A young man in the audience lifted a sign saying that he knew how to play "Love Of My Life" on the piano. This kind of thing is not unusual, but since it was the first show, I was feeling extra spunky and thought it would be fun to see what happens. So here is Leo accompanying me, completely unrehearsed and impromptu, on what I consider to be one of the more poignant moments of the show. I can't imagine the amount of courage it must've taken for him to get up there with me, but I'd say he did an amazing job. Way to go, Leo!

The king of power ballads, Phil Collins’ first solo #1 still gets me today - every time I hear it. This song taught me about cluster chords, and how to play on the black keys. I found the sheet music for “Against All Odds” somewhere in my early teens, and took on the challenge of learning it, even though I’m a very slow sight reader, with all it’s susses, and add nines, and whatnots. I debated overdubbing the two beautiful vocal harmony lines in verse 3, but decided to just keep it a solo vocal performance, much like the way he did it at Live Aid. Marc Martel - MY WAY (Frank Sinatra Cover) Marc Martel 2025-06-18 | One of the great songs of the 20th Century, "My Way" represents for me the perfect convergence of lyric and melody. Die-hard Sinatra fans take for granted that Paul Anka custom wrote the lyrics for Frank, and lifted the music whole-sale from "Comme d'habitude," released by French pop star Claude François. But the idea of taking an existing song and completely re- writing not only the lyrics, but their entire meaning, is in itself an incredible feat. You have to develop completely new ideas, unrelated to the original composer's and make them fit inside the meter. Anka did this so well, that I would even argue his lyrics fit the meter better than theFrench lyrics. Never mind that song becoming the greatest crooner of all-time's calling card. Like any songwriter, I've often been asked if melody or lyrics come first. It's always easiest when they come together, of course. But I've always been more of a melody guy myself. And the melody of "My Way" has such conversational momentum in its structure, urged on by the constantly descending and resetting chord progression, it makes you want to know where you're going next as one line feeds into the next. There's no fat to cut, no opportunity for boredom. It's easy to see why Anka believed the English-speaking world needed its own version. That, paired with a lyric Sinatra himself famously, ironically, didn't care much for - perhaps they struck a little too close for comfort, maybe he felt misunderstood - it's no wonder this song blew up. Hearing someone unapologetically tell their story, warts and all, in a way that makes us all secretly wish it could be our own eulogy is a pretty beautiful thing. And allinside 4 minutes. Marc Martel - Its The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (Official Music Video) Marc Martel 2022-12-18 | In December 2020, my wife had the brilliant idea to gather up a few of our close friends and go caroling — something I hadn’t done for about as long as I could remember. By the end of that year, it was painfully obvious that many were growing quite weary of constant social distancing, so we agreed caroling would be a great way to spread some much needed cheer. I wish I could say that this video was shot in 2020, but lo and behold, we somehow lost the footage. Oh well. There’s always next year. And so there was a “next year.” We went out again in 2021, making many backups of the footage this time to make sure we could make this video. It ended up being one of those blessings in disguise, because “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” (which I recorded this year) might be the most perfectest song to commemorate our second extra-chilly, festive evening, strolling about Franklin, Tennessee, with our instruments and singing our hearts out to literally everyone we met. And some were even ready for us this time, and prepared delicious snacks for us. Bonus!Truly, one of the most beloved sentimental Christmas songs, made popular by Andy Williams on his iconic first Christmas album released in 1963, “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” all but defines the Christmas Spirit. I’ve always loved this song — of course — but it was on tour with Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant on their 2019 Christmas Tour that I decided that I would soon record it myself. Both Amy and Michael have recorded incredible versions of Williams’ classic, and here I am, throwing my hat in the ring of varieties of takes on this little ditty. Marc Martel - Youre a Mean One, Mr. Grinch (Official Music Video) Marc Martel 2022-12-02 | How The Grinch Stole Christmas is probably my all-time favorite animated Christmas story. All you Charlie Brown lovers out there can debate me over it, but that’s me, and I’m sticking to it. (Although, who doesn’t love the Charlie Brown Christmas special(s), amiright?) I get a kick out of seeing how creative some people get in incorporating The Grinch into their Christmas decorations. Someone in my neighborhood has a wood cutout of Grinch on his front lawn, and the vintage multi-colored string lights adorning his gutters come down off the roof into The Grinch’s hands, making it appear as though that sneaky little rotter’s hard at work trying to ruin Christmas for everyone again. It made me smile on my walk the other day. In a rare turn of events, I went a little bit against my usual rule of “if it Ian’t broke, don’t fix it” with Dr. Seuss’ most lovable villain’s theme song, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." I’ve always thought the tune begged for a high rock voice version, simply for the sake of contrary-ness. And the decision was kinda made for me, as my vocal cords obviously have no way of doing justice to the deep bass of the iconic original, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. So I went into this recording feeling extra free to experiment with producer Greg Collins, and the fantastic players he assembled for it. You deep-cut Queen fans out there might be thinking to yourself “I wonder if he was taking a lead from Freddie Mercury’s performance on ‘Death On Two Legs.’” Well, you would not be wrong. Marc Martel - Labor Of Love (Official Music Video) Marc Martel 2022-11-18 | Andrew Petersen is easily one of the best classic songwriters I know here in Nashville. He’s already had a storied career as a singer-songwriter, recording about a dozen albums over the last 2 1/2 decades, and is the acclaimed author of the children’s book series “The Wingfeather Saga.” He’s your basic renaissance man, is always down for conversation over some English tobacco, and he’s a friend of mine, to boot. Perhaps the thing Andrew is most well known for to his loyal fans, is his annual Behold The Lamb Of God Christmas tour, based on his 2004 release of the same name, on which he takes a small army of his musician friends on the road to perform the album in its entirety. The concert is an eclectic gathering of world-class ‘musos,’ filled with stories of faith, humor, pain, and redemption, told by Andrew and is cohorts. I’ve had the great honor of sharing the stage with Andrew & Co. for “Behold,” at the Ryman Auditorium here in Nashville, twice. One of the two more cathartic moments of the show is “Labor Of Love,” usually sung by singer-songwriter Jill Phillips, who also sang on the album version. This heart-wrenching song about Jesus’ birth, depicting the bittersweet reality of what every parent endures during the birth of a child, in general — but also Mary and Joseph’s unique story, in particular — always stood out to me as well. I always include at least one song on my Christmas albums that leans heavily into the faith I profess as a follower of Jesus, and for The Christmas Collection, Vol. 2, “Labor Of Love” was the perfect fit, for its unique concept, its underlying discomfort, and quiet beauty. Aside from all the touring, a big part of 2022 was creating 5 new songs for The Christmas Collection, Vol. 2, along with everything else that comes with releasing a new album. Not the least of which, is the music video for our lead radio single.“What Christmas Means To Me” is the first Stevie Wonder song I’ve ever recorded, and it was both a delight and a beast to sing. All the while, I had to remind myself that Stevie was only SEVENTEEN years old when he recorded this song. What were YOU doing when you were seventeen? Humbling, to say the least! Once the recording process was done, with producer Greg Collins at the helm, it was on to the accompanying visuals, which is where my super talented wife Crystal took over. Crystal teamed up again with videographer Jeremy Ryan (who also directed the “Miserere” video) to create what is, IMO, the perfect video for this incredibly catchy, fun tune by one of the world’s most accomplished artists. I mean, check out that green suit, the vintage red backdrop, the swooping jib shots — all styled and masterminded by Crystal and Jeremy. Not to mention the long-game color coordination between both of my Christmas Collections — Volume 1 being red, and Volume 2 being green. Does it get any Christmassier?! ONE VISION OF QUEEN - Announcement and Update Marc Martel 2022-09-13 | MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT!Hello, friends and fellow Queen fans!It's mind boggling to think I've just celebrated a decade performing the music of Queen, around the globe, with incredible musicians in both the rock and symphonic world. The places I've been, the faces I've seen... and the songs we've sung! Thank you all so much for showing up to hundreds of concerts, enjoying and sharing my videos, and buying my music, whether Queen, Christmas, or otherwise!I have been looking forward to announcing something exciting, and something you'll start noticing soon. As you know, I've performed tributes to Queen's music under a variety of names, and I'm so grateful for the way you've followed me and the music over the years; ultimately, my team and I know that this can be confusing to you and the marketplace - and we are going to remedy some of that!In 2020, on a 20-date tour of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, we performed for the first time under the banner "ONE VISION OF QUEEN," and we immediately fell in love with the name, and added the song "One Vision" to our set, which has now become one of our staples from night to night. I love this name because it truly best describes who we are and what we do as a band, striving to be the most note-for-note-authentic, and exciting tribute in the world. As I've said from the very beginning, for us, it's all about the music. Anyone who has seen my shows knows it's a different kind of tribute, in which I weave my own personal story with Queen and their music through the evening, without imitation, always approaching the original material with reverence, as well as the enormous sense of freedom Queen themselves are known for in their live performances.Though we are changing names, from The Ultimate Queen Celebration to ONE VISION OF QUEEN, the core band itself remains the same. Brandon, Tristan, Mike and Oskar - who I consider some of the finest musicians in the world - are looking forward to joining me in all the upcoming shows and reaching even more audiences worldwide. Together, we will be visiting new cities, new countries, working new songs into the set list, and will even be releasing a live album coming this Fall - stay tuned for all the above!In 2023 we have multiple international tours already in the works, to be announced soon, and we are focussed on bringing ONE VISION OF QUEEN, and the music of Queen, to new venues and markets across North America, as well as internationally. Marc Martel - Seaside Rendezvous (Queen Cover) Marc Martel 2022-08-05 | When we first played near the Mediterranean sea a few years back, my manager, Josh, thought it would be cool to do a sneaky little “impromptu” version of “Seaside Rendezvous” on the beach, as the song references the Mediterranean. I think he had seen me playing ukulele on “Good Company” and realized that “Seaside Rendezvous” could also work as a ukulele song. Turns out he was right. Huge props to Tristan for working up a perfect adaptation of the notoriously intricate arrangement of this song off Queen’s A Night At The Opera, for what is essentially a child’s toy! I doubt he could have possibly found a tinier uke. I’ll also have you know, Brandon went out and spent his hard-earned dough on a kazoo and… uh… whatever that whizzy thing at the end of the instrumental section is, just so you could be satisfactorily entertained. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?! “Seaside Rendezvous” is one of those songs that just makes me shake my head like, “How in the world did Freddie write that?!” Truly, a musical genius. Marc Martel - Bad (U2 Cover) Marc Martel 2022-04-29 | I was quite late to the U2 game, as seems to be the trend in my history with the world’s greatest rock bands. It was the late nineties before I dove headlong into The Joshua Tree, the album by which I measure every other U2 album. Soon after that, they released All That You Can’t Leave Behind, forever sealing the deal for me as a U2 fanboy. Right around that time, my friend Jason Germain and I were forming a band of our own in Caronport, Saskatchewan, to take a bunch of songs we’d written and recorded, on the road. We really wanted to be a five-piece, so that someone could be the electric guitar expert, as neither Jason or I were great at it. Before we thought better of the idea, ultimately agreeing four members was plenty, I vividly remember auditioning one steely-eyed guitarist from our college, and being completely enamored with his ability to reproduce The Edge’s angelic sounds with his array of effects pedals. We were setting up for rehearsal when he started playing the riff from “Bad,” and I thought, “Wow, that’s amazing! This is our guy!” Turns out, he had other plans for his life than riding a fifteen-passenger into the perilous unknown with four other barely-adults. Either way, this one goes out to Ben Davidson, wherever you are. Hope you’re doing well, man.
Marc Martel - Thank You For Saving Me (Delirious? Cover) featuring Stu G Marc Martel 2022-04-17 | Having grown up in Quebec, and attending francophone churches, I wasn’t exposed to quite the same music my English speaking brethren had around them. The vast majority of our hymns and choruses were translated from English. So when I headed west to bible college in 1996, I fell into a vast treasure trove of new-to-me church music, rediscovering familiar melodies, only in their original—much more poetic—language. That’s where I found and nurtured my love for leading worship, which I had the privilege of doing every month or so for the student body, in morning chapel. Around the same time, a band out of England was making waves with their super catchy melodies, and approachable heartfelt lyrics. Everywhere I turned, a new Delirious? song was everyone’s favorite new praise & worship tune. Whether it was “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever,” “Shout To The North,” “Did You Feel The Mountains Tremble?” or “Happy Song,” people couldn’t get enough of the music of lead singer and principle songwriter, Martin Smith, and his band. It has been nearly 25 years since I was first introduced to Delirious?’s stuff, at a very formative time in my life, and I’m so thankful today to call their lead guitarist, Stu G, my friend. In celebration of Easter 2022, here’s our one-take performance of my favorite Delirious? song, “Thank You For Saving Me.”

I so enjoyed digging into the vocal on this one, paying a little more attention to Freddie Mercury's studio version than I normally do, as the purpose of this video was not only to entertain, but also doubles as a bit of a tutorial on how the song was reproduced. You get into a groove where you rarely need more than a 15-minute sound check. With all that extra free time on the road, it’s a great opportunity to use that beautiful stage to work up some new material for future shows. That’s exactly what we did on our tour of Germany in early 2020. Bit by bit, we would chip away at figuring out which two songs we wanted to put together into an exciting medley. Two songs that we loved, but didn’t feel the need to play in their entirety. By the end of the One Vision Of Queen tour, we were ready to slip a brand new medley into our set. (Little did we know we’d have to wait almost a year before we got to perform it!) Both well-known Queen tunes, to be sure, but never played together like this before. So this medley is our own unique twist on a couple classics.“Seven Seas Of Rhye” was Queen’s first single from their debut album, and I consider “Bicycle Race” to be on the level of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in regards to sheer creativity, packed into a tighter package. I also like that the former is a bit of a deep track (especially to the average North American fan), and then we hit you with one of Queen’s most infectious ear worms to balance it out. Having performed this medley already quite a few times, I now know to make sure to watch people’s faces as they light up upon the first instance of “BICYCLE! BICYCLE! BICYCLE!” But I can always tell the hardcore Queen fans by the ones cheering at the first notes of the iconic arpeggiating intro of “Seven Seas.” This is our fresh, new one-two punch!
