#photography #exhibition #inspirationYou Should Print Your Photos! Heres Why and How...Simon Baxter2024-01-15 | Printing your photographs is extremely rewarding. It can be expensive, time consuming, and sometimes frustrating, but it's one the best investments you can make in a quest to improve your photography. The vast array of textures, colours, and complex details make woodland a very special and fascinating environment to photograph. Those qualities are begging to be printed! In this episode I print one of my favourite woodland images from autumn 2022 and a magical hoar frost image from December 2022. Although I cover some practical details, this video is about WHY you should print. Please enjoy!

Tom and I ventured out on a cold and windy morning in December 2018 in the hope of photographing trees in the drama of a snowy blizzard. It wasn't to be, so we archived the footage with the intention of returning one day. 5 years later and a last minute decision to meet-up, and we were rewarded with a stunning morning of frost, snow, fog, and an eerie, enveloping stillness.

Don't get me wrong, good woodland photography in clear conditions isn't what you would call 'easy', but that also depends upon your expectations and what you're trying to achieve. Most of us crave mist, but the truth is that many photographers rarely get to experience its magic in their local woodland. Although the hit rate is lower, some of my all time favourite woodland/tree images are without mist or fog - probably because their strength has been heavily weighted towards composition and subtlety, rather than conditions and wow factor. Embrace what you're offered and see where it takes you :)

#outdoors #photography #woodlandLink in the comments 👇😄Simon Baxter2023-10-15 | ...A Great End to my Photography in WalesSimon Baxter2023-09-25 | The conditions don't have to be magical to find great scenes to photograph in a temperate rainforest, but I do like to be wet. The rich diversity of bryophytes and epiphytes are there exactly because of the rain, humidity, and clean air. That richness comes to life when everything is dripping wet and glistening in the soft light. My final video from this trip was unexpectedly made during a brief wander after saying goodbye to Ben. I'd only intended to scout, but I grabbed my gear to enjoy a couple of hours of filming and woodland photography. I'm so glad that I did!

#photography #teaching #rainforestThese Trees are Enchanted | Summer Woodland PhotographySimon Baxter2023-08-28 | There's nothing I love more than photographing somewhere new - discovering new trees, teasing out compositions, and feeling the excitement boil up inside. Episode 1 from my recent trip to photograph more of the Atlantic Rainforests of Great Britain. Despite the lacklustre conditions for woodland photography, I had a wonderful time exploring these magical pockets of oak woodland. Wizened, writhing, and wiggling communities of enchanted oak trees - you can't beat it!
Looking forward to sharing episode 2!

#woodlandphotography #landscapephotography #rainforestHow Photographers Think (feat. Joe Cornish & Simon Baxter)Simon Baxter2023-07-23 | Some unseen footage from the wonderful Woodland Sanctuary exhibition which launched 1 year ago. It was undoubtedly a highlight of my photography career so I'm very pleased to share some more insightful discussion between Joe Cornish and I.
There's been lots of questions about camera gear and the picture frames, so here's a brief overview:
The oldest print in the exhibition was Passing Through, which I made in January 2016 on a Sony A7ii 24 MP mirrorless camera. Most of the other photos by me were made with a Sony A7Riii mirrorless 42MP camera and 24-70mm GM Sony lens. Joe had also used the A7Riii, but many of his images were made with the Phase One 150MP digital back. When viewed at the intended viewing distance, all the prints looked fantastically together.
The prints weren't glazed which allowed the detail and colour to really shine. The frames were custom made using solid ash wood. Materials were kept to a minimum. A smooth matt cotton paper was used throughout.

Compositionally, I’m pretty happy with what I have but time will tell if I can build upon them if I’m able to return to this location.

#photography #books #inspirationWoodland Photography with the 150MP Phase One XTSimon Baxter2022-11-20 | One of the best things about a good quality woodland is the fascinating combinations of everchanging colours, textures, light, and shadow. The detail is so beautifully intricate that a high-resolution camera is ideal for capturing the intricacies and then rendering them in print. I was delighted when Phase One offered to lend me their XT system for several weeks, so I put it to good use in my local woodland. The conditions were less than favourable but woodland photography never fails to be enjoyable. The first images shown were made last month and I've blended these into more recent work to highlight the seasonal changes.

Woodland Sanctuary is a joint exhibition between myself and Joe Cornish. The work was gathered over the last 6 years, all of it within the North York Moors National Park. I've decided to share it online so that it can be enjoyed by all.
The exhibition consists of 9 themes which reflect the preoccupations and imaginative journeys of the photographers during their time in the woods. The images reflect the intense experience of studying trees in all weather conditions and all times of year.
There will be a series of events starting on the 16th July including exhibition tours & talks, guest presentations and a special in conversation evening on the 23rd July.
Limited tickets are available from here: https://baxter.photos/woodland-photography-exhibition-event/

Woodlands are such curious places and the curious mind will never stop learning, discovering and finding fulfilment in the smallest of details. I'll never be an expert in those fields but it sure adds to the experience of woodland photography and enriches both the creative process and output.

#WoodlandPhotography #Pareidolia #TreesWeird & Wonderful Nature with Lucy LapwingSimon Baxter2021-07-10 | My own journey through woodland photography continues to be enriched as I begin to learn more about the trees, their significance and the habitat they support. However, the deeper I dive, the more I realise how little I know about these wonderful places. @LucyLapwing joins me for a fun and fascinating episode where we explore my favourite local woodland, wild camp and look beyond the aesthetic. Lucy shares her knowledge and love for all things nature which is not only inspiring but has galvanised my own belief that a deeper understanding can inform our creative choices, helps us to see more, appreciate the smallest of details, and make moments in photography even more special. Apart from anything else, this was great fun!
#Woodland #WildCamping #PhotographyPhotographing Woodland in Summer - Advice and InspirationSimon Baxter2021-06-13 | It's that time of year when spring is almost at an end and some photographer's start to shy away from woodland as the vibrant green cloak of summer begins to engulf the overstory and understory. Personally, I very much enjoy June and the feelings of vitality and softness it brings. Historically, I favoured the wet and murky days of summer but I'm spending a lot more time embracing the warming sunlight, clear dry days, and the challenges they may bring. After over a week out of action, this was a great evening wander in my project oak woodland. Good exercise, beautiful surrounding, fun times for Meg, successful compositions and new potential discovered. When woodland photography is your passion, it's very much an all the year round pursuit. I hope you enjoy this episode and find some value in the discussions around composition and light.

#Ancient #WoodlandPhotography #HistoryHow I Prepare for Photography in SpringSimon Baxter2021-04-11 | I've been itching for the spring flowers to bloom and the woodlands to be alive with birdsong, so I thought I'd make a quick video talking about how I prepare for spring woodland photography. Looking back at some of last year's scouting work, I remind myself of the compositions I'd like to work on, and use some mapping tools to help plan this year's work. I've always been an advocate of this long-term view of creating meaningful photographs of my local woodlands, but being fluid and instinctive always plays an important role too.

#Spring #LandscapePhotography #WoodlandPhotographyPhotographing Woodland Waterfalls - Advice & ScoutingSimon Baxter2021-03-21 | In my previous episode I mentioned that I wanted to scout the beck (stream) which tumbles down a rock valley below the ancient oak trees of this wonderful woodland. Yesterday I spent a few hours getting to know the beck a little more - making 1 or 2 waterfall images I like and also trying out some compositions to return to. Another very enjoyable and valuable trip for my long-term ancient woodland photography project.

#WoodlandPhotography #Composition #DiscoverWhy a Photography Project is ImportantSimon Baxter2021-02-27 | I've just realised that it's been almost 4 years since I first visited this woodland and then I left it alone until December 2020. I must have been mad to leave it for so long! In reality, I'm fortunate to have rediscovered this place at just the right time - a time that I'm in a better position to do it justice and at a time that I need a challenging woodland photography project to dig my teeth into. Here's some of my current thoughts on the importance of projects, but it will be interesting to see how things develop over the coming months and years. With the right approach, I believe that a project could improve many aspects of your photography, including enjoyment, creative fulfilment, personal expression, and as a means of finding your own voice.

#WoodlandPhotography #Scouting #WinterHow I make Photos with MeaningSimon Baxter2021-01-24 | An introduction to how I use my knowledge of place and subject can help guide visual intent and improve my photography. Whether it's woodland photography or some of other form of landscape photography, an understanding of both location and subject can help us create more meaningful photographs with an empathetic approach.

#WoodlandPhotography #Meaningful #LandscapePhotographyWinter Photography in a Private Ancient WoodlandSimon Baxter2021-01-10 | The first snowfall of the winter and I decided to have a brief wander in a private woodland of ancient oak trees - some of which will be around 700 years old. The flat grey light and limited time made things a little challenging but that's always part of the fun and I learnt a lot about the location that will help me on future visits. I'm very fortunate to have access to this woodland for my photography, which is something that I also talk about in this episode. Expect future videos from this location as I'm sure it has some delights to offer. I've also included a quick preview of some photos I made during my first ever visit to another local woodland recently. Despite my lack of knowledge of the area, it was a productive afternoon in conditions that were well suited to the location's species and character.

#Winter #Snow #PhotographyWoodland Photography - A Poetic ApproachSimon Baxter2020-12-27 | Much like the concept I introduced to you last year when I talked about the thought process of not looking for trees when photographing woodland - Poetry is a metaphor that I like to use which describes our sensitivity to the expressions of trees and relationships within woodland. In this video I introduce this metaphor and thought process, and how I use it to help facilitate the process of constructing compositions in woodland with meaning, flow and rhythm.

#Photography #Woodland #PoetryThe Photographers Story - THOMAS HEATONSimon Baxter2020-12-13 | In episode 7 of The Photographer's Story, Thomas Heaton shares a story from his Iceland trip and offers an insight into what gets him exciting in the landscape. Photography offers a wonderful and accessible creative outlet for us to express how we see the world and what we care about. It's clear that Tom loves the adventure of the great outdoors and photography has given him the perfect excuse to revel in all that nature has to offer. Tom has done a fantastic job of sharing his stories and vision over the past 6 years - a journey in photography that has inspired thousands.
#LandscapePhotography #ThomasHeaton #PhotographerLandscape Photography - Success with Repeat VisitsSimon Baxter2020-11-29 | I was a little concerned as I wandered around an unfamiliar area of moorland with the sun quickly rising and no composition in mind. I yomped around through the thick heather, looking for something that I could work with under the conditions. It was getting a bit late by the time I found a fabulous tree but what a find it was. I'm getting to know the tree quite well now and I'm determined to make a wintry photograph that showcases it in all its delicate and cascading glory. When limited to your local landscape for photography, a healthy dose of determination makes a big difference. I think my results improved with each visit and my interpretation of the tree changed with the conditions and as I familiarised myself the details of the tree.

#LandscapePhotography #Success #RepeatThe Joys & Hazards of PhotographySimon Baxter2020-11-22 | As much I loved my woodland photography under a blue sky last week, you just can't beat a tranquil late autumn local woodland in the mist and fog. My videos are predominantly filmed in nearby woodlands as it's what I've been passionate about for years. I first found this particular oak wood over 3.5 years ago and I don't think I'll ever tire of spending time here - I learn something about the landscape, the seasons, and the subjects with every single visit.
The fog didn't hang around for long but it was fun while it lasted. Meg had the time of her life and I struggled to stay upright :)
