In Sydney, Australia, we were right in the middle of a COVID lockdown, which peaked with government imposed curfews and a combined police, army presence enforcing it across my home region of Western Sydney.
I remember conversations with my label at the time, Elefant Traks. We were trying to decide if we should to wait out the pandemic before we released the album, not knowing if it’d be a couple of months or years.
I dunno about you but I don’t deal well when my decision making is bound by forces far greater than what you can interpret, let alone control. Plus, I’d finished the album roughly 12 months prior these conversations so I wasn’t trying to wait another for another 12.
So we released it to the world.
At a time when it felt like we needed good music to escape for a moment; to let our hearts and minds fly free from the physical confines of being locked down in our homes.
The heart of the album is the idea that there is no value in being great without purpose. And so the question then becomes, what is your purpose?
I wrote these songs as letters to my younger self. Having hit the age of 30 during the process of making this album, I was reflecting on what I wish I knew when I was 13/14 years old.
As a teenager, I struggled with identity issues. Born to a migrant family in the multicultural hotspot of Western Sydney but in a country that liked to (and still does) blame its problems on immigrants. I had no real sense of self, instead tried to fit in where I could, often compromising on my cultural roots because my culture wasn’t valued. I lost touch with my mother tongue language of Punjabi and found myself running away from the things that made me unique.
In my 20s, I found my way back. Like the Lupe Fiasco song, Hip Hop saved my life. It gave me the space and the confidence to find and embrace the things that made me who I am. It gave birth to the persona L-FRESH The LION.
Forever Rising Exceeding Sudden Hardships.
To be a Light for Peace.
"My parents named me Sukhdeep, it means to be a light for peace // born with a purpose, took a while for me to find my feet // A nervous child in the wild where they’re eyeing my defeat // but now they pay attention whenever they hear the LION speak //" - Lyrics from ‘Peace & Light’
Every name has a meaning. Sometimes we overlook it or take it for granted. While teenage me was running away from my roots, I definitely couldn’t see the answers I was searching for was actually within me. Given to me by my parents, courtesy of the Most High.
That’s the journey of the album, a young man trying to prove himself as great to the world, who then loses himself, only to find that he had everything he ever needed right there in his heart: his purpose. To be a Light for Peace.
The album is a rollercoaster ride when you dig deep beyond the surface. There’s layers in each song. And I’m sure what they mean to me will certainly be something different for you.
I hope that for the past 4 years since the album dropped, that it has brought you some comfort and confidence when times have been tough. I can’t thank you enough for riding on this ‘SOUTH WEST’ journey with me.

This music video was shot in the village of Bhagwanpur in Punjab during pre-COVID times. I want to acknowledge that the people of Punjab like those across India are experiencing a catastrophic wave of COVID. It’s having an impact on so many people including my own family & circles.
What I hope you will see in this video honours the spirit, passion, joy, courage, strength & resilience of the village or Bhagwanpur, just like the many villages across the region.
My heart goes out to everybody having to deal with this tragedy right now. Please keep safe.

About 'SOUTH WEST':
L-FRESH The LION’s third studio album SOUTH WEST is a love letter to the place that raised him, South West Sydney. Dedicating the album to his 13-year-old self, the record is a collection of lessons FRESH wished he had known as a kid; lessons on how to be confident in yourself and hold pride in your culture.
SOUTH WEST sees FRESH at his most honest, penning stories of his experience as a second-generation migrant kid existing between two cultures and the ongoing effects of Australia’s inherently racist culture. A personal take on the process of decolonisation, SOUTH WEST is both a listening and a political experience.

In this episode, L-FRESH speaks with reverence about the area that raised him, South West Sydney. Born in Liverpool and raised in the area his whole life, his new album pays respect to the experiences that made him.
He touches on the underdog mentality, being counted out or the lack of expectations for people from the area, and rising above those challenges in the music industry throughout his career, breaking through barriers to reach platforms like the United Nations.
South West Sydney is a community. It takes a community to bring a vision together. We get introduced to Zig Parker, executive producer for the SOUTH WEST album, producer Sergiio and artist Jessica Jade, who both made contributions to the album.

In this episode, L-FRESH speaks of his relationship with his mother tongue language: Punjabi. Fluent as a child, raised in a household where English was the second language, he succumbed to the pressure of wanting to fit in, a symptom of Australia's assimilation-colonial mindset, and lost touch with his language and his culture. Speaking in a very personal way, L-FRESH shares the pain of not being able to communicate with his grandmother in his mother tongue.
We also see behind-the-scenes footage of L-FRESH and team recording the song, Mother Tongue, at Studios 301 in Sydney, Australia.

BRIDGEMother (Official Lyric Video) - L-FRESH The LION feat. MOZA & MirrahL-FRESH The LION2020-02-24 | After three years spent taking his exhilarating brand of hip hop all over the world, South West Sydney MC L-FRESH The LION has turned his attention to the planet itself on his powerful new environmental treatise Mother.
Written three years ago - in conjunction with rising Sydney electronic duo MOZA and featuring frequent collaborator Mirrah on backing vocals - for a TEDx performance, the track's genuine empathy and concern for the fate of our planet's environment in the face of climate change sadly feels more relevant today than ever before.
A summer in which our proud country has been both ravaged by horrific bushfires and flooded by non-seasonal rainfall has exposed a serious leadership void as our society struggles to come to terms with this harsh new environmental reality.
While some have their heads buried in the sand, others are instead drawing a line in the sand and demanding accountability - that something be done to protect our future generations - and Mother is one such call to arms.
"Mother comes from a place of frustration and impatience," L-FRESH The LION explains. "It comes from seeing how we take this planet we live on for granted. Clean air, clean water - all of that. What we do collectively as a human race has consequences and our planet is the first to experience harm from our actions.
"I’ve been sitting on this song for a few years. And over that time, we’ve seen the conversations on climate change continue just as conversations, while the climate is changing - fires, floods, new norms being defined, Pacific nations having to deal with the impact.
"In Mother, I say I’m over the conversation. We need solutions. And we need actions. You wouldn’t be just talking if you saw your mother suffering in front of your eyes. You’d do something to help her out. Our planet gives us life. And it’s suffering."
MOZA are equally perturbed by these societal concerns, offering of the collaboration, “I think right now we as creatives with a voice have a responsibility to share the truth and urgency of our reality.
"An important part of what we talk about in Mother is accepting that at one point we were ignorant, then we learnt better. It’s okay to not know any better. But it’s never too late to learn.”
The socially-conscious Mother and its eye-catching video clip (created by Jordan East) are both to be released on Tuesday 25 February, the same day that L-FRESH The LION shares his concerns by addressing the Western Sydney Climate Action Rally at Parramatta Town Hall.
The last few years have found L-FRESH The LION spreading his wings and doing everything from sharing stages with Elton John, addressing the United Nations in New York, appearing before billions on MTV India, being an ambassador for YouTube Creator's For Change global initiative, having a clip premiere at the Tribeca TV Festival in NYC and even conjuring the time to pen the team song for the Sydney Kings basketball franchise.
But while his profile is rising around the planet, his heart still lies firmly in his beloved Western Sydney, which is why he's adopting the "think global, act local" mantra and agitating for serious change right in his own backyard.
We're not the owners of this planet, just its custodians - and L-FRESH The LION is adamant that we can't let such drastic damage happen on our watch and must take action before it's too late.
Whether your birth mother or mother nature, Mother makes clear the crucial importance of paying heed to that maternal instinct, to embrace the bigger picture and do the right thing rather than the easy thing. There is still time, but the clock is ticking...MTV Hustle Grand Finale Behind The Scenes (Part 2) - L-FRESH The LIONL-FRESH The LION2019-11-03 | Recap from L-FRESH The LION's performance at MTV Hustle's Grand Finale episode.
