If you want somebody to fix this for you, whether its some technological genie or something else, it's not gonna happen. You've got to make sure: where's your people going to eat? Where's your water going to come from, where's your textiles going to come from, where's your energy going to come from? That's the thinking that we've got to do. So, I've been 4 years now a hemp grower. I have a state of Minnesota permit to grow industrial hemp, and basically I started it on textiles because Minnesota used to have 11 hemp mills. This age of enlightenment that the renaissance implies is going to be financed by divestment from fossil fuels, a transformation of how we spend our money and what we do with our supply chains. All of that is how this transformation is made. Because it is not that there is not enough money in the economy, it is just very poorly spent. But part of the next economy is that it's not all about money, either. The next economy is not about competition, it's about cooperation. But it is also the land where the wild things are. There is that here, too, but where I live you have frogs, you have butterflies, you have all kind of biodiversity. You have wild rice, you have bears, you have mountain lions, and geese and swans and sturgeon. We live where it is good still. They say on a worldwide scale that indigenous people are about 5% of the world's population, but where we live is about 75% of the world's biodiversity. So I really think it's time for us all to work together. If you want to protect the biodiversity of life, because that's where it comes from - life comes from that - we all need to work together. Our wild rice itself lay dormant in lakes because they were flooded by white people who need to have lake homes and big boats flood our lakes out, bury our rice under there. One lake - no rice for 50 years. another was 17 years and then one day the water levels fell and the rice came back. That tells you something abut the beauty and persistence of seeds and of life itself. So that's where I come from, that is also the place, whether it's the Amazon or the Arctic or Madagascar, those are indigenous peoples' territories. It belongs to us, the American people, and in a larger sense to the world. 2014 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Very few ideas in human history have changed the way we see and relate to the world. America's one original unique, world altering idea, and surely our grandest, was the concept of preservation of wilderness for its own sake. No society in human history had ever had this visionary inspiration. No one can say how this revolutionary idea originated; perhaps it was always implicit in the vast wild land called the New World, waiting for the genius to receive it. What we know is in the early 20th century, a few visionary people shared a dream. Their dream led eventually to an act of congress that for the first time anywhere on Earth, mandated protection of wilderness by law. Fifty years have passed since the Wilderness Act was signed and nearly all of those who devoted themselves to see it enacted are gone. One man remains who was in at the creation: Stewart Brandborg. He makes his home where he was born in the Bitteroot Valley of western Montana. The fate of wilderness may seem inconsequential. Not so. The reality we are schooled to forget is that we are inextricably part of wild nature. That truth is now glossed as folklore, as hypocrites mouth dead dogmas decoupled from the core demands of their faith. Advocates want the wild saved as a living laboratory; only visionaries say save it for its own sake. What is never said is that man cannot and will not be human without it. In commodifying all nature capitalism commodifies mankind. If humanity is simply one class of objects, it can be bought and sold with all the rest. Manipulated humanity has lost itself in the sorcery of the mechanical. If the last wild is eradicated, only artificial virtual nature will exist. Cut away from our roots and the nourishing Earth, we must inevitably wither into a virtual species. A fundamental mutation in kind that can never be undone. This end to our human story is threatening, appalling and likely, but it is not inevitable. With enough fierce outrage, love and wisdom, we can shatter the illusion of our impotence and resist, rebel and repeal this lethal system. If we are to survive as vital autonomous human beings, we must save our miracle, our only home. We must find the spirit and courage to reconnect with the fecundity of wild nature and defend our essence from destruction. The architects of this evil are despoiling the earth and driving the human species towards extinction. They are stripping us of our most basic civil liberties and freedoms. They are orchestrating the growing social inequality, concentrating wealth and power in the hands of a cabal of global oligarchs of fraud and theft. They are destroying our democratic institutions. The goal is to render people superfluous, pushed to the margins of society where they and their children are no longer considered to have value, value always determined by the amount of money produced and amassed.We may feel in the face of the ruthless corporate destruction of our nation, culture and ecosystem, powerless and weak, but we are not. We have a power that terrifies the ruling elites and all those we honor today are evidence of this power. DISHONORED TRUST - Marshall Islands Film For Justice 2020-11-27 | This program is set in the remote Marshall Islands, in the Pacific, which the United States took over as a United Nations ‘trust territory’ in 1945 with an obligation to ‘protect the population’s health and wellbeing’. From 1946 to 1958, the US exploded the equivalent of one Hiroshima bomb every day in the islands, contaminating its people and environment.Filming on irradiated Bikini Atoll, which cannot be safely inhabited today, perhaps ever, Pilger describes the testing in 1954 of the world's first hydrogen bomb, codenamed Bravo, which vaporised an entire island, leaving a dark chasm a mile wide in Bikini's beautiful lagoon. The inhabitants had been moved to a nearby atoll, Rongelap, where the ‘unexpected’ fallout endowed them with multiple cancers. Declassified documents describe a secret programme originally designed to test the effects of radiation on mice and used in the Marshall Islands on human beings. A US Atomic Energy official of the time describes the island of Rongelap as ‘by far the most contaminated place on Earth’.The human guinea pigs were regularly monitored and underwent scientific examination. Many suffered thyroid cancer, deformities appeared in babies and countless survivors of the original blast died from radiation poisoning. A claims tribunal was set up and quickly ran out of money.
