Your first story this week is a rescue with a drone. Police from Dartmouth, Massachusetts used a thermal drone in the search of a missing 2 year old. Within 15 minutes of launching the drone, the child was found and rescuers were guided to the child’s location. The Dartmouth Police Chief said “Had it not been for the use of our drone and the excellent communication between my two officers, the outcome of this incident would have most likely been grave” This is another great use of drones and goes to show how powerful drone are as a tool!
The second story this week is DroneUp expanding deliveries into North Texas. DroneUp now has drone deliveries from 11 additional stores and can deliver over 10,000 items, weighing up to 10lbs. The delivery fee is just $3.99. Walmart and DroneUp aim to be in 5 states by year end (Which is pretty close…) and making deliveries from 34 stores.
The last story this week is about drone registrations. If you know someone who is getting a drone this holiday season, remind them that drones over 0.55 lbs or 250 grams that are flown recreationally need to be registered with the FAA. The ONLY place to register is the FAA DroneZone website and the cost is only $5 for 3 years. If you are being offered cards or lanyards, and it’s more than $5, you’re on a scheme website and NOT on the FAA website. Look for the .gov extension in the URL.

Your first story this week is AUVSI Drone Prepared. This is a country wide initiative to help coach state lawmakers on creating state specific laws on drones. The goal of the Drone Prepared program is to ensure states have uniform laws on drone use along with preventing the privatization of airspace. We think this is a fantastic idea, and we’re big proponents of accessible airspace. To discuss this topic, we have a guest today, Scott Shtofman, the manger of grassroots advocacy at AUVSI…
The second story this week is an update on Florida’s country of origin ban. If you’re not familiar, local, state and contract drone pilots are not allowed to use Chinese drones such as DJI or Autel in Florida. This does not affect civilians but has had a severe impact on public safety agencies across the state being grounded from using their DJI or Autel drones. And now the Florida legislature is opening comments on a cybersecurity rule for the state of Florida that may help to reduce or negate the affects of the Florida ban on non-blue UAS. Comments should be professional, and if you are a public safety agency, explain how not being allowed to utilize these drones would cost both time and lives. We’ll put a link down in the comments section.
Your third story this week is a teaser for the new ebee Vision. This is a new ISR (which stands for Intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) fixed wing drone with a reported 32x zoom, thermal payload, and 90 minute flight time. We are interested to see if this new ebee is a blue UAS, and if it retains the cat 3 designation of other ebees.
Your third story this week is new CBOs! Both Flite Test Community Association (FTCA) and the FPV Freedom Coalition are now approved CBOs! Their approved guidelines are now posted on their website and we are preparing a video comparison of all 3 currently approved CBOs. Remember that if you are flying recreationally, you must select CBO guidelines of your choice. The list of approved CBOs is posted on the FAA website. You can choose any CBO you like, and their guidelines are available for free.
Your final story this week, is that today is the end of the Remote ID extension for manufacturer compliance. Every drone manufactured for sale in the US (Even the ones on amazon…) need to be remote ID compliant… We’ve got some questions that we don’t really have the answer to. I’m not sharing these questions to stir the pot, I want everyone to think about this. Who is responsible for verifying that their drone is Remote ID compliant? What happens to home builders of drones operated under part 107? Who enforces if a manufacturer doesn’t comply? How do they enforce? How do you find the manufactured date of your drone to ensure it’s compliant?
Let us know what you think, and have a great weekend!REMOTE ID - DJI AVATA UPDATEPilot Institute2022-12-13 | ...Drone News: Pilot Fined w/o TRUST, New DJI Mini 3, Xwing working on Fighting WildfiresPilot Institute2022-12-09 | In this week’s drone news update, we’ll talk about a drone pilot getting fined for flying without a TRUST cert, the new DJI Mini 3, and An autonomous aviation company working with the FAA and large drones to battle wildfires.

Your first story this week is an Ohio man - Not a Florida man, surprising, right? - an Ohio man, who is facing charges related to flying a drone without a TRUST certificate… This is pretty big and is the first of these we’ve heard of, except that the drone pilot wasn’t exactly doing anything else wrong… The operator was hovering over a stadium in Columbus approximately 10 hours before the game. The stadium is in class G airspace, and there was no active TFR since the stadium TFRs don’t go up until 1 hour before the event. The Columbus Police counter-terrorism unit saw the drone over the stadium and tracked it to where the pilot was. The pilot stated he did not have a part 107 or a TRUST certificate. The Franklin County Municipal Court charged the man with two counts of operating an aircraft without a valid license. We’ll keep you updated on where this story goes but in the meantime, remember to take your TRUST for FREE at trust.pilotinstitute.com, it is required to fly recreationally.
Your second story this week is a follow up from last week, with the DJI Mini 3 being released! The Mini 3 is a cheaper version of the already released Mini 3 Pro. The drone has the same exact sensor but some reduced capabilities such as no obstacle avoidance sensors, no 48MP option, 4K30 instead of 60, no master shots, and Occusync 2.0 instead of 3.0. However, cost is reduced and flight time is increased. Maximum flight time is now 52 minutes and costs come to $639 for the DJI RC, which is $300 cheaper than the Mini 3 Pro with DJI RC. The Fly More Plus will top out at 798 . We’re excited to get our hands on this drone and test it out for you!
Your third story this week is an autonomous aviation company named Xwing is partnering with NASA and the FAA to use large drones and general aviation aircraft to extinguish wildfires. The company aims to use large drones similar to military UAVs to study how information is collected and how large UAS can be integrated into disaster relief situations. For the study, Xwing will use an autonomous Cessna Caravan with a safety pilot onboard. If we see any results of this study in the year to come, we’ll let you know!
And finally, we have TWO (Really three) new free Deep Dive courses available! The Autel Lite Plus and the Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom Deep dives are published! These courses are a great way to learn the ins and outs of your drone, and for free, it’s a price that can’t be beat! If you’re an airplane pilot we also have a free deep dive course about the Sporty’s electronic E6B.

In this week’s drone news update, we’ll talk about Matternet’s new FAA Production Certificate, New developments in DJI Data Security, and some Mini 3 sightings on the FCC’s website!
Your first story this week is Matternet, who has received a production certificate from the FAA. As you may recall, in September we reported on Matternet getting a standard type certificate for its M2 delivery drone. This allows Matternet to produce, test, and issue airworthiness certificates for its delivery drone, which is a big deal. Their drones essentially follow the same process that an aircraft manufacturer such as Piper, Cessna or even Boeing to build and maintain their aircraft. Matternet is the first drone delivery manufacturer to get this certificate. Their CEO will be on the PIXL drone show this Tuesday to discuss how they are using drones deliveries in the medical world.
Your second story this week is about DJI and data security. DJI made an announcement this week that both the Department of Commerce and the Canadian Center for Cyber Security have recognized their DJI Core Crypto Engine. The DJI Core Crypto Engine is a firmware cryptographic module that provides security services for the entire platform. This technology makes the drone compliant with the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2. This is a continuation of the ongoing debate about Chinese drones and cyber security that has been going on for the last 2+ years.
And finally, the Mini 3, not mini 3 pro, but the mini 3 has shown up in FCC filings, suggesting a release in the next few months. DJI Leaker @OsitaLV has also shared label information on the new drone, but information on the drone itself has been limited. We haven’t seen any other leaks regarding camera, sensor size, flight time, or pricing.
That’s it! Have a great weekend and we’ll see you next week!DJI Air 2S - Better than the Mavic 3 Classic?Pilot Institute2022-11-30 | Is the Air2S dead with the Mavic 3 Classic just coming out? The Mavic 3 Class vs the Air 2S… Which should you get?
Let’s first talk about the kits and pricing. Mavic 3 Classic is available in a number of kits, including without a controller, with the RC-N1, and the DJI RC. Prices vary for each kit, starting out at 1469 for the drone only, 1599 for the RC-N1 kit, and 1749 for the DJI RC Kit. The fly more kit also comes in two varieties, one with a shoulder bag and one with the backpack. These kits will put you back 599 and 649 respectively.
The Air 2S comes in two combos, the base aircraft combo and the fly more kit. The base kit is 999 on DJI’s website, while the fly more combo runs 1299.
So the Mavic 3 classic is more expensive but is it worth it?
Let’s talk about specs! The Mavic 3 classic has micro 4/3 sensor, variable aperture f/2.8-f/11, is capable of 20 MP photos, 5.1K50P video, uses O3+, and has a 46 minute flight time. The Air 2S has a 1” sensor, fixed aperture at f/2.8, is capable of 20 MP photos, 5.4K30P video, uses O3, and has a max flight time of 31 minutes.
A quick note about O3 and O3+… O3 transmits 1080P 30fps, while O3+ is 1080P 60 fps.
Let’s look at some comparative images from our camera chart. So which is right for you? The Air2S is less expensive, but has a smaller camera and has a shorter flight time. For entry level into the drone world, the Air 2S is hard to beat. It’s pretty cheap, still packs a good punch, great sensor size, and awesome utility. The Mavic 3 Classic could be an excellent upgrade or addition to your fleet if you’ve already got an Air 2S or are looking to start a business.
As for the camera comparison, we can’t make that decision for you. Which do you like more? Let us know in the comments and we’ll see you in the next video.Drone News: New DJI Mavic 3M Drone, 100 UAS accident reports, PI Student Saves LivesPilot Institute2022-11-25 | This week in drone news: A story of a Pilot Institute Student who saved two people in 9 days using drones, DJI released the Mavic 3 Multispectral & the new O3+ Air Unit this week, and a FOIA Showed 101 accidents reported to the FAA.

In this week’s drone news update, a Pilot Institute student saved a life with a drone, two new DJI products, a FOIA shows 100 UAS accident reports and our courses are… on sale…
Your first story this week is a Pilot Institute Student who saved a life. Texas Game Warden Michael Hummert responded to two search and rescue calls in central Texas in less than ten days. As the only thermal drone in the county, Hummert led deputies to the first missing individual who was in a restricted DOD airspace. Just nine days later officials reached out requesting assistance in another missing persons case. Hummert working in conjunction with federal officials was again successful in ensuring the person’s safety. Huge shout out to Warden Hummert and all first responders! Thanks for what you do!
Your second story this week is the new DJI air unit and the Mavic 3 Multispectral! O3+ has arrived in an air unit platform, and the video is amazing with 1080p 100fps in the goggles and 4K60 with rock steady recording in camera. We’ve got a review you can check out here where we tested the air unit in a number of torture tests! Also check out Drone XL’s article on the new air unit!
Also released this week is the Mavic 3 Multispectral, signaling the true end to the Phantom line up. The M3M uses a 4/3 CMOS sensor with 4 additional sensors in the Green, Red, Red Edge, and Near IR bands to collect data for agriculture. Each additional sensor is 5MP while the main sensor is 20MP with a mechanical shutter. As with the rest of the Mavic 3 enterprise line up, the M3M has an available SDK, RTK, and uses the DJI Pilot 2 App. For those who were waiting for a Phantom 5, it looks like this is it! This is the 6th Mavic 3 from DJI, and the 4th one this year.
Your third story this week is a FOIA request that showed 101 drone accident reports made to the FAA. Interesting notes are that 25 of the 101 pertain to near misses or collisions with manned aircraft, 8 were caused by fly aways, 7 by wind, 4 by low battery, and 3 were shot down. Many of the accidents were due to equipment malfunctions, however there are a few that are due to people being “That guy”. One discussed a person flying a mavic air 2 by an unlicensed operator who decided to go inside during the flight, resulting in the drone low-battery landing into a girl riding her bike resulting in lacerations to her face that required hospitalization. Remember that these were FAA reports, not NTSB reports. The NTSB reporting requirements are actually a lot lower than the FAA ones (which is only $500 in damage).
The last story this week is that our Black Friday sale is going strong today. All the courses in our catalog are currently at the lowest they will be this year, and I mean that. Our Part 107 course is $107 right now, our photo/video fundamentals course is $75, the real estate course is $49, the mapping bundle is $199. See the full list on our website.

In this week’s drone news update, the FAA is sneaking network remote ID back, first approved CBO (and a warning), LAANC providers say LAANC compliance is low and our courses are… on sale… Your first story this week is that network remote ID is back… Iconcept, network remote ID transmits remote ID information to the internet or cloud where is can be mass distributed via what the FAA calls “UAS Service Suppliers”. proposed as a Remote ID solution by the FAA but later taken down in the final ruling after massive pushback from the community in the form of 53,000 comments. The FAA instead settled on broadcast remote ID which only send the Remote ID signal locally. The network version would have required each drone to have some sort of network connection, which wasn’t going to be free… This week, a contract was awarded to a company called Anra Technologies to demonstrate the ability to collect, aggregate, and retransmit broadcast remote ID message and convert it into… you guessed it… network Remote ID. The idea behind this concept is to allow Remote ID to be used as a part of the Unmanned Traffic Management or UTM. Under UTM, Remote ID could be used to share the location of all drones in a specific area, and allow for traffic separation. This is a great concept as long as… the data “collected and aggregated” is not used to create paid highways in the sky, as some companies that I won’t name have been wanting to do. Airspace access must remain free. Please let me know in the comments what you think about this. The second story this week is also a big one. AMA announced that they are the first approved FAA community Based Organization or CBO. A few weeks ago, the FAA finally released guidelines that candidate for CBOs need to follow. We also made a video highlighting the need to keep CBO guidelines simple and concise, link up here. Sadly, the AMA guidelines are anything but that. The main document is 12 pages long. But worse, it links to over a dozen other documents, including 4 separate documents for FPV flying (outdoors AND indoors) and another 6-page document highlighting see and avoid guidance. Talk about concise. If you are going to use the AMA for your safety guidelines, we recommend you read ALL the documents and make sure you are familiar with them. You are liable BY LAW to follow those guidelines. For example, when flying FPV, if your drone is less than 2 pounds, you should maintain a minimum separation of 10 feet from pilots/helpers, and 25 feet from spectators, and 50 feet from vehicles/structures. I hope I didn’t make you spit your morning beverage. A final note about this story, the AMA guidelines are not easily accessible on their website. Our team had to dig to find them via a google search. Remember the FAA was clear that you DON’t need to pay any membership fees to fly under the rules of ANY CBOs. Let us know what you think in the comments. Your third story this week is also regarding USS. Aloft said in a study that only 20%-30% of flights that occur in controlled airspace have LAANC authorization. For this study, Aloft looked at two airports, Dulles (VA) and Harry Reid (NV). According to the article on DroneXL, the compliance number is likely so low due to DJI dropping out of the LAANC program due to security concerns.Drone News: Wifi Tracking Drone, M30T Rescue, BVLOS Waiver, DJI Mini 3 SE Leak?Pilot Institute2022-11-11 | This week in drone news: Researches have made a WiFi tracking drone and outline potential dangers, a DJI M30T was used just days after purchase to save a woman, Percepto has been approved for remote deploy of their drone in a box solution, this comes along with a BVLOS waiver nationwide, lastly there have been leaks and rumors regarding a DJI Mini 3 SE. What do you think the specs are going to be?

In this week’s drone news update we’ve got a wifi tracking drone, a drone rescue story, a BVLOS waiver for critical infrastructure monitoring, leaks for a possible Mini 3 SE, and a surprise, see if you can figure it out. Your first story this week is a device that can track wifi signals. Now this isn’t a novel concept, but when attached to a drone, the device can essentially map out the locations of any wifi enabled device within the detection range. This could be used by bad actors to pinpoint each wifi device including computers, TVs, smart devices, cameras, etc. The device used time of flight to detect to locate the devices however they can’t hack into or otherwise hijack the devices. This was a research project and was published on IEEE. Check out the link in the description. And for our second story, a drone was used to rescue a women after being in service for only 3 days. The M30T had been purchased by the Billet County Sheriff’s office on Nov. 1st, and on the 4th, located a missing women in a wooded area. Family and others had been searching for nearly 4 hours when the drone was deployed. Within 15 minutes of the drone’s deployment, medical personnel were at the missing women providing attention. This is the kind of drones for good stories that we love to discuss! The next story this week is a beyond visual line of sight waiver for Percepto. This waiver allows for flying beyond visual line of sight for certain critical infrastructure sites that meet the requirements and utilize the Percepto drone-in-a-box solutions. With this waiver, customers with qualifying sites won’t need to request their own waivers. This is an interesting waiver for utilities and we’re excited to see where else these waivers could be implemented. Next story this week is a rumor of a DJI Mini 3 SE. Leaked photos show a new Mini 2 style drone possibly with obstacle avoidance and a new or a different transmitter. DealsDrone, notorious DJI leaker said “A new drone, but I don’t know which manufacturer it is”. We’ll have to see what happens with the leak!Drone News: Flying Over People Legally, Mavic 3 Classic, PI SkyeBrowse CoursePilot Institute2022-11-04 | This week in drone news, the senseFly (now AGEagle) eBee was approved as the first class 3 drone this week, this means it will be legal to fly over people, DJI releases the Mavic 3 Classic, a more simple version of the base Mavic 3, and Pilot Institute published a free course on how to 3d map with SkyeBrowse!

In this week’s drone news update we will cover the first categorized drone allowed to fly over people. DJI released the Mavic 3 classic and a new free Pilot Institute Course!
Your top story this week is the ebee drone, which received category 3 approval from the FAA. This approval allows the ebee to fly over people if they are inside a restricted area and the people are notified. This also excludes flying over open air assembly. To be clear, this is the ONLY drone approved at the moment as Category 3, there are NO drones authorized as category 2, and very few authorized as category 1. So no, your drone can’t do that at the moment. Tell us which drone you would like to see getting approval next and how you would use this capability.
The second story is the Mavic 3 Classic release. It is a cheaper version of the Mavic 3, without the tele lens and with more controller options. You still get the same great micro 4/3, 5.1k50p video, 20 MP photos, variable aperture, and 46 minutes of flight time. We receive a model for testing and will have more videos out shortly so be sure to subscribe to get notified.
Last story this week, with the Skyebrowse Freemium release, we’re releasing a Skyebrowse course! This is a free course on the basics of capturing data, making your models, and annotating the models, taught by Jeff Clementi, a long time user of the product and VP of business development at Skyebrowse. If you downloaded the free version last week and tested it, let us know what you think.

Welcome to your weekly UAS news update Halloween Edition, we have 3 stories for you this week: Skyebrowse Freemium, new upcoming rules for Recreational Pilots, and finally we have DJI updates for the Mavic 3 Classic, Air 2S, and Mini3 Pro! Let’s get to it!
For this second story, let’s talk about new potential rules for recreational pilots. The FAA released a new Advisory Circular, AC 91.57C which finally sets guidance for selecting Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). As planned 4 years ago, the FAA will soon be approving CBOs and their guidelines. Remember that by law, you have to select a CBO guidelines if you’re flying your drone for recreational purposes. And these guidelines are gonna quite in depth according to this new document. We’ve got a video out to explain all that and I’ll be honest, there are a lot of changes. We’ll leave a link in the description to the DroneXL article and to the AC itself but be sure to watch the video.
Your final story this week is kind of a combo story. The first portion is the Mavic 3 Classic. The alleged release date is yesterday as you are watching this… So I guess we will find out if this is the case or not! There haven’t been many leaks on the Mavic 3 Classic, but we’re thinking there may be more prior to release. Either way, leaks currently show a $1400 price tag and compatibility with the DJI RC (The one that came with the Mini 3 Pro). We’ll keep you updated if we learn more or see any more leaks!
The DJI Air 2S is also in the news, leaks show it bundled with the DJI RC! This would be an awesome combo, once it comes to the US Market. We anticipate this will happen before Black Friday, but time will tell.
The third portion of this story is an update to the DJI Fly app. While we don’t normally talk about firmware updates, this is a big one due to remote ID. Once updated, remote ID can no longer be disabled and this version, 1.7.8, is required to fly in the US. Other features include ISO priority and support of Master Shorts in Portrait Mode.
That’s all we’ve got! Please like, subscribe, and leave comments down below! We’re always happy to answer your questions! And we’ll see you guys next week! What does this mean for Recreational Flyers? - FAA Community Based OrganizationsPilot Institute2022-10-26 | The FAA just released AC 91-57C which hints at guidelines for community-based organizations. How will this affect the rules for recreational flyers going forward? How will this affect you? How will the FAA change its rules in the future?
Make sure to support CBOs, as they are an asset to the flight community:

The FAA just published a new document that hints at what Community Based Organizations guidelines for recreational flyers In this video I am going to explain what Community based organizations are and what the FAA is expecting CBOs to have in their guidelines, and most importantly how this is going to affect YOU. SHOULD do to fly a drone safely. Now, it also contains information about Community Based Organizations Guidelines. It's a non-for-profit group whose mission is to further model aviation, and is approved by the FAA. Recreational rules requires you to follow the guidelines of a CBO but until now, the FAA didn't approve neither CBOs nor guidelines!! This is what this document is for. The FAA says that CBOs will be able to submit guidelines for approval that pertain to the operations of their users. For example, FliteTest will have guidelines for foam and model airplanes while the FPV freedom coalition will have guidelines for FPV drones. I'm sure there will be others too. Now this may seem all nice and dandy but there's a bit of a catch. Up until now, the recreational rules were rather simple: 9 bullet points, or 8 depending on who you ask. Those can't change without an act of Congress. But you always needed to follow safety guidelines... it's just that none were in place until now. With this document, the FAA is putting the onus on the CBOs to create new rules in addition to what is already in USC 44809 (that's the regulation code for recreational rules)... When the FAA asked for comments, I replied that these rules needed to stay simple. I was actually surprised to see that some of my comments made it word to word in the final document. But the overall tone of the document is still the same to me. The FAA is asking the CBO guidelines to be... well... too complicated. And let's be clear. The FAA doesn't say: "These are the guidelines you NEED to have". They basically say: "In order for us to approve these guidelines, we highly recommend you have the following... wink wink" It's like the mob boss telling you they're taking someone out for an airing... Don't get me wrong, we need recreational flyers to be educated and doing the right thing. No one believe this more than I do. But, there's a fine balance between safety and overkill. Too many rules means no one reads the rules or follows them. Too many rules also means someone needs to enforce them. And let's face it, the FAA doesn't have a good track record of doing that to date. We have a hard enough time right now getting people to understand and follow 9 rules. What are those new guidelines going to look like? Well, there will be restrictions about flying over people. That's right, there aren't any right now in USC 44809! There will be common sense restrictions about carrying HAZMAT or weapons, or not flying carelessly or recklessly (the FAA inspector's favorite words), and not flying in airspace that's temporarily restricted. And some mentions of pre, during and post flight safety. To me, those are great guidelines. And for those who will fly FPV, there's an entire special paragraph aimed at making sure you're proficient to fly your FPV gear. And a big emphasis on visual line of sight and visual observer. And communications procedures. And Preflight inspection, again. Then for everyone, not just FPV pilots, there will be guidelines on maintenance and record keeping. And software updates. And guidanceDrone News: 80K Drone IDs Leaked, Drone Spying, Dodgers Game Flight, and AZDrone Fest 2022Pilot Institute2022-10-21 | This week in drone news: over eighty thousand drone identification numbers were leaked causing panic and distrust; the database was a result of an aeroscope user not DJI; the Drone was reported as spying but in fact it was just an FP&L drone doing inspections not related to the accuser; the recent Dodgers/Padres game in San Diego was interrupted by a rogue drone flying over first base; lastly, we will be attending AZDrone fest this weekend, come say hi!

This requirement includes the transmission of the drone's location, altitude, heading, and the location of take-off or the ground station. Remote ID compliance is required for manufacturers by September 16th, 2022 unless the manufacturer is actively working on compliance. In this case, the compliance date is Dec. 16th, 2022. Compliance for all remote pilots (Including RC Airplanes, multirotor drones, and RC helicopters) is required by September 16th, 2023. If the aircraft is required to be registered, remote ID is required.

Remote ID was upheld in the US. Court of Appeals this week. Race Day Quads sued the FAA based on the 4th amendment, procedural Mis-steps, and concerns of pilot safety. “Remote ID technology requires drones in flight to emit publicly readable radio signals reflecting certain identifying information, including their serial number, location, and performance information. Those signals can be received, and the Remote ID information read, by smart phones and similar devices using a downloadable application available to the FAA, government entities, and members of the public, including other aircraft operators.” For a full analysis, see our live stream and the article from DroneXL! dronexl.co/2022/07/29/faas-remote-id-for-drones-upheld-in-court
