I was both exicted and anxious when I heard about the BBC and HBO adapting the His Dark Materials trilogy into a television series. And, oh my! How they have delivered. The first series has been fantastic, and I couldn't wait to start editing my long-planned vids. This one was more of a spontaneous idea that occurred to me last week, and I've really enjoyed examining the series in more depth as I've been working on the vid.

This is the first vid I’ve completed in a long time now. Life (PhD and work) came at me real fast in 2018, huh? But fortunately season four of Outlander came through and inspired me to finish this vid about Brianna that I’ve had in mind for quite some time. I am thoroughly enjoying season four so far, and my excitement and anticipation waiting for each new episode takes me back to the way I felt back when season one was airing. Yay!

I watched this film at the end of October and I was absolutely mesmerised. This film well and truly Fucked Me Up. I read the novel within a few days of watching the film, then went back to the cinema and watched it again the following day. I’ve now lost count of how many times I’ve seen it. As soon as I watched this film I had several vid ideas, and while I was so tempted to begin working on them when the screener leaked a few weeks ago, I decided that I ultimately wanted to wait until I could access a 1080p rip instead and I’m so glad I waited. I’ve been planning this vid since November, and it felt so good to finally work on it after waiting for the best part of three months.

In the absence of lyrics (this song only features four words, after all), I decided to really focus on letting the footage speak for itself. Please enjoy my heavy handed use of symbolism, jump cuts, parallels, dramatic cuts to black, etc.

I can’t make a Call Me By Your Name fanvid without mentioning four people. For one, Bella (xLiesForALiar) is the reason that this film was on my radar to begin with. I know the novel is really important to her, and she sent me the trailer for the film last summer. Additionally, Faayza (cynicalromantic) and Madihah have hugely added to my love for this film, and I am very happy that our CMBYN group chat is still very active four months later. And also a shoutout to Jo, who I absolutely loved raving about this film with on Twitter when we were both at the peak of our obsession last November.

Well... after starting a series of unfinished Outlander videos over the winter break and subsequently spiralling into a pit of despair and self-doubt, I was seriously beginning to question whether I am still capable of vidding Outlander. As of the end of season three, the show has undoubtedly shifted away from the generic conventions I became accustomed to in the first two seasons, and I began to doubt whether I could work with the new "feel" of the show. If you've seen any of my other Outlander vids, you may have gathered that I like to focus on the moral complexity of the darker and more sombre themes in the show, and many of these themes are no longer present in the same sense now that the Jacobite/Culloden/two husbands subplots have all been resolved. I read Voyager back in 2013 and had therefore been anticipating the shift in the tone, but I didn't anticipate how much it would affect my inspiration. Anyhow, it turns out that I was just being dramatic and was mistaken. So I hope you enjoy this. This song has been on my season three vid ideas playlist since day one.

For those of you who haven’t heard of this show, Dark is a German-language Netflix original series that was released earlier this month. If you like dark (heh) family dramas that happen to span generations and also the space-time continuum, this is the show for you. I very much enjoyed binge-watching it and subsequently making this vid.

I know there's already a staggering number of circa-2010 fanvids out there that have paired this song with a lot of other fandoms, but when I was listening to it in mid-August I realised that it's absolutely perfect for Claire's POV during her time away from Jamie this season and I immediately started editing this video to explore my own interpretation of the song. I've worked on it every week since and I have really enjoyed it, especially as this video gave me the chance to explore a lot of footage I haven't featured in my vids before (namely Bree!!!). I am really loving the way they've adapted Voyager so far.

If you know me, or if you’ve seen any of my other Outlander vids, you’ll know that I don’t romantically ship Claire and Frank, but I am fascinated by their dynamic. This video is my exploration of their relationship over the years leading up to Frank’s (un)timely death, focusing on the overwhelming weight of Claire’s second marriage to Jamie on her marriage to Frank when she returns to the twentieth century. I intentionally decided not to depict Jamie in this video but to symbolise his presence in other ways (yes, I *am* obsessed with the wedding rings and stones sequences in this show – can you blame me?!) to show how, even though he isn’t there and Frank is sometimes sceptical of his existence, he still very much plays a huge role in the decline of their marriage.

I thought this song (yes, I have just vidded two Laura Marling songs in a row… I love her and I want you to, too!), in all of its melancholy and its bitterness, provided a wonderful frame for me to explore the dynamic between Claire and Frank from Claire’s perspective. I have associated this song with Claire and Frank ever since I read Voyager and Drums of Autumn in 2013, so it was a real pleasure to finally bring my imagination to life.

This one goes out to all of my lovely Outlander friends on Twitter, who responded to my tweet about my intention to make this video (twitter.com/brioneh/status/907565707474477057) earlier this month with kind words of encouragement when I mentioned that I was feeling hesitant about receiving negativity or hate. To me, this video is the continuation of a series of Women of Game of Thrones videos that I’ve made over the years inspired by the wonderful music of my all-time favourite musician, Laura Marling. Part 1 in this series is Devil’s Spoke (youtube.com/watch?v=ufBc9-MJcjU), part two is Master Hunter (youtube.com/watch?v=IEVtw6k5mWw), this video is part three: Hope in the Air. I love her music so much, and for some reason it really, really inspires me when it comes to the Women of Thrones (just as Son Lux does when it comes to Skam, hah).

It’s only natural, to me, that part three in this series I’ve worked on over the years centres Sansa, as she has been my favourite character in the series from the very beginning. In this video I wanted to focus on Sansa’s storyline over the last few seasons of the show. In particular, I wanted to examine her sense of duty to her family as Eddard Stark’s “last serving daughter”.

This video undoubtedly has to go out to my girls on Twitter – Yasmin (hurleybird), Hannah (Hanneybean7), Cait (ccmrose), and all of my other Game of Thrones/fandom mutuals – who have spent so many hours and thousands of messages and tweets yelling about ASOIAF with me. Because even after all of the "pain and death and heartbreak", Claire will always return to Jamie - like a moth to a flame. This is the concept that I wanted to build this video around, and it's one of the reasons that I feature the different stone sequences so heavily throughout (on top of the fact that I absolutely love the way each one is filmed).

TL; DR – Because, apparently, I edit vids a lot when I’m extremely busy and stressed. And I’m also still trying to work through all of the emotions that I have about Sana Bakkoush. And I still can’t get over Sana’s pin cushion.

To me, so much of Sana’s character, at her core, is about striking a balance – between her faith and her love for science, between her head and her heart, between anger and restraint, prejudice and tolerance, love and hate. So many of the things that she helped her friends figure out throughout the series, and had to figure out for herself during season four, involved finding a way to negotiate the balance between these dichotomies – to find that somewhere in between the many directions she’s pulled in as, in her own words, “a Muslim girl in a faithless society… the biggest loser of them all”.

In this rather short and minimalistic video I really wanted to explore how she negotiates the balance between the love and compassion and empathy she has for her friends compared to the anger and trauma and resentment that she harbours from her lived experiences of Islamophobia, and to also examine how she ultimately sits somewhere in between Isak and Yousef’s perspective on this matter. The dialogue in those scenes were very pivotal moments in the season for me so I really wanted to focus on it.

Very conveniently, as Bella pointed out, this wonderful instrumental by August Wilhelmsson is aptly named Somewhere In Between. So I decided to roll with it. I hope you enjoy my interpretation of what this might mean for Sana.

TL;DR - This vid is what happens when you have writers block and you’re procrastinating and you can’t work on your thesis, and you also really ought to be packing up your belongings because you’re moving house next week.

In all honesty, I never anticipated that my first Skam vid after the finale would be a) a ship vid and b) about Noora and William in particular. Since the finale aired, I have started a number of Skam ensemble vids and abandoned them all. I’ve really been struggling with issues surrounding my perfectionism and my general lack of inspiration to edit Skam over the past month, despite a few requests and prompts. I am still very much totally and utterly in denial about the show coming to an end. I'm very sad about it.

The idea for this particular video came to me very suddenly this evening when I was taking a break from editing an Outlander vid I’ve nearly finished. I was listening to Lorde’s Supercut and thinking of Owen’s excellent Isak and Even vid (youtube.com/watch?v=9onXvDCljsE), and this was the next song that played from Melodrama. All of a sudden the idea for this vid was unfolding in my mind and now, a few hours later, here I am. As per usual, I have stayed on brand and edited another Sad and Angsty (this should come as no surprise to anybody has ever watched any of my other vids) Noorhelm vid… but I *did* try to play with the idea of subverting the meaning of the lyrics in the final act.

I also want to briefly say that I’ve been really moved, and at times a little overwhelmed, by the amazing response I’ve had to my two Sana videos (Smother youtube.com/watch?v=SVSK2ib1vdg and God Don’t Leave Me youtube.com/watch?v=xqRdR-guhWI) and to my recent collaboration with Bella/xLiesForALiar (youtube.com/watch?v=uoI2D0NSLHI / youtube.com/watch?v=8q6km8ioM0o). Here’s a little background information for anybody interested in how this collaboration came to be. Prepare for lots of sentimentality. I am very emotional about this vid.

SO, this whole video was largely the (unbeknownst) brainchild of a tweet that Zaneta (scinnlaeces on Twitter) sent to me at the end of April saying: “I've been listening to Two Men In Love by The Irrepressibles today and it just hit me "Briony/Bella Evak collab vid would END me" (see: twitter.com/scinnlaeces/status/858744135750225921). Little did she know, Bella had actually contacted me over a month before Zaneta sent this tweet asking if I’d ever be interested in making a collaboration with her (to which I was overwhelmed because I love Bella’s edits so damned much, but I replied very quickly saying something along the lines of a very emphatic “YES!!!1! OF COURSE!!”) but we were still, at the time, brainstorming about which song we could work with. And then Zaneta comes along at the perfect time with her perfect imagination - and voila!

Bella and I have since spent countless hours and long nights discussing and working on this together, and getting to know each other in between our editing sessions. We have both put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into every single inch of this video to make it feel as seamless and cohesive as we possibly could. We created 100 or so test video files to send to one another and discuss every. single. possible. detail. of the project. One thing that was really important to us when we set out planning the video (in a Google spreadsheet to end all spreadsheets – the organisation was seriously unrivalled, haha) was that it would have a really coherent and clear narrative, and that we’d take care to explore both Isak and Even’s point of view within the relationship, and I am so happy with the way that everything that we envisioned and hoped and aspired to create has materialised in this video.

The honesty and patience with which we approached collaborating on the planning and editing process was so impressive, and we worked so hard to ensure that we were on the exact same page for every aspect of the video. It was extremely important to both of us that this video would be a collaboration in every sense of the word, and I am so emotional about and proud of the way that we so harmoniously worked together to create this. Having never made a collaboration before, it has truly been such an incredible honour and such a pleasure to have made this with Bella. It’s also been wonderful getting to know her more throughout the editing process, and to have made a great friend along the way.

Because I’m finding Sana’s season deeply upsetting and difficult to watch so far, and I had to find a way to process it. I really didn't expect to make a Sana vid this early in the season, and yet I made this video this evening in just a few short hours (and with a little crying). Editing this was cathartic, and I hope that watching it may be cathartic for you, too, in some way.

I have absolutely loved this song for several years now, and I really hope that I was able to do Sana justice with it. She deserves it.

I feel somewhat apprehensive about uploading this video, as I'm not entirely sure how confident I feel about it. I spent a long time working and re-working the final segment of the vid. Apparently, and unsurprisingly, I feel much more at ease editing the angstier parts of vids than I do the happier parts.

Here's a vid about the ups and downs of Noora and William's relationship that I made to pass the time waiting for Season 4. In this video I wanted to capture many of the highs and lows of their relationship, and how this can be quite overwhelming and intense. When I was editing this over the past week or so, I wasn't all that focused on the lyrical interpretation, as the lyrics for this song are quite abstract. Instead, I wanted to work more with the ~atmosphere of the song.

I actually only started S3 last night, and I watched it all in one sitting. I cannot believe how impressive this show is. I had high expectations reading everyone's responses to it in recent weeks, and it still far surpassed my expectations. Additionally, this song has been on my vidding wish list since 2014, and I thought it was perfect for Isak and Even's relationship and their focus on parallel universes, or rather "alternate worlds".

I couldn't stop thinking about how much I wanted to make a Claire vid to The Staves' "Blood I Bled" ever since I first heard it on an EP they released last October. On a completely unrelated note, the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon has taken over my life this summer. It's going to be a show on Starz next year and I'd wholly recommend reading the books before it airs.

I essentially created this video as a sequel to my Devil's Spoke video, which also features a song from Laura Marling. You can view it here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufBc9-MJcjU. I wanted to focus a lot on movement again in a similar way to Devil's Spoke, however, this time with a different underlying theme. The key line in Devil's Spoke was, to me, 'all of this can be broken', but this video marks my attempt to give a voice to the growth of the female characters in season three which moved away from such fragility. This time round, the key line is 'I cured my skin and nothing gets in'. I wanted this video to be more explicitly about their resilience. Although, it's worth noting that Devil's Spoke was also a vid about resilience, it was more of an undertone whilst in this video I tried to make it more blatant. I also thought the song was interesting because the archetype of the hunter is usually associated with masculinity and I wanted to show how Game of Thrones subverts that.

To Build A Home (Downton Abbey)

briony 2013-03-08 | This is my entry for the final challenge of SYTYCV Season 3.

I decided to go for a very naturalistic and basic approach to this challenge, editing with a clear focus on emotional intensity. Downton Abbey is one of my favourite television shows and I decided making a tribute to the ensemble would be a great way to end my experience of SoYouThinkYouCanVid. I wanted to focus on certain thematic elements of the television show, such as continuity and change, life and death or love and sadness, within my video and hopefully you can see these reflected in my editing.

To be in the Top 6 out of 400 competitors is more than I ever could have imagined to achieve and I want to wish my peers in this round the best of luck!

Feedback on a project as important as this would be appreciated :)

Game of Thrones Season 2 Trailer (SYTYCV)

This is my entry for the Persuasive Challenge of Season 3 of SoYouThinkYouCanVid.

Judges Note - Firstly, thank you not only for allowing me into this round but also for awarding me 'Best Video' for the previous round. I was immensely flattered. I made this video rather quickly (so I had no chance for my inspiration to disappear) and I thus didn't really spend time formulating some coherent thoughts on certain techniques, although I did try to depict some of the different aspects of the show - drama, action, romance, fantasy, an epic, etc. in order to show how Game of Thrones can attract a range of audiences. I consciously only used title cards for the tag line because I wanted the clips to speak for themselves. Also, I realise that making a season one trailer would have probably been more logical for this challenge. However, as I have already made a season one trailer I wanted to avoid replicating a pre-existing video and I also thought that making a season two trailer would be more challenging for me, personally. I made all the title cards myself as I managed to get hold of the Game of Thrones font.

I am now at university in my first year so opportunities to spend time editing are far and few but hopefully I can do some editing when I'm next home at Christmas.

Laura Marling is one of my favourite artists and I have wanted to vid this song ever since I Speak Because I Can was released in 2010. I initially intended to vid it with Supernatural but I always felt I lacked the knowledge of the footage to make a video I was truly happy with. Earlier this week, I saw this graphic (http://red-jamie.tumblr.com/post/28912775251/a-woman-can-preach-a-woman-can-work-a-woman-can) on Tumblr whilst listening to the song on shuffle and...voila.

The Office: A Jim & Pam Retrospective (SYTYCV)

briony 2012-08-05 | This is my entry for the Instrumental Challenge of Season 3 of SoYouThinkYouCanVid.

I started two Sherlock vids, a Game of Thrones vid, a Blue Valentine vid and a Pride and Prejudice vid before I decided to make this less than two days ago.

I decided to stop trying so hard to create something really intense or heart-wrenching or dramatic (as I had intended four out of the five projects I initially started to be) and just go for the complete opposite - something much more stripped back and simple - and this is what I came up with. Honestly, I am quite happy with the result.

As this video was very much a spur of the moment why-do-I-have-all-these-Jim-Pam-feels-inside-of-me-all-of-a-sudden-that-I-need-to-vent kind of video, I didn't have as much time as usual to dwell on the reasoning behind certain editing techniques or clip selection but I hope that the video can speak for itself without my commentary :)

I wanted to try to focus on the whole ensemble but, at times, it was difficult because I felt that the footage of some of the characters wasn't really suitable for the tone of the song. My Stark love, as always, also kicked in.

Whilst I'm away for the next two weeks, it will be Alex's (Sparralex) birthday. I was intending to make this video for her but as she hasn't quite finished the second season yet (as far as I'm aware) I thought it would be kinda strange to do so haha. So, expect something else from me in the near future ;) I hope you have an awesome day free of aldog moments and I can't wait to see you in September!!
