Js ArchiveA partial recording of a high school talent show from Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut. There is no date on the tape but it is presumably from sometime in the 1990s. The video appears to be a home movie and not an official taping of the event, likely shot by one of the parents or siblings of a student involved in the event.
Text on tape: "Talent Show Weaver / High Scores" Tape was pretty rough in playback, it was partially recorded over The Essence Music Awards from 1992. I had to turn off the TBC for it and even then it still dropped and inserted frames during capture.

Archivists' Note: Can't find much about PEM Associates online but it appears that the director Philip Makan was a major personality in the Connecticut broadcast and television scene, though he sadly passed in 2022. He was a director at WHNB-TV 30 and WVIT TV 30 and according to his obituary he produced many documentaries. I'm glad that I got to preserve one of them here!Taming the Wave - Exploring NewTeks LightWave 3D (1992)Js Archive2024-08-06 | A 1992 VHS video titled "Taming the Wave - Exploring NewTek's LightWave 3D". Someone had an apparent interest in this science and made an approximately 30 minute VHS tape from various programming about the subject.
The first clip seems to be from an episode of Discover Magazine which focuses on a greenhouse in Providence, RI that is run by biologist John Todd and Scott Sargent. Les Guthman produced it and Joseph Campanella narrates. Greenlight Pictures and Walt Disney were also involved in the video.
The second clip is from Fox 25's New England Heroes of the Earth, which focuses on Marion Stoddart, John Todd, and Ocean Arks International. Once again the subject is living machines and waste water treatment. It appears to have been created by MCET.
The third clip is from the Discovery Channel "Invention" program, which focuses on the studio of famous Garfield cartoonist Jim Davis, who's studio gets its waste water treated by a living machine.
Text on VHS tape: "3 Segments: "Living Machines" 30 Min. Backup Copy."
Archivists' Note: I didn't expect to see Jim Davis on this tape, I was so confused while I had it transferring, I just looked down and saw Garfield. Super cool to hear Davis talk about the project though, I wonder what his studio is like now and if they continue to purify their waste water in that way.Harry (1987 ABC TV Series Episode) Starring Alan ArkinJs Archive2024-08-02 | A rare recording of an episode of Harry, a 1987 TV series that starred Alan Akrin and aired on ABC. This episode looks to be almost complete but may be missing the ending. I think the show is actually entirely lost as I couldn't find any other clips online and it didn't get a home video release. I have no idea when this aired exactly or on what station. The VHS tape I found it on had a few home recorded episodes of Chico and the Man from WHCT, but the latter third of the tape contained several episodes of various programming which involved Richard Lewis. As Lewis starred in this short lived show, I believe that's why someone bothered to record it at all.Vintage QVC TV Channel Recording with Unique Rainbow CorruptionJs Archive2024-08-01 | A recording of approximately two hours of the QVC home shopping TV channel from the 1990s, unremarkable except for the fact that the recording is very poor in quality and the picture appears reminiscent of a holograph with very rainbow coloring. I'm not sure what happened here, but my guess would be that either the TV wasn't tuned properly when the VHS tape was recorded or that this tape was re-recorded with other content and it didn't record properly. Either way, early in the video the QVC audio is lost and the audio of the Price is Right takes over. It's neat to watch just for odd way the rainbow effects warp the picture, but its also slightly funny that the commercial nature of the home shopping channel has been overlaid with a commercial gameshow. It's almost like an art project in that sense, this is definitively something you could toss in an art gallery and people would find profound. One of the more unique tapes I've digitized for sure!CBS WFSB TV Commercials - April 26, 1998Js Archive2024-07-30 | A supercut of TV commercials that aired on the Connecticut CBS affiliate station WFSB. It is currently owned by Univision. These commercials were taken from airings of Chico and the Man. Dated to January of 1987 based on content of the adverts.
Archivists' Note: This seems like a fairly rare find which is pretty cool. There's only a few other clips from WHCT online which appear to have been uploaded by a man who worked there in the 1980s and 90s. Neat!SPIKE TV & EA Sports: Madden NFL 12: Kickoff DVDJs Archive2024-07-22 | A rip of a promotional DVD released for the video game Madden NFL 12. Also included are a few commercials and station adverts, in addition to an EAS test. Recording has been dated to February of 1997 based on the content of the adverts.
Archivists' Note: This was a neat find! These pop up every now and then as I've seen other people who archive VHS upload similar sign offs but this was the first one I've personally found. I'm sure whoever recorded this did so accidentally, likely setting their VCR to record some late night programming and then forgetting to stop the record. It's cute to imagine they fell asleep in front of the TV and forgot, but the reality is likely they just programmed it wrong or something. Super cool either way, thank you whoever recorded this so I could buy it 27 years later at an estate sale and stumble across it :)Caring for Wood Furniture - July 1993Js Archive2024-07-17 | A video on caring for wood furniture from July of 1993. This video was recorded over the 1992 Essence Awards. Based on the content of the tape it likely dates to the early 1990s.

It is narrated by Benny Parsons who briefly discusses an ongoing internal promotion at AP Parts before an episode of NASCAR Video Magazine plays.
Archivists’ note: This seems to be a video that would’ve been shown to employees of AP Parts to inform them about the company’s 1993 Meet the Challenge program. The program incentivized employees to sell AP parts as they could collect rewards depending on how much they managed to sell. Unfortunately not much is shared about the program and the majority of the video is a NASCAR Video Magazine episode, which would be neat to watch at work I guess!Standard Motor Products GM Electronic Engine Fuel Controls - Corporate Training Video (1989)Js Archive2024-03-12 | A corporate training video from 1989 by Standard Motor Products that provides instruction on the electronic engine fuel controls in General Motors vehicles.
