Misfits in the Prairie is a special ITG mod tournament conceptualized by CERiNG, inspired by the popular UK Sight Reading Tournament! It was hosted at the semi-annual Rumble in the Prairie, a series of smaller dance game tournaments held at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the Spring and Fall semesters.

An angel, Talis, wakes up in an vast prairie, having little memory of how she got there. In the distance, she sees a mysterious beam of light- what very well may be her only way out of the prairie, she makes her way towards it. Join Talis on her journey to the light and find out what's happening in Misfits in the Prairie!

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

It’s been a long while since I’ve done story-driven content. At the time of writing, it’s been over two years since Misfts in the Prairie, and 22 months since Aster’s Astral Adventure Chapter 0. I figured that, for such a big event, why not let it be the catalyst for getting back into what I was here for in the first place? Lore!!

Following in the step of Misfits, Talis once again returns to the spotlight, accompanied by another Nekomata Master banger. There were a couple of Nekomata songs I had in mind before starting on this file, but I ultimately chose chrono diver -fragment-, not only for the song title, but the lyrics and vocalist, which felt incredibly close to Talis and her plight. There are also a bunch of small musical parallels to nightbird lost wing (the third song in Standoff in the Twilight) that really tied this song together as the perfect prologue to Misfits.

At the very start of the file, we see a clock with a d-pad mod. This is intended to be the opposite of the “d-pad tease” opening in Fly far bounce. The detail of the clock is pretty important, and if you’re interested in why that is, I suggest taking a look at the spellcards. I think a lot Talis’ backstory will reveal itself right then and there.

Continuing on, the sky shader in the background is taken from Tetaes’ port of it in nightbird lost wing! I tweaked some values on it, and even wrote a special blend mode shader to handle color changes without having to mess with gross bit-shifting and otherwise time-consuming uniform tweening.

The mini-SCAR-sugarkill at 0:25 is a direct reference to the transition into nightbird lost wing from GAIA (Standoff, song 2), and we see the hills from Fly far bounce make an HD return in the subsequent section.

There’s a lot of Fun Math and Conditionals here on out that make the drunk/tipsy/orient that’s tied to the rhythm of the vocals as smooth as possible, even though the majority of it is just plain chart-to-lua. This was my first time using XeroOl’s Mirin Template, and overlaying eases and additive mods made this small effect actually possible!

At 0:52, we get a glimpse of the Veil from Misfits, but this time, we’re traveling away from it. Did you know that all of horizontal motion is the exact reverse of how the player travels in Fly far bounce?

At 1:07 we get another direct reference, this time to the ending of Standoff, with two playfields revolving around a centerpiece. In this case, it’s Talis, who is falling from the sky. The crossovers and mods in this section are actually just ripped straight out of Standoff’s chart and code! The Talis sprite was done by Aura (twitter.com/RedBirdRabbit), who has been helping a great deal with concept art, writing, and worldbuilding for the CERiNG portion of the Mods Cinematic Universe. I encourage you to give them your full support!!!

We end the file how we began, with the clock- however, this time, we’re following the “minute” hand around so that the d-pad rotates.

Despite this file almost not existing because of some personal stuff that popped up during Phase 1, I instead finished it for Phase 2 in around three days. I had to make it- the experience that Misfits in the Prairie brought me was priceless, and I wanted to let people know that it’s something that is constantly on my mind.

Neutrino was a song I had wanted to mod for literally over a year. I came across the song during a session of DDR A in November 2018 and I couldn't hear one bit of it, but was so intrigued by the BPM funnies I had to go home and listen to it later that night. I instantly fell in love with it, and I just had to mod it.

Enter Celestial Harbor, the RIP10.5 SRT hosted by Daikyi (youtube.com/yoshilkun). Stage 5, Dark Sheep (youtu.be/CI4cDxRBcEY) came and went, and I felt inspired to create a character based around the title of the song, rather than the song itself. I threw together some lore involving my limited knowledge of alchemy (thanks Opus Magnum), used part of my alternate alias, "asteradd", and created Aster- a Sheeb (no, not sheep) on the run from the National Guard of their home planet, Enotis.

I'll be revealing more about Aster's past and future in an episodic series known as "Aster's Astral Adventure". Stay tuned for various files and cutscenes!

Moving on to some Funny Things in this file...

From the beginning, we've got Classics of CERiNG D-Pad. There's a reference to the jacket art of Neutrino here, which is also where I got the design for Aster's birthmarks under their eyes! There's a few other references to the jacket art later in the file- it gets pretty obvious as time goes on.

Fun fact! The astrological sign for Aries- y'know, the Ram...kind of has a similar look to the jacket art references (♈).

The concept for Melanosis- that whole thing with Aster turning "evil" or whatever...wasn't just inspired by the title "Dark Sheep", but also the evident mood change in Neutrino from the very harmless sounding beginning and the first drop. TaroNuke (youtube.com/taro4012), who drew Aster's sprites for this stage, did an excellent job making that transition from Babey to Angy stand out with the inverted quad effect (he didn't even know the song was Neutrino...hoo hoo).

I really like how the counter-rotating orbits turned out @ 0:35 / 0:48. It's a subtle reference to Yggdrasil Leaf from NJSRT1, but also stays super intact with the overarching theme of Aster coming from outer space.

The sequence at 0:44 is absolutely my favorite part of Neutrino in terms of sound design. It's just...the coolest transitional sound ever and I decided to use a palette-switching CGA shader to make it Pop.

The wheel going into the 205 BPM section of the song is super cursed. I actually just copy-pasted the effect from the beginning and set the camera rotation + arrow counter-rotation to have the wheel face towards you, so during the transition out of this section, it's just going back to normal...

Another shoutout to TaroNuke for capturing that "Scary Face" aesthetic for the second half of Neutrino because I spammed the hell out of it in so many places...especially the little laugh before the final drop- it just Fits So Well. Speaking of which, the final drop is pretty much the effect that started it all- what I first envisioned in my head when I heard Neutrino!

There were like, so many jokes about how Aster was similar to Asriel from Undertale, in and out of the development circle- so I leaned into it fully for the ending of the file.

🡒 What is NJSRT?

The New Jersey Sight Reading Tournament is a brand new series of ITG mod tournaments from CERiNG, inspired by the popular UK Sight Reading Tournament! Ghost in the Machine serves as the first act of a massive story that's been in the works for almost 8 years.

As contestants prepare for the first ever NJSRT, the tables turn as a mysterious robot named Fives asks the participants to synchronize with a seemingly harmless ITG cabinet dubbed as a "Secure Remote Terminal". This "synchronization" allows the players to travel to where the REAL tournament is being held...in what seems to be an eerily parallel universe. Meet Val and her friends, get things set up, and step your way to victory at the first ever NJSRT!
