Revival Birdcage BMW R18: Build Bio
updated
Well, we have good news. Today, we're gonna teach you the rough basics of operating the clutch, shifter, and throttle on a sweet Pontiac Fiero (edit: apparently, this is a Ferrari F40. We didn't notice, as the stick shift was too distracting with all of its tactile glory).
So sit back and enjoy a quick lesson. Pay close attention, and you soon will be capable of stealing any car you'd like—errrr drive—or whatever.

With 3 times the power of a factory VW engine, the Radial Motion 3 Liter, 3 Cylinder airplane engine pumps up the power AND the fun! We tackle all the speed humps, an empty gravel lot, 4 foot high grass behind the workshop and CANNOT quit smiling!
Redbull is cool to give you pep, but a Meyers Manx will change your day completely!

As the "Electric Revolution" starts to pick up speed in the two-wheel world, we've found ourselves as a shop beginning to embrace the potential for custom builds, design opportunities, and performance enhancement in the electric realm. That said, we're anything but strangers to building custom electric bikes, having completed a handful in the last few years.
Still, the Revival Grunt has been our most ambitious electric build to date.
After spending time with the Volcon team and developing a relationship after the 2022 Handbuilt Show, we were given a pre-production bike to customize, known as The Grunt. The Grunt is the mainstay of Volcon's line-up, and being asked to customize one from the ground up was a unique experience for various reasons that we don't usually deal with during a "conventional" build. Still, we saw that as an opportunity to embrace the relatively blank slate that is a custom electric motorcycle.
This one is a little different, but we know you'll appreciate how much work went into making this a true Revival Custom. Kick back, and enjoy Build Bio No. 018: The Revival Grunt.

Huge thanks to our BMW and BMW Motorrad friends for this beautiful boxer! "Technically," this isn't our first brush with a BMW R18, considering that we built the Birdcage with the prototype mule that would become the R18, but it is the first proper production R18 that we've owned.
After a few more rides and brainstorming, we'll customize this bike before it joins our rental fleet. Stay tuned for more as we begin work on customizing this beautiful platform.

Alan and Jonathan go for a quick drive through sunny California in ICON's newest FJ44 (#154). You'd think putting 154 of these bespoke bad boys into the world would be enough. Still, the demand isn't waning, nor is Jonathan's commitment to tradition, obsession with modern design, and unrelenting need to achieve performance excellence. We've done a lot of ICON-related videos recently, but we have to squeeze just one more in because the drive and the FJ44 were just too good not to share.

ICON's Thriftmaster builds exemplify timelessness, melding classic Americana and technology perfectly. The Thriftmaster from ICON is in a league of its own due to the immediately recognizable silhouettes and familiar but one-off branding details, taking hints from era-correct design ques topped off with an ICON touch. As always, ICON delivers beyond what's expected and takes the farm truck of the past well into the future.

The goal here is to "take timeless classic vehicles from any maker, from almost any era, then re-imagine them for modern use," and ICON does just that with every derelict build.
The Derelict builds are visually honest, chock full of features yet absurdly refined. The mechanical experience, specialized client preferences, and second-to-none performance of each example are only enhanced by the bespoke interiors laden with epic amounts of heritage and traces of Jonathan's design ethos in every vehicle.

Over the summer, we made the cross-country trip to LA with our custom Birdcage BMW R18. Our Destination? Jay Leno's Garage. After the Covid pandemic squandered our first attempt at visiting Jay, we finally made it back to California for the long-awaited feature only to DROP the bike minutes before showtime.
Things got a little hectic while we scrambled for a solution. We didn't realize our camera guy recorded the whole ordeal as it happened- until the footage was recently unearthed.
It seemed fitting that Alan (Founder) and Chris Davis' (Workshop Manager) first viewing of the footage should be our very first "Reaction" video. Sit back and enjoy Daily No. 124!

In Tech Talk #62, Revival's Lead Mechanic Alec walks us through the three stages of testing your battery's voltage as a benchmark for your battery's health and a starting point for diagnosing issues your bike may be having.
*Please note: The resting voltage for a lithium-ion battery should be between 12.8V - 13.4V, not what Alec stated in the video near timestamp 2:45.

Initially, we weren't sure if having a get-together on Thanksgiving weekend would be a good move or a fruitless effort. Still, our intuition told us to go with it, and sure enough, Revival faithful came out in droves to bask in the magic that a full parking lot here at the shop offers. Most of our Gearhead Sundays start pretty relaxedly. Familiar faces trickle in, begin to talk shop, and grab a taco. We give some tours, kick some tires, sip some coffee, oooh and ahh, and have a full-house before we know it. Last Sunday, however, we opened the garage doors and were greeted by a whole slew of motonerds, parked and waiting for us to kick things off. When you open the doors and see a wholly gutted '73 Gremlin AND a Pasha-clad '82 928 within feet of each other, you're in for a good time.
Walking around talking to everyone this month spurred a feeling of camaraderie that moved us, and we can only chalk it up to the electricity of the attendees. Everywhere we turned, there was an excited enthusiast of sorts, standing proudly next to their machine, looking at a friend's bike, and in one case offering rides in their Ural Gear-Up (Side-Car bikes are due for a comeback any day now). Needless to say, we had a blast.
Thanks to everyone that came out to November's gearhead; enjoy the gallery, and see all of you in December!
Alan and Chris take us on a brief tour of the "new" bay two, chat about our current direction, Alan's leaky 997 Targa 4S, and discuss the process of picking up the pieces when you're fixing another shop's (or 3 in this case) work. All while avoiding head injuries and hearing a police chase outside.

It's no secret that internal combustion is going the way of the wagon and fast. In the last few years, we've caught some serious glimpses of an "electrifying" reality, and it's getting closer by the minute. Motorcycles moving the way we expect them to via electricity has become a steadfast reality, but to be honest, we're excited about the future.
Being on the brink of anything is scary, especially when you're talking about replacing our beloved ICEs, but they aren't going anywhere out of our reach if we have a say in the matter.

Sometimes your bike won't start, and you're left wondering what's going on. Maybe you hear a click, or the bike is cranking to no avail; either way, you know somethings off, and the starter solenoid could be the culprit. Luckily there aren't many components to the starter circuit, so this is an easy start once you know the basics. Although this process isn't exactly the same for every bike out there, we've learned over the years that the most challenging part is usually finding the starter solenoid; after that, it's a straightforward process anyone can do!

At this point, you're probably asking how Renée came to own a quintessential English sports car without knowing it? Well, this 1959 M.G. Series MGA 1600 has quite a story behind it, and one that only Renée can adequately tell.
After a good ol' shirt-sweat through and an outfit change, Alan manages to squeeze into the car for a quick run down and clutch finessing refresher. Renée, the seasoned biker she is, picks it up no sweat and takes Alan for a ride around the block while she gets to know the car.

Over the years at Revival, so many factors have contributed to our success. Crucial support from loyal customers, the attendees who helped us grow The Handbuilt Show into the premier moto showcase in the world, and folks who donated essential items that elevated what we do at the shop. That generosity has helped us build a nice little stash of goodies, and now it's time for Revival to pay that kindness forward. To properly say "thank you," we are excited to announce our first Stash giveaway.
We're not kicking this off with a basic t-shirt bundle kind of freebie either. This inaugural giveaway is a fully functional 2001 BMW R1100R motorcycle AND a $500 Revival Cycles Gift Card for parts. However, we're not just giving it away by drawing names from a hat; you do have to "apply." It's easy, though, we promise. Simply shoot a quick cell phone video telling us how you will customize this essentially stock BMW. Submit it with your story, and then Revival fans will vote who gets the bike.
The deadline to submit is November 6th, 2021. Voting will end on November 20th, 2021, at 11:59 pm CST.
RULES:
-A video submission of how you will modify and re-design the bike needs to be submitted by November 6th, 2021, at 11:59 pm CST. Submissions will then close, and voting will open.
-Entrants can make video submissions through YouTube, Vimeo, or Instagram.
-Provide any additional notes or comments.
-Revival will screen initial submissions and approve the top ones.
-The public will then vote on their favorite submission, and that builder will win.
-Public voting will end on November 20th, 2021, at 11:59 pm CST.
-Entrants must be 18 years old or older.
-The BMW R1100R Motorcycle must be picked up/have shipment arranged by the winner. Revival will not provide shipping arrangements.
-The $500 Revival Cycles Gift Card for parts will be delivered to the winner via email.
*If the winner does not claim the motorcycle within 30 days of winning, the prize (motorcycle and gift card) will go to the next builder with the highest number of votes.
