I spent most of my time focusing on intertextuality/intermediality, but there wasn't time to talk about all the examples! There were other topics I was interested in talking about as well, so be sure to join us on Goodreads for further discussion!

I filmed 30+ minutes of me thinking aloud about this novel (I'm serious), and then I edited down for you here. Apologies if I come across nonsensical, in my head I was having a dance-off with Coyote. Either way, let's TALK! Have you read this book? Let me know your thoughts!

The introductory discussion of Rawi Hage's Carnival covers a wide range of topics. This novel is brimming with intriguing points of discussion, from the format to the plot twists. Jessica is covering themes of rebellion, allegory, and relationships.
Do you think of this book as "Canadian" in any way?
This is Part 2 in our September review of Fifth Business, by the mustachioed Robertson Davies. (What a beard!) This is actually the first installment of the Deptford Trilogy. I'm very interested in reading the rest!
In this, the first video discussing Fifth Business, Karate talks for not-very-long about mythology - as it relates to the book and our own lives, Fifth Business, and Canada's role in the world.
Apologies for lateness and seeming frazzled (AGAIN) - my camera decided to break the minute I decided to film this (fixed now).

Thanks for joining us!Jessica | The Year of Finding Memory, Judy Fong Bates | Part 3Hello Hemlock2013-08-20 | Warning: Unapologetic iPhone quality! Also, spoilers!
This is the third and final segment of our Year of Finding Memory discussion! I touch upon topics brought up by Jason and Karate, and relish in how vastly different our understanding and consumption of this book have been.
In this, the second video discussing The Year of Finding Memory, Karate talks for way too long about family, identity, coming to terms with the inaccessibility of the past, and the the role memory plays in crafting our own realities.
Please note: I did not hate the book, even if it seems that way. I simply had a different reading than others. I enjoyed learning about her parents and their lives, as well as her dual role as a child - serving as interpreter and representative, while still being a typical Canadian kid.

If you are wary of this, READ THE BOOK and then come back!
In this, the first discussion video of The Year of Finding Memory by Judy Fong Bates, I talk a little about the unreliability of memory, immigration and the challenges her family faced, and Canadianness.
This is the third and final installment in our discussion about The Sisters Brothers. In this video, Karate addresses Jessica's major questions, one of Jason's questions, and provides some beaver factoids.

The second of three discussion videos, in which Jason discusses "Canadianness", mentions some conventions of the Western, and quarrels with the supernatural.
In the first of three installments on The Sisters Brothers, Jessica discusses characterization, admirable prose, and poses her major lingering question.
