Linguistic Meditations in Nature Alexander Arguelles 2023-05-28 | In this video, I describe a technique of linguistic meditation that helps you develop the habit of thinking directly in a foreign language. Detailed steps are in the description. Give it a try! The steps:1. Find a place where you can spend some time studying outside in fresh air.2. Finish your studies by reading aloud.3. Stop and consciously try to feel and hear the words you just read resonating and reverberating in your head. 4. Set an intention not to turn your mind to other things, but to just hear and recall these words and others you have read for a few minutes. 5. Try taking a deep breath first and keeping your mind attuned to the sounds as long as you can hold the air.6. You can do this even at a relatively early stage; when you advance to the point when you can start to think new sentences as well as recall the ones you have read, you need to add another conscious intentional step:7. Turn off both the impulse to panic and the instinct to translate in your head - when you come to a word or concept you don't know yet, just skip over it, leave it blank, and keep your mind calmly thinking in the target language.8. You might only be able to do this for a matter of seconds at first, but as you practice the technique and get better in the language, you will be able to do this for longer and longer.9. The chief benefit of this is developing the ability to think directly in your foreign language. The Worlds Largest Language Library: 155 Languages Alexander Arguelles 2022-12-31 | Over the years, I have collected materials for the study of over 150 different languages. It has always been my desire to make this resource center available to others. By showing it now, I hope to make people aware of the existence of rare materials and to offer to share them with students in my academy. The Nature Method for Learning Foreign Languages - What is it & Why isnt it Better Known? Alexander Arguelles 2022-08-21 | The natural or direct method for teaching a foreign language uses only that language itself, with no explanations in a teaching language. New words are explained by those already learned and by pictures. Join methodological discussions at alexanderarguelles.com/academyThe natural or direct method was popular for teaching French, German, Spanish, and Latin from about 1890 - 1920. It formed the core of Berlitz materials at that time, and was a major influence on the development of the Linguaphone courses. In the 1950's, it was revived by the Nature Method Institute in Copenhagen, which first published Hans Ørberg's Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, as well as parallel format methods for English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Danish. While Ørberg's books are still in print, all of the others have long been hard to find. Thanks to the Internet Archive, increasing numbers of these are freely available in digital form. And now thanks to Ayan Academy, they are also being made available again in handsome hard copies as well. Ayan Academy is actively engaged in updating this material, expanding the range of languages to include Turkish and Czech, and providing free audio material for all of these on its YouTube channel. Great Books of the West: Herodotus - Inspectional Overview/Review of The Histories/Investigations Alexander Arguelles 2022-07-31 | In this video, I provide a synopsis of all nine books of The Histories or Investigations of Herodotus of Halicarnassus. Herodotus is a core component of the University of Chicago / Encyclopedia Britannica collection of the Great Books of the Western World, of which Mortimer Adler was the chief editor. Adler was also the author of How to Read a Book, which outlines strategies for how to read challenging works that are meant to instruct the mind and not just to entertain or inform. Among his principles is the idea of "inspectional" reading, which involves getting a solid overview of a book's contents, then reading and discussing it slowly and systematically a first time. It is my hope that this video can serve to help those who have read it already to review and revise it from time to time, as well as encourage others to embark upon this project of continuing lifelong learning. Thoughts on Adding a Spiritual Component to Language Studies Alexander Arguelles 2022-07-24 | Language Learning is obviously an intellectual task and thus a form of mental exercise, but if we can add supplementary physical and/or spiritual components to the endeavor, we can make it a more holistic enterprise that is more likely to endure the dark night of intermediate plateaus. How to Take Notes for Great Books Reading Projects Alexander Arguelles 2022-07-17 | To get the most out of a close reading project such as going through the Great Books of the West and/or the Sacred Books of the East, you need to take and keep good notes.
