Long range FPV mountain surfing ... In the rain! (7km round trip) Mactac 2020-10-28 | Long range fpv drone flight in the beautiful, cinematic mountains of British Columbia on Vancouver Island. Shortly after I took off, it started raining. You can see a bit of it on the lens of the GoPro, but the FPV cam was just full of water. Definitely a hair raising experience, I'm just glad I had it really well conformal coated so it was at least a little bit waterproofed.It took 4 hours to get to the location, including about an hour on logging roads. Flight to Mordor: The aftermath of a 10,000 year old volcanic eruption. Mactac 2023-08-25 | About 10,000 years ago the side of this mountain in the British Columbia Rockies was blown off by a volcanic eruption and molten rock spewed out of the earth. That molten rock created these otherworldly spires that cover the peak of the mountain. Avalanche caught CLOSE-UP by FPV drone - Long range mountain surfing in 4k Mactac 2023-05-04 | We were out for a day of long range mountain surfing in British Columbia on Vancouver Island with our long range drones (that we build ourselves), hoping to get some nice cinematic footage. There was a "severe avalanche warning" a couple of days prior, but things seemed to have calmed down. Just when were were getting ready to leave, I looked up and saw a huge avalanche coming down the mountain right in front of us! I scrambled to get a battery on my long range FPV drone, fumbled with my GoPro, and booked it out towards the mountain as fast as I possibly could. I got there just in time to see an absolutely scary amount of snow from an avalanche hitting the bottom of the mountain. What looks like water in this video is actually a huge amount of snow, with some chuncks as big as my truck.Since I had the goggles on, I couldn't see what was goin on around me, and I was pretty paranoid about the avalanche coming down the mountain, through the valley and up the other side where we were sitting, all without me knowing. I was also worried that the road would get obliterated and we'd be stuck way out in the back country. Epic long range peak run, mountain surfing in the Canadian Rockies - 10km round trip Mactac 2022-09-25 | The Canadian Rockies are exceptionally beautiful and cinematic - they were formed 100 million years ago in a period of massive geological movement, volcanoes and earthquakes - and it shows! I spent 4 days in the mountains here flying my long range fpv drone up to mountain peaks, rock faces, glaciers and more. At this location, we could just see the peak through a small gap in the trees, so we pulled over and sent it out. Signals - FPV drone flying a gigantic Satellite dish Mactac 2022-05-26 | This is the 3rd largest satellite dish in Canada (check out the size of the cars beside it!), and used to be part of a worldwide communication network, and is now de-commissioned. The Valley of the Kings: FPV drone flight in the Iao Valley, Hawaii Mactac 2022-04-18 | The Iao valley on the island of Maui is a magical, cinematic place. Incredible peaks and ridges are covered in dense rainforest, with rainfall of almost 10 meters per year. I flew this with my 7 inch long range FPV drone with permission from the park rangers, even though someone came up behind me as I was cresting the top, and started arguing with me about being able to fly there. Luckily my family was there (watch until the end to see them!) to help deal with it while I had the goggles on. My daughter thought that the crest of the mountain looked like a humpback whale, so I added the whale sounds :)Something weird happened with my footage, and the edges came out a bit blurry. Long distance FPV flight out to an ocean freighter Mactac 2021-06-02 | I've always wanted to fly a cargo ship. Flying an FPV drone over ocean long distance is scary enough, but I was really nervous about failsafe issues due to the transmitters on the ship. I had a chance to fly one and decided to risk it from a nice cinematic flight. Whenever I approached the bridge, my video went bad, but otherwise it was good. The wind was pretty strong - you can see that on my way back from the ship how tilted the drone is to one side fighting the wind.The ship is the Cape Camellia sailing out of from Monrovia, a city in Liberia, currently anchored near Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It's 1/3rd of a kilometer long (!), and was empty with the hatches open. It can carry over 200,000 tons when full. FROST. (A sad fpv story of a frozen pond) Mactac 2021-01-25 | On the way back from a long 12 hour day trip to fly some mountains and get some cinematic mountain surfing shots, we stopped at this little frozen pond. It was absolutely stunning with the ice, snow and frost all over the trees. I fired up my cinematic 5 inch rig, put a GoPro Hero 8 on it & got some amazing shots - except when I was just turning around to come back to land, my DJI air unit (actually a caddx Vista) froze up - I lost video and then lost the quad somewhere in the forest. I could hear it, but couldn't see it. There was no way to get to the other side of the pond, and I didn't have a clue where it was anyways, so i just shrugged my shoulders - I mean, what are you going to do, right? Epic drone waterfall dive on a mountain in British Columbia Mactac 2020-11-04 | French falls is a 425 foot, amazingly cinematic waterfall on the edge of Nahmint Mountain on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It's the largest of a huge line of waterfalls that reach almost from the peak. This waterfall is the same huge one you see off to the right at the beginning of this video: youtube.com/watch?v=zObXysNtBmkAs beautiful as it is, it's a pretty major ordeal getting there as there are no trails. It took dozens of hours of surveying maps, pouring over drone footage (from flying the mountain peak!) and research to figure out how to get there. After a 4 hour drive, including an hour on logging roads, we first had to bushwack with a machete through some of the densest forest in Canada. Then, we had to cross a fairly large river with waist-high water (thanks to our chest waders), then climb a huge old riverbed with massive boulders. But was it ever worth it! I lost my GoPro Session :( Mactac 2020-08-12 | On the way home from doing some long distance peaks in some mountains, we decided to stop off for a little 5 inch rip. Unfortunately, I hit a branch or something which killed the power to my quad and ejected the GoPro Session. The video froze, and the quad crashed into the slash below, and the GoPro went flying. We ended up finding the quad, but never found the session. I used the "find my gopro" function in the app, and we did hear it beep a few times, then the battery died. We were SO close to finding it! Goodbye - my last flight Mactac 2020-02-17 | Goodbye to an awesome flying spot. We had permission to fly this golf course from the previous owner, it was fantastic - all sorts of fir trees and oak trees in different sections, and of course that great crashing grass you only get on golf courses. While we were here, someone came up to us and told us that we couldn't fly there anymore, as there was going to be a change in ownership. This was my last flight at this spot.So many great spots disappear all the time. Let's all take a moment to remember those amazing spots that we used to fly, that have succumbed to "progress". Upstream: Risk vs Reward Mactac 2020-02-11 | FPV drone flight up a beautiful stream towards a cinematic waterfall in British Columbia. Flying over water can be risky - It was tough to find a place that I had video the entire length of the clip, and video was pretty bad near the waterfall - Plus, something went haywire at the top when I tried to switch to the back camera to come down the river backwards - my controls didn't switch over properly and I landed about halfway up the waterfall, in a spot that looked impossible to reach. A classic drone crash/fail.Thankfully, my friend was feeling pretty brave and climbed up the side of the waterfall and managed to get the drone back. Winter in British Columbia: Up a snowy mountain Mactac 2020-01-31 | A flight up the side of a snowy mountain in British Columbia. The trees and snow were just beautiful that day. Into the Fog: Gigantic 230ft Douglas Fir Mactac 2019-12-18 | On a cold December day around sunset near Port Renfrew, BC, the fog was rolling in around "Big Lonely Doug" - the second tallest tree in Canada. It's about 1,000 years old (really!) and towers 230 feet high in the middle of a BC clearcut and has a circumference of 39 feet! Such a cinematic spot. For perspective, the small young trees underneath it are about 20 feet tall, and the really tall trees in the fog I fly through are about 80-100ft.It felt like an incredibly cinematic spot with all the fog. One problem was that it was so wet, my camera lens kept getting wet - I couldn't fly for more than a minute or 2 before I couldn't see. Absolutely Breathtaking: Lake at the top of a mountain in British Columbia - Long range FPV 5040 Mactac 2019-11-13 | Three hours of driving, and 2 hours of a grueling hike up a super steep mountain brought us to this magical location, deep in the mountains of British Columbia for some long range FPV mountain surfing. The clouds kept creeping in and out, only leaving us small windows to fly, but eventually it cleared up and we got some fantastic flights in. The whole scene was incredible - a beautiful lake, surrounded by alpine trees and mountain peaks in all directions. The building you see near the end of the video is for hikers and skiers to stay overnight.I can't get enough of flying the mountains in BC. I am so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. I'm definitely going back to this peak again soon. ... Lost in the Fog - Panic one mile up in the mountains Mactac 2019-11-12 | After a 2 hour hike up a mountain to do some long range mountain surfing, we stumbled upon an incredible lake right near the peak. The fog (actually clouds) was rolling in and out, giving us little 2 minute gaps to fly. When I went up on this flight, the fog came back quickly, and I was blinded.. I panicked, not knowing if I was 10 ft up or 100ft up, or if I was over the water or near a tree. I tried figuring out where I was to try and get back, but I had no idea what direction to go. I'm lucky I had a beeper, or I never would have found it. I used up all my luck on this flight I think!This was filmed at 5040 peak, at Cobalt lake in British Columbia. Ascent: Long distance peaks, waterfalls, lakes and sun - Triple Peak BC Mactac 2019-10-08 | A long Range FPV adventure. We found this almost 2km high peak sitting 2.5km away from our takeoff spot on an old logging road in the mountains of British Columbia. We were faced with some pretty challenging light conditions, with the sun shining directly at us most of the way up the mountain. It made it really tough to see, plus as you can see it affected the video output. In spite of this, it was a blast moutain surfing this spot! FPV Therapy - Blowing off steam Mactac 2019-10-01 | FPV is the best therapy - It helps a lot of people stay sane. After a long day of hours of driving to get to an awesome long range mountain spot (video coming soon!), the anxiety of being 2.5 km away on a mountain peak and not being able to see anything in the goggles because of the huge glare from the super bright sun, constant worries we would hit a tree that we didn't see, we stopped here at this sand pit on the 4 hour long drive home just to burn a few packs, relax and let off some steam. It worked perfectly. Perspective: A long range FPV journey up a mountain & into the mind Mactac 2019-09-11 | When flying the peaks of mountains, I get this feeling of elation and a perspective that is hard to describe. Long range FPV mountain surfing a 2.5km high peak Mactac 2019-08-21 | A long range mountain surfing drone video from a truly epic location in the British Columbia Rockies. As amazing as the location was, getting to it was just as epic. We entered into the valley, and drove on a crazy narrow mountain forest service road for about 8km. We found a small clearing in the forest, but there were no more roads or even trails to get closer to the mountain. We found a small dried up creek bed that seemed to go in the general direction of the mountain, so we started following that - it got bad pretty quickly over the course of an hour or so, and we had to crawl on our hands and knees, dragging our packs behind us on the rocks because the brush above the creek bed was so low. The whole time we were on the lookout for bears and cougars as they are plentiful in the area. We weren't sure if we were even going in the right direction, or if we'd have to turn back and go home.Finally, we found a meadow at the base on the mountain, and the view was incredible. We hiked up the meadow over the boulders for another 45min, crossing the stream many times and getting our feet soaked. I managed to slip and fall and sprain my wrist on the way back. The mountain had an elevation of over 2500m, and we flew from about 1.7km away from the peak. Epic Long Range FPV Mountain Surfing - 7km round trip Mactac 2019-07-31 | This is a one pack long range mountain surfing flight. I got up at 5AM to meet @TheCarNaGeisWorThiT to drive 4+ hours out into the wilderness to fly this stunning mountain and waterfalls. 1500+m elevation, and flying from a mountain next to it 2.6 km away from the peak (not including elevation!) made this a pretty challenging flight. Video dropping out and the sheer exhilaration of the flight had my hands shaking and my heart pounding by the time I landed. But it was OH so worth it - Long Range FPV is so incredibly fun! One mile high up in the mountains of British Columbia Mactac 2019-07-14 | Long range mountain surfing is SO addictive! We hiked up a 1560m mountain to within about 300m of the top and flew the peak. The wind was super strong up there and caused some weird shakes, plus the hike was grueling, but it was all worth it for the view, especially for the view of the other mountain and lake that you can see right over the peak. 150 foot canyon and Bridge loops (DVR) Mactac 2019-06-28 | The video might not show it well, but the canyon was HUGE and there were trees and branches all over the place. There was no way down to the canyon, so a crash equaled a lost quad. I was standing on the bridge, and I hate heights, so it was stressful enough as it was. My friend had to hold onto my shoulders because I was shaking and thought I was going to fall over! The Cross at the Top of the Mountain Mactac 2019-06-23 | We had an epic long range fpv day and hit a whole ton of amazing spots. This was a rip out to a cross on the top of a mountain and along a cinematic ridge line/rock face, about 4.5km round trip. I love getting the drone up into the mountains! Conditions were great, and video was perfect. We ended up giving a couple of people ride-alongs, which is always fun. This was on my 6 inch Armattan Rooster, with a 6s 1800mAh pack.
