I’ve intended for a very long time to cut an essay on parasocial relationships. After researching the subject on and off for months I realized I would either have to put together something very, very, long and dense even by my standards OR split it up into smaller parts. I feel like this is a subject that benefits from being split up into distinct sections so here is part one of a four-part series on parasocial relationships. An overwhelming amount of academic research has been done on this subject so I might end up making more than four videos depending on what I find, but for now four is a conservative estimate in the interest of not spreading the information too thin.
All of the background music on this one is Lemon Demon :)

Movies I talk about so it's easier for y'all to google titles if you want: The Mystery of Mamo (has various names but that's the main one in the US) The Castle of Cagliostro The Koike specials I refer to are Jigen's Gravestone, Goemon's Bloodspray, and Fujiko's Lie. I'd recommend the middle one over the others.StrucciWatch: Noroi and Lake Mungo ReviewStrucciMovies2020-12-05 | patreon.com/StrucciMovies ko-fi.com/struccimovies struccimovies.bigcartel.com
I'm setting this to upload late at night and will type up/add a comment with extra thoughts whenever I wake up hahaadult swim just cancelled the best show on televisionStrucciMovies2020-09-12 | "What if a raunchy parody of Jonny Quest and other old school adventure cartoons grew into one of the richest, funniest, and most human shows on television? What if two pop culture geniuses and their tiny crew spent 17 years and seven seasons crafting a show that quickly grew tired of making fun of its world and instead chose to invest in it with layered mythology, complex characters, and fascinating mysteries? What if the crude animation of the early seasons evolved into quietly beautiful work, showcasing stunning action, brilliant character designs, and a downright cinematic framing? The Venture Bros. was the quiet miracle of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim line-up, an always-evolving magic trick that was never content to sit still. A silly cartoon that learned to let its characters, and stakes, matter."

Download the game for free here: kensho.itch.io/smalls-island-woes . The commentary will probably make more sense if you have played it, but hopefully you'll get some insight into the process of making a game in a weekend either way!

Paul Byron, Shelby Lee, and Joel Ruiz)StrucciMovies2020-03-10 | I cut this review months ago but I also wanted to edit in segments from an interview I did with my co-hosts about how they feel about Masks. So to celebrate March Masksness ( twitter.com/MarchMasksness ) I did that and finally finished the video!
As a note OK Go does an alternate version of Return live with a whole lot of bells- youtube.com/watch?v=H0G5JONUAuE It's lovely but I prefer the original version where you kind of have to dig through the sound to realize how sad the song is vs it being raw with a lot of haunting bells and stuff.
amara.org/v/CZr4byoutube: bad?StrucciMovies2020-01-29 | Couple notes are that the "my friend likes your lips" tweets I show screenshots of in this video may have been in response to a video I posted on twitter and not due to YouTube. I have no idea though and never interacted with those people enough to find out. Most or all of the other gross comments I post here, even though a lot were anonymous, I do feel like in one form or another stem from my YouTube channel. Also I realized that one time while we did a big streaming event for Critical Bits one person in twitch chat did call us ugly nerds or something. But I think that is absolutely the only time I've ever gotten anything even coming close to harassment off of the show. Unlike YouTube where I get weird or gross or angry messages daily or almost daily. Haha. What a nightmare!

amara.org/v/noSzCritical Bits Episode 1: Welcome to HeavendaleStrucciMovies2019-02-19 | Joel runs the audio equipment during recordings and edits the podcast episodes as well as running it as the GM. The other players are Shelby Lee and Paul Byron.
The audio I used for this is mostly unedited from Joel's original cut, though I added a few sound effects to accent visual gags and removed a moment or two of stuttering or etc. I drew all of the character art and edited (mostly public domain) photos for the backgrounds (also used Joel's original "Welcome to Heavendale" promo image and some clipart I found to save time for the wrench and etc). I animated all of this myself in Adobe Premiere and for the art I hand-drew the lineart then colored it in photoshop (hopefully getting a tablet soon to save time!). I did not charge patrons for this video. As of now I don't directly get money from the Critical Bits patreon either. We're using it to pay for stock music and hosting and will eventually use it for better audio equipment and etc.
Normally I just do whatever I want with my channel regardless of views/engagement and focus on what I think is important but honestly this was a ton of work for no money so whether I do more of these or not (or just do 5-min trailer versions of episodes instead) will depend on the response.

amara.org/v/miArStrucciWatch: Sorry to Bother You Review *re-upload*StrucciMovies2018-11-25 | after multiple attempts I think this version is good to go. Originally posted July 24, 2018
- A lot of reviews complained this movie was too long but I didn't think that at all. I think the length better permits the switching between tones/genres which makes the film weirder and more interesting.
- I have seen the V/H/S segment "Safe Haven" but it's been years since I've seen it and also didn't want to compare this film to it, both for time constraints and having to tiptoe around spoilers.
- I think seeing Hot Fuzz so many times better prepared me to pick up on Wicker Man vibes
- The ransom letter is very Silent Hill 2-esque as are the weird wicker-headed people but Apostle is SO DIFFERENT from Silent Hill tonally and stylistically that I can't really concede the comparison.
- The Boxer Rebellion bit seemed pretty weird and racist. Like here come scary violent Chinese men yelling in Chinese! Oh no!!!! But I would need to rewatch the film, know more about Evans/his filmography, know more about the historical context, know more about the Boxcar Rebellion/Peking's history (and how missionaries were involved), and spend more time thinking about the place of religion GENERALLY in this film (it seems like an anti-organized religion film, so the film may be more on the rebellion's "side" than the scene suggests in a vacuum, and maybe what happened was good for Richardson in the long run? or at least part of his path/fate). And as always I feel weird pretending I have any authority on drawing a line re:race as a white person
- The portrayal of women in this movie is interesting and just kind of a lot to process haha. In some ways it's a film about how humans are corrupt, but further than that how men specifically (fathers, male religious readers) can be corrupt and abusive, INCLUDING towards other men, and women are shown as more pure, kind, and naive. A bit simplistic but overall I liked it? Again would need to rewatch. I like a lot that the goddess was sympathetic, even if she was in the long run tricking Richardson into taking her place. I could imagine a young/sexualized goddess in a much worse movie and I'm glad she was old and sad and gross and often sympathetic rather than like Poison Ivy or something

amara.org/v/k2PmSpirit Phone Review/AnalysisStrucciMovies2018-07-18 | Would come up with some kind of catchy series title but I don't see myself doing many album reviews haha. A lot of this was in response to seeing reviews that said Spirit Phone didn't have a lot connecting the songs which was the opposite of how I read it. Some of the stuff I reference I found out was connected to the songs over the past two years in like YouTube comments sections or GENIUS or whatever and some of it has been connections I made myself so I don't really have research links. Some of the lyrics weren't what I had heard/expected but I got them off of the official bandcamp so shrug.
“I knew that I really wanted to make a film about the corrosive effects of trauma on a family unit. I knew that I wanted to make a film that had sort of an ouroboros quality about a family that’s basically eating itself in its grief. It’s a story that I certainly had in me. I didn’t really have to find it.”
“It is a film about suffering. I hope that horror fans come to this and feel gratified and have a good time and really enjoy whatever it is we’ve done. But then I do feel that there are people who are in a bad place who are really struggling, and there’s sometimes something about seeing a downbeat nihilistic movie when you’re not at your best, and when life is just not being fair, which life has a way of doing every now and then. Sometimes disaster can strike in a way that people don’t recover immediately from, and sometimes people don’t ever recover.
[Hereditary] is ultimately a very operatic, melodramatic thing that will make you feel a lot of things and you might not want to feel them. But I hope it’s an experience.”
