The Top Five Spots of Southern Death Valley - caves, ruins, mountains and more! The Last Adventurer 2023-07-11 | While there is not a "bad" spot in Death Valley National Park (other than Badwater), the southern section of the park and its surrounding areas does not receive as much attention as some of the more mainstream areas. However, for the intrepid explorer - and the novice visitor, this is an area full of possibilities, and a great gateway zone for adventures. Starting slightly outside the park boundaries in Shoshone, California, the below are five amazing spots in southern Death Valley:1) Dublin Gulch Cave Homes. Carved out of volcanic ash in the 1870's on, these unique structures are readily accessible off of CA-127 with a short walk. While well-preserved, these cave homes were occupied until the late 1960's and early 1970's, and allow one to feel like they have stepped back into the mining and prospecting days of the region. These historic sites were also occupied by some of Death Valley's famous miners, the Ashford Brothers and Shorty Harris.2) The Circle Cave. From Shoshone, to enter Death Valley, one follows CA-127 North until it reaches CA-178 west. Along this route, one will experience wild, desolate views of the desert, and complete solitude. Twenty miles out of Shoshone is a rock outcropping with a unique cave with great views of the region.3) Ashford Mill. While Death Valley had many claims, the Ashford Mill is the only accessible surviving set of gold mining ruins at the southern portion of the park. While only the foundation of the mill remains, the ruins of an outbuilding serve to demonstrate the harsh and difficult conditions miners faced. This location is eight miles to the west of the cave off of CA-178.4) Badwater. Whereas the first three stops are more obscure, Badwater is well known as the lowest point in North America at -282 feet. While there are many ways to explore it, the best is to walk out onto the hardpan to experience the vast emptiness of Death Valley.5) Dante's View. While there are many high points in Death Valley, there is only one that overlooks Badwater, the 5,575 foot Dante's View in the Black Mountains. To this end, Charles Brown said it best about the scenery there, with this quote “I don’t pay much attention to scenery, but I know one view that made me stop and look.” (Dante's View).These are my favorite five spots in Southern Death Valley - what are yours? Mosaic Canyon - unique geology and an amazing slot canyon in Death Valley! The Last Adventurer 2022-08-26 | While Death Valley has many slot canyons, one of the most popular, if not the most popular is Mosaic Canyon. In addition to being a great introduction to the park's slot canyons, Mosaic Canyon is a great introduction to off-roading on approved roads in the park, as the route to the trailhead is generally well-maintained and graded. From the trailhead, Mosaic Canyon delivers with great views of the Panamint Range, the Death Valley floor, and unique and interesting geologic features such as Mosaic Canyon Breccia and Noonday Dolomite Marble. For the intrepid hiker, the roundtrip route on this hike is four miles roundtrip with some scrambling; but for the casual hiker, a great experience can be had within the first half mile. Twenty Mule Team Canyon: A scenic drive through Death Valley and Star Wars history! The Last Adventurer 2022-03-13 | While Death Valley has lots of legal off-roading opportunities, not all of them are suitable for every driver. Fortunately, one of the best routes in the park is off-road novice friendly; and has enormous payoffs in terms of views, while maintaining a short distance with plenty of spots to explore. Twenty Mule Team Canyon is a 2.5 mile one-way graded dirt road that traverses the badlands through the Black Mountains. The route is also a reference to the park's mining history, and the teams of 18 mules and 2 horses that would long-haul borax from Death Valley to Mojave over ten days. More important to movie fans, Twenty Mule Team Canyon is also the spot where many scenes from "Return of the Jedi" were filmed, and is generally less popular than nearby Zabriskie Point, which was featured in the "Mandalorian". For those that want to explore further, Golden Canyon (also seen in Star Wars) is nearby for additional hiking. Eureka Mine & Aguereberry Point: historic ruins and great views in Death Valley! The Last Adventurer 2022-03-08 | While Death Valley has many ghost towns, and many great views, the best area that combines all of the above is the Harrisburg ghost town, the ruins of the Eureka Mine and Cashier Mill, and Aguereberry Point. Located in the Panamint Mountains, one needs to do some light off-roading, and light hiking to get to these destinations. After a short two mile drive, one can see the ruins of Harrisburg (founded 1945); and with a little hiking, can explore Pete Aguereberry's house, the Eureka Mine, and the ruins of the Cashier Mill. Of note, Pete Aguereberry took over $175,000.00 in gold from the mine over a forty year period - mostly on his own! For those willing to adventure further, the dirt road winds up to Aguereberry Point, which has expansive views of the valley below from 6,400 feet elevation. As with any Death Valley adventure, parties attempting this should have the proper equipment, and timing - but for those that do, this is a great one-day adventure. Skidoo - historic Death Valley mining ruins in the picturesque Panamint Mountains! The Last Adventurer 2022-01-20 | While Death Valley has many ghost towns, none was more successful from 1907 to 1917 than Skidoo. Over that ten year period, over 1.5 million dollars in gold was extracted from the region before the boom ended, and the town went bust - and was abandoned. Today, over a hundred years later, the Skidoo mining region has many abandoned buildings, including an impressive ruin of a 15 Stamp Mill that was fed by a gravity water system. Like many of Death Valley's other ghost town's, much of the adventure of Skidoo is in getting there, and exploring it. If you're headed to Skidoo today; be prepared to off-road over nine miles; and be prepared for remote conditions. As a last fun fact, Skidoo became a phrase - to "skidoo" meant to get lost - a meaning that survives the town today. Petrified Forest National Park - seven unique locations in the Painted Desert! The Last Adventurer 2021-05-24 | Located fifty miles west of the New Mexico border, Petrified Forest National Park is a must-visit national park in Arizona, and one of the most unexplored parks in the National Park system. Chock full of scenic views of the painted desert, Petrified Forest National Park also covers portions of modern history, preserving some of America's Route 66 history, and pre-modern history, with petroglyphs at Puerco Pueblo and Newspaper rock. If all of this wasn't inspiring enough to visit, the park also contains large fossil deposits from the Triassic period, such as the petrified forest, where the park gets its name. While petrified wood can now be broken down into hand sized chunks, visitors are advised to keep the rocks where they lie because of the "curse" that exists in taking them; even if you don't believe in curses, one should exercise LNT principles. From top to bottom, the park is a great spot to visit, and here are my top seven recommendations. Blythe Intaglios - amazing giant desert geoglyphs! The Last Adventurer 2021-03-26 | Near the Arizona-California border are some of the most unique native american sites in North America. These formations were carved into the Colorado Desert hardpan at a point over five hundred years ago, and maybe over fifteen hundred years ago. With a series of distinct locations, these geoglyphs are amazing carvings that in one case, is over one hundred and seventy feet long. While the exact reasons for these geoglyphs are not fully known, they are spectacular depictions of men, perhaps gods, and animals or creatures; and are amazing surviving works of Native American culture and art. Proctor Valley Road - monsters, myths, and legends in San Diego! The Last Adventurer 2021-03-17 | While there are many legends in San Diego county, since 1960, none is more popular than the legend of the Proctor Valley Monster. While unquantifiable, the monster is rumored to have menaced cars, scared cattle, and other monsterly things. In addition to the monster, Proctor Valley is rumored to be the site of a ghost or demon car, angry spirits, or the infamous "Blue People". While Proctor Valley may or may not have these things, it does have a dirt road that connects Jamul to Eastlake, and it does have some ruins, some hiking trails, some vernal pools, and some biking routes. If you are looking for a backcountry adventure just outside of San Diego, this is a great scenic spot, especially in the spring. Red Cloud Mine - off road exploring in the Chuckwalla Mountains! The Last Adventurer 2021-02-19 | Throughout its entire expanse, the Mojave Desert is honeycombed with the ruins of twentieth century mining endeavors. Some of the more well-preserved ruins, that of the Red Cloud Mine are located near the Chiriaco Summit on Interstate 10. This adventure is mostly an off-road route that heads seven miles south of the highway into the Chuckwalla Mountains, for which 4WD is required. However, from the four mile mark, there are various intact structures, wrecked vehicles, other mining detritus, and of course mines to explore on foot. Trona Pinnacles - ancient rocks in the Searles Valley! The Last Adventurer 2021-02-08 | One of the most distinctive desert landscapes in the United States are the Trona Pinnacles. With a number of unique shapes ranging from "tombstones" to "ridges" and "cones", these calcium carbonate formations reach for the sky from the desert floor. What the pinnacles are, exactly, are "tufas" - structures that were formed thousands of years ago during the Pleistocene era when the area was under six hundred feet of water. Whether one wants to camp, off-road, or hike, the pinnacles today provide a mecca for adventurers in a remote area of California. If one wants to visit, one needs to be prepared for remote, and for much of the year, hot conditions as the ancient lakes have long since evaporated, and only the salt pan of the Searles Valley remains. Indio Hills Badlands - an amazing desert hike through slot canyons and windcaves! The Last Adventurer 2021-02-04 | One of the best hikes in the Coachella Valley is the newly opened Indio Hills Badlands Trail. While the trail itself was opened in 2020, it was a combination of three pre-existing trails that locals and visitors alike had been hiking for years. At 5.2 miles roundtrip, the trail leaves directly from Indio, and heads across the desert before entering into the San Andreas fault sculpted Indio hills and badlands. With wind caves, slot canyons, and other features carved from the sedimentary rocks, this hike features something for every hiker to see, and is a great introduction to exploring either nearby Joshua Tree, or more remote hikes in the Mojave. Ghost Mountain - a short hike with great views to modern desert ruins! The Last Adventurer 2021-01-22 | While the Anza Borrego desert is full of supernatural legends, it is also full of legendary history from prospectors, explorers, and in the case of Marshal South, writers. In 1931, Marshal South decided to embark on an experiment - living on Ghost Mountain with his wife and kids. This experiment ended up lasting sixteen years, and with the South family constructing a home - Yaquitepec (the House of the Sun). While the South family is long gone, the ruins of the structure remain, along the Marshal South Trail - the route they took to haul supplies. This easy two mile roundtrip hike is a great introductory experience to the oddities of the desert. For those that want to explore more, there are two nearby short trails - the Morteros Trail - and the Pictograph Trail (also in Blair Valley) that lead to ancient cultural sites of the Kumeyaay People. Dolomite Mine - historic ruins in the Carrizo Badlands! The Last Adventurer 2021-01-08 | Near Ocotillo, the southern Anza Borrego Desert has a number of interesting spots to explore, either on foot, or by off-roading. Located near the Dos Cabezas region, the ruins of the Dolomite Mine sit at the base of Mine Peak in the Coyote Mountains. For those with 4WD capabilities, this is a drive up adventure and an interesting area to explore; and for those that wish to hike, this is a stunning area in the Carrizo Badlands. Garnet Peak - some of the best views in San Diego county! The Last Adventurer 2020-12-29 | While there are many great spots to hike in San Diego county, among the top locations is Garnet Peak. At 5,900 feet of elevation, this is one of the high points of the county; and one of the spots that consistently has the best scenery. Although there are many ways to reach the top, the best route leaves from Penny Pines, heads along the PCT, and the Laguna escarpment, providing great views for almost the whole 4.2 mile roundtrip hike. Irrespective of whether one is an experienced, or a novice hiker, this is a hike that never disappoints.Snow! Burro Schmidt Tunnel - exploring a unique mining location in the Mojave! The Last Adventurer 2020-12-22 | From North to South, the Mojave Desert is chock full of interesting items, and many mining ruins. Out of all of these, none are more well known than the Burro Schmidt Tunnel in the El Paso Mountains. From 1906 to 1938, Burro Schmidt excavated over 2,000 feet through Copper Mountain, by hand leading to an amazing view of the desert on one side. More of a tunnel, and less of a mine, the site is full of legends - that Burro was mining a vein of gold along the tunnel's route - and that after his death, the tunnel is haunted by ghosts, demons, or something else. Jail Canyon - an off-road adventure to the ruins of the Corona Mine! The Last Adventurer 2020-12-07 | From the east to the west, Death Valley National Park is honeycombed with hundreds of abandoned mines and hundreds of stories. Some of the best preserved mines are found along the western border of the park in the Panamint Mountains. While some of these ruins are only accessible by a four wheel drive and a strenuous hike (Surprise Canyon), Jail Canyon showcases some well preserved ruins with only a limited hike, but an advanced off-road adventure. For those that have a four wheel drive vehicle, the route up Jail Canyon is a difficult - but enjoyable drive which has the payoff of the accessible and well-preserved ruins of the Corona Mine and Mill (founded 1899; abandoned in the 1980's). And for those that are willing to explore more on foot, the area has other hidden treasures. The Top Five Ghost Towns in Nevada! The Last Adventurer 2020-11-06 | From the south to the north, the Silver State is an area with rich history, particularly rich mining history. From Rhyolite on the western border, to Berlin in the Toquima mountains, many of these towns boomed - and then disappeared within a ten year span. Mizpah Hotel - the most haunted hotel in America! The Last Adventurer 2020-10-27 | While there are many haunted hotels spread across the United States and Nevada, none carries the amount of lore as the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah, Nevada. Founded in 1905, the hotel has a number of interesting stories connecting it to Wyatt Earp and Jack Dempsey, but is now known for its paranormal cache. The main ghost in the hotel is the infamous "Lady in Red", a working girl who was murdered outside rooms 502-504 on the fifth floor. Rumor has it, she has never left the hotel. In addition to this, the hotel also is rumored to house the ghosts of dead children, and some miners involved in an underground robbery. Cuyamaca Peak - San Diego Countys second highest peak! The Last Adventurer 2020-10-16 | At 6,512 feet of elevation, Cuyamaca Peak is only twenty feet shorter than Hot Springs Mountain, the highest peak in the county. However, despite being slightly shorter, Cuyamaca Peak is centrally located; and has amazing views of San Diego's backcountry. While there are plenty of trails to choose from, the most popular is the direct fire access road route to the summit. For those who prefer winter sports, the mountain also regularly receives winter snow. Finally, for those who want a challenge, Cuyamaca Peak and Stonewall Peak (it's nearby neighbor) can both be hiked in a day, as they are only six miles (Cuyamaca) and four miles (Stonewall) roundtrip each; leaving for a manageable ten mile hiking experience. Ooh Ahh Point - spectacular views of the Grand Canyon! The Last Adventurer 2020-10-08 | While the Grand Canyon is known for, and has nothing but views, the best views are found from the various points one can hike to in the canyon. While many of the trails are difficult and daunting, there are great introductory hikes, such as Ooh Ahh Point. Starting at the South Kaibab trailhead, the route follows the South Kaibab trail down 600 feet and .9 miles to Ooh Ahh Point that has expansive views to fit all hiking levels. However, like any trip into the canyon, hikers should remember what goes down - must always come back up. Boot Hill Cemetery - a grim (and maybe haunted) reminder of Nevadas former murder capital! The Last Adventurer 2020-09-23 | As a whole, Nevada is chock full of ghost towns and wild stories from its mining past. No location, however, is more infamous than that of Pioche, a mining town now located off of US-93. Founded in 1864, Pioche was the most violent and lawless town in Nevada for a period of time. From 1871-1872, Pioche accounted for 60% of the state's homicides. Further, during this time, 72 men were killed in gunfights before a natural death could occur. With all of these high noon standoffs and deaths, the town needed a place to deposit the remains, and placed the victims (and aggressors) on Boot Hill. The most infamous were laid in a row of a hundred graves ("Murderer's Row"), which remains today. If you visit, be sure to read the headstones as to causes and reasons for death. Like many cemeteries, the rumor is that Boot Hill is haunted; but the truth is it is an active cemetery for the town still - treat the area with respect if you visit. For those willing to walk, the cemetery also sits close in proximity to some mining ruins. Berlin Ghost Town - a well-preserved ruin with ancient fossils! The Last Adventurer 2020-09-18 | While Nevada has many ghost towns, none are as remote - or well preserved of that of Berlin. Founded in 1896, this boomtown was an abandoned ruin by 1911. Today, much of the town remains standing, preserved in a state of "arrested decay", just waiting for visitors to walk around and explore it. Unlike Bodie, California, there is no "curse" yet for removing objects (that I know of), but it is illegal. Visitors should exercise LNT principles when visiting this site. If the best preserved ghost town in Nevada was not a reason enough to visit Berlin, the fact that the state park also has the most ichthyosaur fossils in Nevada that can in part be viewed is also a great impetus to visit. Belmont - a living ghost town in the Toquima mountains! The Last Adventurer 2020-09-01 | Known for its signature and well-preserved Courthouse, Belmont is one of many sprawling ghost towns in Nevada. Founded in 1865, this town followed the boom and bust of many mining towns; booming when silver ore was plentiful; and busting when the ore ran out. Today, Belmont is a remote area in the Toquima Mountains which features the ruins of the past, interspersed with new construction in the present. International Car Forest - an amazing piece of Nevada art! Palmetto - the easiest ghost town to explore in Nevada! The Last Adventurer 2020-08-17 | As it is the "silver state", Nevada is full of the ruins and remnants of many mining ventures, many of which can now be explored. While many of these can be casually visited, the easiest ghost town to visit is the ruins of Palmetto, located right of NV-266 between Deep Springs and Lida. Because of its remote location, however, Palmetto is relatively well preserved. Patriarch Grove - a remote destination with the oldest trees on the planet! The Last Adventurer 2020-08-11 | One of the most remote locations in California is the White Mountains, running along the western border of Nevada. Located in the vast expanses of the White Mountains are the ancient bristlecone pines, the oldest living trees on earth. These trees, which can live for 4,000 to 5,000 years, once were part of a vast forest that grew in the nearby Great Basin. El Cajon Mountain - the legendary hardest hike in San Diego! The Last Adventurer 2020-07-21 | Other than perhaps, Cowles Mountain, Iron Mountain, and "Potato Chip Rock" (Mount Woodsen), no other mountain hiking destination receives as much discussion and hype as El Cajon Mountain (El Capitan). Long touted as San Diego's hardest hike for its distance (twelve miles roundtrip), its elevation gain (over 4,000 feet), and the hot hot heat of eastern San Diego, ECM is a challenging hike. Whether it - or other contenders like Otay Mountain, or Villager Peak are the "hardest" hikes is a subjective debate. Having said that, it is a hike full of challenges, for which hikers should be prepared for and have plenty of water; and one that like many other east county peaks, has a rich mining history. Dead Dolly Lane - a strange road in San Diegos backcountry! The Last Adventurer 2020-06-08 | In my opinion, some of the best adventures are ones that are unplanned. For example, if you want to see the Salton Sea Mudpots, you have to see Salvation Mountain - a large folk art installation. In San Diego, if you are traveling near, to, or from say, Lawson Peak or Horsethief Canyon, you may pass near a San Diego "folk art" installation, Dead Dolly Lane. As its on private property, I am not going to give out the exact location, but as the landowner has made the dolls and items visible from the nearby road, its not a secret either. If you either want a good laugh (as I think the landowner has intended) or want to have nightmares, this place is truly the spot for you. Morena Butte - great views located off of the Pacific Crest Trail! The Last Adventurer 2020-06-04 | At 3,925 feet of elevation, Morena Butte is a series of three "peaklets" that comprise the mountain found on the "100 peaks" list for San Diego county. In addition to having some of the best backcountry views in the county, Morena Butte has a rich history in San Diego county, as it was home to Charles Hatfield's "rain-making" experiment for the Morena Reservoir in 1916, and now is a rumored paranormal spot. The hike to the peak traverses the PCT for the first three miles, before transitioning up a rugged trail to the top. Tecate Peak - a sacred mountain located on the Mexico border! The Last Adventurer 2020-05-12 | At 3,885 feet of elevation, Tecate Peak is the most prominent mountain along the U.S. - Mexico border, and one of the "100 peaks" of the Sierra Club list for San Diego County. Tecate Peak is also a place of cultural and historic significance to the indigenous Kumeyaay People, who referred to the mountain originally as Kuuchamaa. Donohoe Mountain - a less explored peak in San Diegos backcountry! The Otay Mountain Wilderness is run by the BLM; and has many sub-areas, including Sycamore Canyon. Pyles Peak - a hidden gem in Mission Trails Regional Park! The Last Adventurer 2020-03-31 | At 1,379 feet of elevation, Pyles Peak is the second highest mountain in Mission Trails Regional Park; and the second tallest mountain within the confines of the city of San Diego. At six miles of roundtrip hiking distance, Pyles Peak is a more challenging hike than its neighbor, Cowles Mountain. However, the trek to Pyles Peak is either a two-for-one summit experience (or three-for-one) experience depending on how one views it, as one has to go up and over Cowles Mountain to get to Pyles and back over Cowles Mountain to finish the hike. Lower Rhyolite Trail - fantastic views in Chiricahua NM! The Last Adventurer 2020-02-25 | Located in southeastern Arizona, one of the more remote National Park units is Chiricahua National Monument, a place full of cultural and geologic history. While there are no bad places to visit in the park, a great place to start is the Lower Rhyolite Trail which provides great views of the park's signature geologic features, and provides an opportunity for longer hikes to more experienced hikers. Sycuan Peak - great views of San Diego from its backcountry! The Last Adventurer 2020-02-17 | One of the shortest hikes on the one hundred peaks list for San Diego County is little known Sycuan Peak. But, at 2,081 feet high this mountain has great views of the eastern half of San Diego county, including other nearby mountains; and on a clear day, the downtown and the Pacific Ocean. Dos Cabezas - a unique area with ruins, mines and more in Anza Borrego! The Last Adventurer 2020-02-15 | The Anza-Borrego desert is an area that is full of interesting stories, and interesting locations. Tucked away in the corner of Anza-Borrego state park is the Dos Cabezas region, which has man made ruins people can explore - the Dos Cabezas railway station - and the Dos Cabezas mine - and prehistoric ruins at nearby Indian Hill. If these features weren't enough, the area is also adjacent to a year-round spring; and the infamous Goat Canyon Trestle, the largest wooden railway trestle in North America. Los Pinos Mountain - a great climb in San Diegos backcountry! The Last Adventurer 2020-02-07 | At 4,805 feet of elevation, Los Pinos Mountain is one of San Diego County's taller mountains, and one of the hundred peaks on the Sierra Club's list. However, it is also more than that with a great climb that passes through single track trail up through a neat coulter pine forest. Mastodon Peak and Mine - a fun and easy hike in the southern part of Joshua Tree! The Last Adventurer 2020-01-25 | One of the many great things about Joshua Tree National Park is that based on its size, there are many different areas within the park. One of my favorites is the Cottonwood area, which has hikes to a number of areas, the easiest of which is the 2.4 mile roundtrip hike to Mastodon Peak, which allows hikers to have great 360 degree views of the park, and the Salton Sea, and experience some of the park's mining history at the nearby Mastodon Mine. For those looking for a longer hike, the trail to Mastodon Peak also heads out to the Lost Palm Oasis; and for those with lots of stamina, the two hikes can be combined for an over eight mile roundtrip trek. White Sands National Park - an amazing place to explore and adventure in! The Last Adventurer 2020-01-22 | While there are many spectacular places in the world, and in the United States National Park system, one of the best is the white sand dunes of White Sands National Park. Unlike other dunefields in the National Park system, these desert dunes in the Tularosa Basin are made of gypsum, which give them their unique color and appearance. For the casual explorer, and the active adventurer, White Sands provides a number of opportunities including hiking, sledding, or just plain relaxing in a pristine and scenic environment seemingly untouched by modern life. Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Hike in One Day - an epic adventure of a lifetime! The Slot - a super fun canyon to explore in the Anza Borrego Desert! Visitors should be prepared to remit a $10.00 fee to the park, and increased enforcement. The hike however, remains excellent. :)While Anza Borrego State Park is chock-full of interesting nooks and crannies, one of the best - and easiest places to explore in the Borrego Badlands is "the slot" a short canyon with sculpted sedimentary rock walls. McGinty Mountain - a fun hike with rumors, mines, and caves. The Last Adventurer 2019-11-13 | At 2,183 feet of elevation, McGinty Mountain on paper looks like many of San Diego's backcountry climbs. But, as one of San Diego's "100 Peaks", it is first a fun climb, and second an interesting area to explore. Prior to it being set aside for preservation, it was an active mining concern in the early twentieth century. This in turn has led to rumors that it was the fabled gold mine of an Anza-Borrego teller of tales, Pegleg Smith. Paiva Walkways - unique elevated hiking over a wooden walkway in Portugal! The Last Adventurer 2019-10-22 | While Portugal has many great hiking trails, the most unique trail is the Paiva Walkway, an eight kilometer one way route that ascends and descends wooden steps, suspension bridges, and travels along the bank of the Paiva River. Hikers can start the route at either of the two ends, Espiunca or Areinho. Along the way, there is plenty of amazing scenery, including but not limited to waterfalls, and riverfront beaches. Surprise Canyon - one of the best hikes in California! The Last Adventurer 2019-08-26 | One of the more remote areas in California, Surprise Canyon also features one of the more historic hikes up a former off-roading area to the ghost town of Panamint City. While there are many "surprises" on this hike, the main surprise is that a fair portion of this trek involves hiking through running water, a rarity in California, let alone Death Valley. For those that can route-find, the payoff is a series of mines, abandoned buildings, and amazing scenery that can all be explored over the course of ten to twelve miles roundtrip. Moon Caves - unique slot canyons and tunnels in Cathedral Gorge State Park The Last Adventurer 2019-07-26 | One of the best state parks in Nevada is located between Panaca and Pioche on Highway 93, Cathedral Gorge. The best and more accessible way to explore the stunning bentonite cliffs is to hike into either the Moon Caves region of the park, or the Cathedral Caves region. Fair warning, neither of these spots really feature "caves", but instead amazing sedimentary rock slot canyons that one can spend hours exploring. Due to its location, visitors should definitely visit Cathedral Gorge on the way to Great Basin National Park, but should take proper precautions to avoid heatstroke and stay hydrated, as temperatures in the park regularly exceed 90 degrees. Big Horn Mine - a scenic hike to an abandoned mine! The Last Adventurer 2019-06-29 | Founded in 1895 by Charles Tom Vincent, the Big Horn Mine was one of the most productive mines in the San Gabriel Mountains. Today, the Big Horn Mine is infamous in social media posts, with photographers and influences coming from near and afar to take pictures in the ruins. With over two miles of abandoned and partially flooded tunnels, the mine also is mecca for amateur and professional explorers alike.
