A FAMILY EMERGENCY | VAN LIFE POSTPONED Kits World 2022-07-04 | A Call in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT made me CANCEL MY PLANS and head off to LONDON to visit my Mum in hospital. She has dementia, and had suffered a fall. She was very happy to see me, but I found the visit quite upsetting.Before reaching the hospital, I had to negotiate LONDON RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, and was unable to get into my family home when I arrived, so I went on a brief trip down memory lane, visiting some old haunts in STREATHAM, SOUTHWEST LONDON. These included my Grandma's house at STREATHAM COMMON, and the ROOKERY GARDENS, where I used to play as a child.Then I navigated the confusing streets of TOOTING in search of ST. BOLSOVER CASTLE | Van Life UK Kits World 2022-05-22 | I spent a happy afternoon exploring BOLSOVER CASTLE in Chesterfield, DERBYSHIRE.This was filmed the same day I visited Straws Bridge Nature Reserve and the Crich Tramway Museum (seen in last week's episode), so I was quite knackered!Having missed the chance to climb to the battlements on my last visit here, I set myself the task of seeing them this time round, but then I accidentally found myself exploring the inside rooms too - which had been closed the last time I was here.All in all, I had a really good trip, and that's why I felt this visit warranted a separate episode. CRICH TRAMWAY MUSEUM and Straws Bridge | VANLIFE UK Kits World 2022-05-15 | This is an interesting one. I rose before dawn and took a walk along the misty river, outside the TRENT LOCK PUB. Then I drove to STRAWS BRIDGE, where there is an idyllic park-up next to a MISTY LAKE, with swans, ducks, and geese. After that I drove to CRICH TRAMWAY MUSEUM which is far more than just a museum. It's a whole VINTAGE VILLAGE, beautifully recreating a bygone age with plenty of attention to detail. And of course there are lots of TRAMS. I rode two trams while I was there, and visited the museum too, and I have to say it was far more interesting than it sounds! NEWSTEAD ABBEY & Attenborough Reserve | VANLIFE UK Kits World 2022-05-08 | I tried my luck at an amusingly named Victorian waterworks - the PAPPLEWICK PUMPING STATION, but arrived on a day when it was closed. I managed to get a few shots before being sent on my way by a man wielding a wheelbarrow!Next, I stopped off at the beautiful NEWSTEAD ABBEY, ancestral home of LORD BYRON, the famous poet. Here I discovered the tomb of Byron's famous dog, BOATSWAIN, who has a bigger monument than his master.Then I drove to the ATTENBOROUGH NATURE RESERVE, where I got NAKED and did a spot of BIRDWATCHING. I spent a while in the HOUSEMARTIN HIDE, before heading on to a SKETCHY-looking car park somewhere in LONG EATON.Will I survive the night? Beginning on the ISLE OF THANET, known by the locals as "PLANET THANET".In the FIERY FINALE to my weeklong THANET odyssey, I return to R.A.F. MANSTON, also known as MANSTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, where 25 years ago I was given UNPRECIDENTED access to film the AVIATION FIREFIGHTERS in TRAINING at the DEFENCE FIRE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE. Myself and two colleagues were given UNRESTRICTED ACCESS to film all areas of the fire ground, and we spent two weeks following the trainees, day and night.The footage I use here is all from my PRIVATE PERSONAL ARCHIVE, consisting of material I filmed on my cheap camcorder, so I apologise for the poor quality of the shots. However, they still show the SPECTACULAR and DRAMATIC nature of the AVIATION AIRCRAFT FIRES which were ignited and extinguished multiple times daily.Sadly, according to research I carried out since completing this episode, the FIRE SCHOOL is now permanently closed.However, when I visited the site for this episode, there was still an active presence of some sort on the base, as I was swiftly SEEN-OFF BY SECURITY!My next stop was the DOG AND DUCK at PLUCKS GUTTER, an amusingly named place that provided an UNEXPECTED and MOVING DISCOVERY.I then visited the WILDWOOD TRUST at WEALDEN FOREST PARK, CANTERBURY. This is essentially a ZOO where foreign and indigenous WILD ANIMALS are exhibited. I didn't like the small size of the cages, but apparently the trust conducts important CONSERVATION and RE-INTRODUCTION work, returning endangered species back into their natural habitat, so that is commendable and worthy of support, even though I still think the enclosures are too small!My final stop in this journey was at RECULVER TOWERS, a 12th CENTURY MEDIEVAL CHURCH occupying the same site as the RUINS of a more ANCIENT ROMAN FORT.Thank you for watching. MENTAL HEALTH AND VANLIFE - Brierley Country Park and Covid Booster Kits World 2021-12-19 | I discovered a NEW PARK-UP this week, at BRIERLEY COUNTRY PARK, also known as BRIERLEY FOREST PARK, hidden away in a maze of unassuming housing estates. I BOUGHT A CAMPER VAN | Van Life UK | Solo Wild Camping Kits World 2021-09-16 | Well, I did it. I BOUGHT A CAMPER VAN. Specifically, a Trigano Tribute 550 - built onto the chassis of a FIAT DUCATO. It's a bit old - 2008 - but very distinguished, like me, and it has a living room, large double bed, kitchen, bathroom with shower, and all the mod-cons (if you exclude most of them).I plan to explore the UK and Europe over the coming years, WILD CAMPING where possible, living off the land, visiting VAN MEETS and FESTIVALS, partying with other VAN LIFERS, and generally exploring the world while there's still a world to explore.MY BOOKTUBE ACTIVITIES WILL CONTINUE.I still love reading. I'll be reading on the road, and making reviews (occasionally) and TAG VIDEOS as before.
