The concealment comes at a price, making it a worse design in an open duel compared to a traditional katana. But does it make up for its drawbacks through its unexpected effectiveness for self-defense in a surprise attack on the street?
Let's take a closer look at its pros & cons and how it works, as well as what distinguishes a Shikomizue from a Shirasaya mount.
#skallagrim #katana #shirasaya #shikomizue #samurai #kenjutsuDoes this Dirty Trick Actually Work in a Sword Fight?Skallagrim2024-05-08 | Is it even really a dirty trick, or was it just part of a "whatever it takes" mentality back in history? If you had to defend your life on medieval streets or a battlefield, would it really matter whether throwing your secondary short sword or dagger in the opponent's face is "dishonorable", as long as you win?
And would it even be effective? Let's take a look at an example from Japanese Kenjutsu, as well as a few European manuscripts that show this kind of "cheap" tactic.

#skallagrim #sword #swordfighting #katana #kenjutsu #HEMAThis Destructive Shield Test Almost Went Wrong...Skallagrim2024-05-04 | I got an undecorated version of the Ottoman Kalkan reproduction from Salahs Archery to do destructive testing on, and it didn't go quite the way I expected.
The shield took a lot of damage but did its job well, especially considering how light it is. I started with hits from blunt swords and a bit of sparring, then shot it with a modern crossbow (the Cold Steel Cheap Shot) and a medieval crossbow with different bolts. Finally I leaned full into the destructive test with swords, a spear, a war hammer, a flanged mace, and an axe.
Definitely goes to show the main drawback of strapped shields (compared to centergrip)...

The sliciest of swords (technical term). This is my test and review of the LK Chen shamshir, a remarkably light but powerful saber.
It's a reproduction of a 19th century Persian shamshir at the Metropolitan museum in New York city, and the historical accuracy is a lot higher than most of what you find on the market in this comparatively modest price range.
I went a little overboard with hardwood cores in the tatami mats I was testing several swords on, and while I struggled with most of them, the shamshir was like a cheat code that brought the difficulty way down. Quite impressive!
Hope you enjoy the epic scenery... Filming in this location was a little challenging.

It all started with a fake memory I had of Conan chopping up the chain that was binding Zula in Conan the Destroyer (1984). Turns out it was a braided rope all along... good old VHS "quality" made it look like a chain when I watched it as a kid / teenager.
Anyway, it's not an uncommon fantasy trope... the hero frees a prisoner by cutting straight through their shackles with a mystically indestructible sword. So I wanted to test how that works in real life... with a much smaller chain.
Result? Not quite as heroic as the movies... but see for yourself.

It has realistic elements but doesn't go exceptionally far, as shown by the fighters spending a quarter of the match with their back turned to the opponent in some spinning helicopter of doom move (I exaggerate, of course). Overall the feel is sort of in between arcade-like action and more methodical realism.

Partial armor is quite popular in fantasy art, movies, anime, and video games, be it in the form of barbarian or gladiator equipment or... titillating female warrior outfits. This is a unique case though... an exceptionally realistic portrayal of a medieval suit of plate, but with breasts instead of breastplate. :D
Of course back in real-life history not everyone could afford a full set, and some protection is better than none. Also there are techniques and guard positions to fight from which minimize certain target areas. Another consideration is mobility and over-heating. So let's over-think it a little... how much could a knight / solder / mercenary gain from ditching the body armor but keeping he helmet, gorget, and limb protection?
