Cool! See Your Hands in VR Using a Leap Motion Controller
If you have tried Virtual Reality, you already know that you can't see your hands. With the Leap Motion Controller you get an entirely new and different immersive experience. The Leap Motion Controller is a small dongle device that you attach to the front of your Virtual Reality headsets. The dongle connects to your PC via an extended USB cable that is provided by Leap Motion. After installing the software on your PC, you then use the dongle to scan your hand motions so that it fully recognises the position and rotation of your hands. Once its up and running, it is really a lot of fun to play around with.
So how does it work?
The Leap Motion Controller is designed to provide a high level of precision and control such as pinching and gesturing to control objects in VR. The dongle works using a combination of LED and IR light to capture 200 frames per second of reflected spatial data. This spatial data effectively recognises the motion and movements of your hands so that you can grasp, throw and touch things in VR. The only drawback is that you can not feel anything.
Using Gravity with the Leap Motion Controller and more
One of the really cool apps that you can download and try is called gravity. The idea is that you are in a space station of some sort and can try out a variety of experiences in different rooms. In one room, you can catch and throw a variety of objects which is both fun and really challenging. Once you get good at it, you can then move to a much more challenging room where there are objects that have some sort of propulsion or thrust. Your goal is to learn how to control these objects to get them to hit a larger objects. It sounds easy but honestly its fairly challenging and really entertaining at the same time.
The great thing is that Leap Motion also has a Software Development Kit so that you can develop a wide variety of appliations to create whatever you can imagine. You could play music, fly through the air, or could probably even create a VR app to teach you slight of hand to do magic! Why not?
Overall we are really impressed with the Leap Motion Controller and the entire experience of using your hands to be controllers in Virtual Reality. Its great being able to use your hands for a large variety of tasks without having to memorise a bunch of buttons on a controller. Its definitely a much more natural experience that we hope and believe will be the future of interactive and immersive VR.

Everysight have recently announced the release of their Raptor Augmented Reality sunglasses for cyclists and triathletes. The Everysight AR Sunglasses are designed to provide a high end display on the lens of the sunglasses which are both non-disruptive and provide a wealth of data. Their aim is to help cyclists boost their performance by providing training and health vitals data as well as to track performance.
The Raptor sunglasses provide a display which is both high resolution and are displayed in sight so that the user does not have to look around or elsewhere. They are designed using a patent technology called BEAM which is a patent for visual transparent display. The information is projected onto the lens so that the user is not distracted by having to focus elsewhere.

The displays provide a variety of useful information to help during the training process. First off they provide your vitals such as heart rate so that you are able to monitor yourself. Once the data is captured, you can also store your data such as heart rate, cadence, speed and power to your smartphone and even to other cycling health apps to track your personal progress.
They also provide navigation information such as time and distance to destination in order to help motivate you to achieve or beat your goals. This is highly beneficial so that the user does not have to look down at a watch or other monitors while cycling. Essentially increasing their safety whilst boosting performance becomes the key benefits to Everysight AR Sunglasses. Many other glasses on the market have a variety of issues associated with distractions or obstructions in the view which Everysight have resolved through their unique display and system.
To add to this, the cyclist can also control the Raptor Smartglasses by way of either voice command or directly on the handlebar as well as by way of a touch pad located on the smartglasses. This means they can control a whole variety of functions from volume and brightness to communications, video controls and even the maps. In addition, they also have a have a built in camera so you can record and analyse your ride. For those riders who are also YouTubers or on Vimeo, you can always post and share your videos as well as to other social platforms.

Its not everyday you think about putting on something that makes you look like a robot! When it comes to haptics and being able to experience touch in VR, there are only a few products on the market. One that really stands out is the Dexmo Exoskeleton from Dexta Robotics. These gloves act more like an extension of real life by the way the provide you feedback within your hands.
What makes the Dexmo Exoskelton haptic gloves really unique is that they provide you four core functions. First off, they are wireless. With so many VR products requiring wires and cables, this is a really nice feature so that your hands can work freely without constraints. Second, they are light weight. While these monster exoskeletons look pretty robotic and somewhat big, they are actually very light.
Next, they have built in motion capture and motion sensing into the product. What does that mean? Well, if you ever think about being in Virtual Reality, the first thing you realise is that you can't see your hands. So with motion capture, a set of hands are displayed within VR. As you move and wave your hands around or pick up objects, your hands in VR react exactly as you are moving them in reality.
Finally, and most importantly is that haptic aspect of the Dexmo Exoskeleton gloves. They have a feature called Force Feedback. What this means is that there is pressure being applied to your grip as you pick up a variety of objects. This means that picking up a stone will feel very hard while picking up something soft and squishy will feel that way too. This is probably the biggest single feature that sets the Dexmo apart from other haptic type gloves. The force feedback is using what they call Variable Stiffness. This is where the exoskelton applies very precise motor control to your hand which gives you the ability to distinguish between objects that you hold and touch.
If you are wondering how practical they are then there are a lot of potential uses too. Naturally for gaming, there is plenty of opportunity to create some realistic experiences which include picking up items of all sorts. There could also be a number of experiences to enable you to feel things or hold things as part of a VR experience. Then on the business side there are a lot of potential areas where Dexmo could work well. For training mechanics and engineers there could certainly be value. Military exercises could also have some potential for handling a variety of things from picking up weapons to disposing of bombs and other materials. For the medical industry this could be a great add-on for providers that are doing work in medical training such as Osso VR, featured in a previous video and article.
The conclusion we reach is that while the feeling of hot and cold may not be the primary goal nor feeling the smallest of sensations of touch to the skin, the practical aspects of picking things up is very compelling. We like the idea of where the Dexmo product is going and look forward to seeing where it goes next.

The latest installment from Rocksteady Studios takes us to Gotham in VR. Called Batman: Arkham VR, the mystery game requires you to uncover what has happened to Nightwing and to Robin. Batman PSVR is a recent game addition to the Playstation VR that provides you with about 90 minutes of gameplay.
As Batman, you get to don the cape and cowl and have access to his utility belt. You have access to a grappling hook, forensic scanner and Batarangs. You are presented with high levels of detail where you can explore the Batcave, Iceberg Lounge and even Wayne Manor as well as the dark elements of Gotham City as well. The mission all the while is to uncover what has happened to Batman's friends Nightwing and Robin. You will use your utility belt to search for clues and to navigate within the game to solve the various puzzles and Batman PSVR mystery.
While the previous non-VR versions of the game were more action packed, the Batman PSVR version is more focussed on exploration of the dark underbelly of gotham such as the sewers. The game has woven together a narrative with really good graphics to keep you engaged as you work to solve the game. The essence of Batman PSVR is more focussed on the storytelling and puzzle solving aspects which really demonstrates the power that VR can have on a user experience.
Arkham VR is essentially the first attempt to create a more interactive version of a Batman experience, using the grappling hook to move from place to place. The focus becomes more around the interaction with the objects within the space you are in and less around freely walking around like you find in other VR games. The intricate details, storytelling and puzzles provide for a solid experience as the Black Knight.

Have you ever wanted to just be awesome in a game, and use your own character that is a model of yourself? It sounds crazy but Uraniom have created a unique platform. They provide you the ability to create your own 3D Avatar which you can insert into games and experiences.
The way Uraniom works is that you start by using your smart phone to scan yourself. Naturally this is best done by having a friend (or foe, for game purposes) scan your face and upper body. The scan doesn't take too long but just requires that you sit relatively still so that the camera gets a good clear picture of you from all angles. The scan is done in 360 to cover your front, back sides and top of your head to get the most complete picture.
Once the scan is complete you upload your 3D Avatar photo to the Uraniom platform. There you can modify your 3D Avatar by making a variety of adjustments to the head and face including how your head is positioned on your shoulders and even your eye color and clothes. You select the game or experience you are planning to play and make the adjustments to you so that you have the right attire and look that you want for the game.
Uraniom has a variety of games (sports, warfare and adventure games such as SkyRim) and some experiences already plugged into the games. So once you have completed your creation, you can upload your character into an EA Sports Soccer (Football) match and use your own 3D Avatar to play the game. They have a lot of demonstrations and videos up on their YouTube channel as well that you can check out to see how you can be your badass self in a VR game or experience.
As Uraniom puts it, and we couldn't say it any better ourselves, "Be the hero of your favorite game!" Now that certainly sounds like a lot of fun.

When it comes to using Virtual Reality, one of the biggest challenges or gaps is in touch. The difficulty is to provide the link between what your skin feels in reality and bringing that sensation into Virtual Reality. Skinterface is a young team of students gone entrepreneur who have developed some really interesting haptic technology. Their skin suit is designed specifically with the idea in mind to bring an advanced form of touch into virtual reality.
The challenge for the Skinterface team was to determine how to overcome the current limitations that are seen in virtual reality to bridge the gap between what our skin experiences in reality while we are actually in virtual reality. Having realise this gap the team then set off to research and understand how to transfer the sensations that you should feel in VR into ones that you actually can feel.
Skinterface is an interface material that is designed to give you the most realistic experience possible around haptics and touch in Virtual Reality. They have designed the suit with a matrix of actuators. These actuators are effectively magnetic nodes that are widely distributed to cover the body. Each node individually responds to what you experience in virtual reality in order to provide you the sensations of touch and pressure, sensation and even temperature. As you move your arm for example into a specific field or area, the actuator nodes are designed to activate as they encounter the area in virtual reality that triggers the sensation.
Having developed the working prototypes, Skinterface have made trips to various locations to showcase and wow their audiences. They have been able to successfully demonstrate how their VR skin can actually provide you with a simulated and yet real experience that enables you to take your skin into virtual reality, for lack of a better way of expressing it. Remember back to the days of Atari? Perhaps not, although the origins of Atari games such as Pong may be more familiar. Fast forward to today and we have a new exciting company called Modal VR. Founded by Nolan Bushnell (founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese) and Jason Crawford (the company's technical genius and chief executive).
The idea behind Modal VR is that it is both a hardware and software company. Their portable hardware is designed so that you can set up and run a VR experience in a huge area. The system is designed to support and enable multiple players to interact in a space of around 900,000 square feet (83,600 square meters)! The Modal VR equipment has standing motion sensors, full body sensors and wireless VR Headsets. This gives you the the freedom to move around without cables. The equipment is also designed to be fast so that you don't experience delays in the game or experience (with under 10 milliseconds of latency).
Bushnell and Crawford have decided to build the company aimed more at the corporate and business market aimed more at events and experiences than individual gaming. They see the opportunities in a wide range of areas including gaming, education, training and even eSports. Essentially they are aiming at a variety of markets and and users that can benefit from apps created to solve problems and create solutions.
Modal VR also have plans to create an app store and ecosystem for developers to create and share content. They believe there are wider variety of problems, opportunities and experiences that we can create and are building a platform to fill these needs. So the idea is that developers can actually solve problems that businesses have; and this is in some ways bigger than just making games.
The creation of Mythic Combat, seen in this video, just gives you a sense of the potential for wireless VR equipment. I can imagine the potential for military training could be huge for example.

Mission Control Says SpaceVR Overview 1 to launch June 2017. So who is SpaceVR? They are a startup that first raised funds on Kickstarter to launch a camera satellite into Earth's Orbit. Their goal is to create both virtual tourism and to help raise awareness about the Earth and how we impact it. Since then, they have formed more partnerships and added a variety of experts to their board to help them make their goal a reality.
The Overview 1 satellite will enable us to experience space in Virtual Reality. The aim is for us to experience what is called the Overview Effect. This is the term used by Astronauts to describe the moment they realise or understand their place in "infinite universe by direct observation." By using VR headsets we will be able to have a similar feeling by looking around and seeing both the Earth down below and the stars, Moon and planets around us.
The satellite will consist of a series of 4K cameras which will capture and create a 360 virtual reality experience. Overview 1 will delivered to the International Space Station on the SpaceX CRS-12 mission. Overview 1 will head to the ISS inside one of SpaceX’s Dragon cargo capsules during the CRS-12 resupply mission. The delivery of the payload is in large part to their partnership formed with NanoRocks (they run a commercial laboratory on the International Space Station). Once at the space station, it will then be deployed using the NanoRacks CubeSat Deployer (NRCSD) into a low Earth orbit.
SpaceVR actually started this project back in 2015 when they launched on Kickstarter. Back then they had intended to send a much larger 12-camera rig to the ISS for a full 3D 360 degree experience. However, the initial campaign was short of the $500,000 so they relaunched the campaign with a scaled down project of $100,000 for a 2D experience. After succeeding on their 2nd attempt, they then received an investment of $1.25M which enabled them to move forwards fairly quickly.
With their launch date now fast approaching, SpaceVR can comfortably claim to have the "world's first virtual reality camera satellite."
To access and experience space, they have already started taking pre-orders for their subscription-based service of $35/year. All you will need is a VR headset for the fully immersive experience. Exciting right? I guess you might just want to sit down the first time you are seeing the Earth from orbit. I for one am counting down with Mission Control!

Creating and designing your own 3D content with Sketchfab
If you have ever wanted to create 3D content and share it, there is a very cool platform that is continuing to gain in popularity. Its called Sketchfab. The platform has a huge variety of content that you can explore and look at much like looking at a video platform. Currently they have over half a million creators that have contributed over 1 million 3D models. The platform can be used to publish, share and discover 3D models on your mobile phone and on your PC as well as in Virtual Reality.
Not only can you view content, you can also create content too. Sketchfab provide their own design tools that enable you to create and share your ideas on their open platform. You can create, modify, and innovate all you like with your own 3D ideas and then share them with the world. This is a great way to enable both companies as well as individual designers to share their ideas and concepts.
In fact, if you want to try out any content using a VR headset with your phone, you can get the easy to use instructions from Sketchfab right here. Its just quick click or adding the string at the end of the URL on a model on the site (/embed?cardboard=1) and you are all set to view in 3D in VR.
Integration with social media platforms
Back a few months ago, we went to visit Reality51, a company that creates a variety of content and has their own photogrammetry studio. They created a 360 photo of our CEO, which you can see here on Sketchfab. They use their photos to supply to VR content makers for games or making variety of business solutions.
In fact, Sketchfab have started to integrate with a variety of other social media platforms to enable us to really tap into and experience 360 content. They recently created what they call an "Instamuseum" gallery. The idea is that you can create a gallery of images in Instagram and then view them in your own private gallery. Sketchfab have also plugged into Twitter so that users can browse and share 3D content. They also have integration for 4D experiences with Mimesys, which is one of nearly 30 different file formats that they support. They even have gone further into the VR world by partnering with Valve to enable game developers to put their content on Steam.
What is clear is that they continue to work closely with a variety of social media platforms to enable us to embed and share our 3D models. It is an exciting time to see how 3D content is accelerating and being made so readily available so quickly.
So where does this take us next? If you have ever thought about how you could interact with Holograms this is the first product on the market. Called Volume, it is a Hologram Display that does not require any type of Headset or Visor. The team over at The Looking Glass have designed a high technology volumetric display that enables you to see holographic images which are projected onto a glass cube. Volume is using a patented "lightfolding" technology which works by projecting light onto a glass cube within the structure. They call the concept Volumetric Display.
Volume is designed with an interface called Hypercube that connects to Unity 3D so that content creators can create content. You can use Volume to play games, or to create your own 3D animations or images. It is possible to take memories and to share them onto the display. The Looking Glass Factory also have designed Volume to work with Leap Motion so that you can use your own hand gestures to control and move things as well.
Volume is designed with a very high level of technology to ensure that it is robust and able to provide high resolution displays of content. It has 2 million 3D pixels and 16.7 million colors. This makes the details that are projected extremely high quality. They have also built it with speakers so for anyone playing games or wanting some interaction, sound is already included as part of Volume. The front screen is also a touch screen to increase interactivity with the hologram.
The really cool thing is that you can also 3D print your 3D sketches. For those who are designers, this might be one of the most practical devices out there. You can create your 3D sketches and view them within the cube. Once you are done, you can then send them to 3D print and see the outputs of your design work.

We have a variety of goggles now in the market ranging from 2K-4k, with various examples of motion tracking and control. To enhance the experience there a few companies working on next generation projects in Haptic Technology (Touch). By putting on various items on your body, you are able to feel and experience various sensations when you touch objects in Virtual Reality. One of the companies working on this is Manus VR. In previous articles, we have highlighted some of the related work that we see taking place in gesture controls as well as highlighting the missing element of touch in VR.
Manus VR is one of the first of a handful of companies that are developing Haptic gloves. Based in The Netherlands (Holland), their gloves allow you to feel and experience various sensations in Virtual Reality. This can range from feeling it rain on your hands to the sensation when you grab or squeeze something. In essence they are building a glove that will provide us a realistic experience.
On the technical side, their gloves contain gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers to provide real-time accuracy in VR. Hand movements are tracked using high end sensors providing a realistic experience. The experience integrates a VR controller like from HTC Vive with the gloves. We have begun to witness the first of some really fascinating examples of how Mixed Reality is going to impact our lives. Recently, Microsoft recently showcased how they used HoloLens to build help Japan Airlines (JAL) train their employees on airline engines.
With the introduction of this type of training, Japan Airlines (JAL)is able to train their employees from any location without any need for travel. Employees can put on the goggles anywhere to train and learn about the airline engines work. The system is designed so that employees can learn about the major components. They can also drill down into specific parts to see it separately to learn how it works. They can also learn how components interact to understand how individual components interact with each other.
Learning about components in 3D
Using just your hands, you can freely move the object around in 3D. Part of the learning enables you to move the objects around, to change their size, to rotate them, and to look at individual components. It is even possible to see components that are either hidden or normally very hard to access and reach.
For example, an employee might want to learn about how fuel is filtered and injected into an airline engine. They might also want to understand how the turbines work to generate speed and thrust. The benefits to be able to look at the engine to learn about it from a variety of perspectives makes the whole experience richer and exciting.
Making dangerous training safe and even fun
One of the difficult aspects of working in a manufacturing or engineering environment is the dangers for the employees. However, the ability to work remotely on heavy machinery in mixed reality completely removes all the risks. In fact, Japan Airlines recognised the benefits of training employees while also removing the risks and putting safety issues first. The result is that employees get a much greater insight into the risks and dangers before they ever enter such an environment.
Interestingly, not only is safer, it is also a lot cheaper for companies too. Rather than flying employees to locations, they can work from anywhere they want and at anytime. The idea of being able to play around with dangerous equipment in a safe way and try new things risk free also makes it fun as well.

We have seen a number of Virtual Reality simulations, but none quite like this one so far. We have seen driving, racing, flying and even rowing. ICAROS has built a flying simulation designed as an intense workout that forces you to really use all your muscles. They say that the machine focuses on effectively three aspects: Balance, Reflex, and Concentration. All of these to provide you an intensive exercise routine to strengthen various muscle groups.
Who are ICAROS?
They are a small VR sports simulation equipment maker based in Munich. They have been recognised recently on a variety of events. Awards have included: Reddot 2016 - honourable mention, ISPO Brandnew Overall Winner 2016/2017 and UX Design Awards 2016. They have also been covered by Wired, German site.
So how does it work?
The ICAROS requires you to balance and navigate using your body. You are positioned in a stationary position, put on your virtual reality goggles, and are in an immersive flying environment. All the while, in order to fly you need to shift your body around to sustain various directions and motions in flight.

They have designed the equipment so that you are using a wide variety of the body to sustain flight. The simulation enables you to build strength of various intensities on the chest, shoulders, abs, neck, triceps, lateral abdominal / stomach muscles, quads and calves.
The ICAROS comes with a controller to enable you to control your movements. Everything is wireless to enable you to get connected, workout, and not be tangled in cables or wires. With your smartphone and a pair of VR goggles, you download the app, and then can start your intense workout experience. They have designed the whole experience to be as integrated and seamless as possible. The aim being to focus on the workout and not to worry about getting all the technology to work.
Their flying simulation workout experience enables you to practice so that you can build strength in various core muscle groups. Over time, you will also build strength and get more tone, while you are trying various flying courses.

We see a lot of indoor VR simulation experiences for sports. There are flying machines, being a bird, rowing experiences and various biking and riding experiences. Some of these indoor VR sports simulations are pretty fun, but all have a similar limiting factor. You have to be confined to an indoor experience. RideOn see the world in really cool way and have decided to take a different route.
RideOn have built the first-ever active sports goggles for mixed reality. The goggles provide you a mixed reality experience outdoors and are designed for extreme light conditions. If you imagine comparing this to other Augmented and Mixed Reality products on the market, they all have a common problem: you really need to be indoors or in "normal" light conditions to use them.
The product inspiration came from their background in flying planes in the military and using various forms of Augmented Reality. The founder, Alon Getz, who is an avid skier and loves sports, realised the potential and set out to develop the RideOn products.
The First Mixed Reality Ski Goggles with Tons of Features
Having completed a successful round of funding on Indiegogo, the team at RideOn have been working round-the-clock to get their first product, a Mixed Realty Ski Goggle, out onto the market. The goggles are built with an onboard computer with 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor and an ARM Cortex 9. In addition, goggles come with an onboard camera that can record up to 3 hours of footage. They also have built-in bluetooth so that you can be connected to the internet with your phone. Controls within the goggles are managed using your eyes which is both practical and very cool as well.
What makes these goggles so interesting is that you can create a slalom or obstacle course experience while skiing. You select the course and then find a series of rings appearing in front of you in the snow. You are then timed and measured for your accuracy as you ski through the rings. In addition, you can coordinate with your friends to meet them and maintain contact while skiing or snowboarding. If you have been skiing, you probably know how annoying it is to pull off your gloves and dig out your phone to find out where your friends are. With the RideOn goggles, you can avoid much of this hassel by contacting them straight through the goggles without having to use your hands.
The Sports Market Remains Completely Untapped
Going beyond skiing and snowboarding, market research shows that the Augmented and Mixed Reality market is really in its infancy. Analysts in the industry have speculated that it could reach $20B by 2020. And within that there is a huge market for a variety of sports and uses such as motorbike helmets, bicycle glasses, sky diving goggles to even displays for boating and flying.
So is this Just the Ultimate Gadget or is it Practical?
The potential uses for making sports more engaging, fun and social certainly is more than appealing. Its both practical and also can enhance our entire sporting experience. There is also the potential that with more information available you can make better decisions and even train better or harder. Imagine having your heart rate on display while you are running or having information available to help you optimise your workout. All of this is possible and certainly part of the RideOn mission.

The challenge with Virtual Reality is that we are limited to sitting or restricted to small movements. Primarily because we can't see where we are going and also due to being tethered to cables. Virtuix Omni have come up with a clever solution to the VR.
The Virtuix Omni is a unique multi-directional rig that enables you to be active in Virtual Reality. The support ring rig is designed with a concave low-friction base for walking. You put on their special shoes with sensors and low friction, and off you go. The design enables you have to have full 360 degree freedom of movement. At the same time you can control your actions of an avatar in a VR game without any form of constraints.
How the walking and running experience is made so real
There are a few key aspects that make the walking and running experience so effective. First, the Omni uses a concave, low-friction walking base. This provides you with a smooth and immersive experience for walking and running. A concave surface allows the user’s foot to slide back by gravity after each step, whereas a flat surface would require the user to physically move their feet backwards with their own force – which is strenuous and not part of a natural stride. According to Virtuix "A concave platform results in the most natural and smooth walking and running motion. The concave and soft surface of the Omni also reduces any impact on the joints from walking or running."
Second, the Omni accessory shoes are a low-friction sole to enable free movement. The shoes also have Virtuix Omni Tracking Pods which provide tracking of foot movement. The combination provides a smooth 360 degree movement while also providing an integrated experience for VR gameplay.
Be un-tehered with the Support Ring
Rather than being connected to any cables, the Virtuix Omni provides you with a fully un-tethered experience. Although they say this is to keep costs down, its actually a lot better for the user experience too. They have designed the ring with safety bars to maximise safety whilst making it possible to move freely too. Effectively it is designed to prevent a person slipping and falling. The simple and clever design also means that assembly is easy, and getting in and out of the rig takes only a moment.
The freedom of movement is a huge bonus as it gives you both maximum versatility as well as freedom to move around in all directions, up, down sidesway, jumping etc. Effectively you can run, turn, stop and crouch in 360 degrees without any restraints or cables.
So how do you connect your VR Goggles?
Here is the part that makes the Virtuix Omni even more exciting. Wireless! Using a Bluetooth connection, you can connect to your PC or Smartphone (with goggles like a Samsung Gear VR or other). The great part is that you can also use SteamVR or Oculus Rift games as well. Naturally first-person perspective games are the best way to get the immersive experience. You can walk or move around in an environment as if you are really there for a fully immersive experience. So whether you want to use YouTube or some of the cool games in the market, there really isn't any particular limit to what you can try out. Essentially you need to supply your own goggles to play. The Omni comes with integrated tracking hardware and software to recognize movements and translate them to steer an avatar in the virtual environment.

Lockheed Martin asked Framestore to design a system that could render Mars in real time and account for real environment factors. They wanted to put school kids on a bus and make it feel like they were driving on Mars. As part of the Lockheed Martin Generation Beyond Initiative they asked Framestore to create an immersive experience for children. The project was to create a virtual field trip for a group of children to go to Mars. The goal was create an immersive experience for children to drive on Mars, to inspire future generations of children in technology. Framestore decided to use the Unreal Engine to develop the experience.
The idea was to provide an experience where sight, sound, and motion could all be experienced in a real environment. The aim was to give a new perspective in what a Virtual Reality experience could be. This meant that when the bus turned, the children felt the bus turning and saw them turning on the surface of Mars. When they hit a bump in the road, the display looked as though they bumped on something on Mars. They also built a sound experience so that it sounded like they were driving in a wind storm on the Martian surface.
Technology
Screens: The screens were made using 4K display and a layer of film. They were designed to account for what you are feeling inside the bus. Bumps and turns felt on the bus meant seeing the same on Mars. The challenge was to make transparent high definition VR windows as displays (without using goggles).
Driving area and mapping: They created a drivable area of 250 Square Miles in Mars using Unreal Engine. They created a map of Mars that matched the physical map of the roads. As the bus turns, the corresponding turns on Mars look natural to the children on the bus.
Technology: They used a variety of technology included GPS, accelerometers, magnetometer and velocimeters. The combination of these were used for tracking the bus location, recognising the speed so that it could be matched on the drive, and ensuring that the overall experience could be heightened through realistic integration of the real world with drive on Mars.
The result: An amazing experience to inspire the children with the aim of capturing their imagination and getting them interested in future roles in technology. What the kids see and experience is the surface of Mars fully immersive without any goggles. What they feel is what they see and experience. They were provided a fully immersive "4D" experience, whether it was the movement of air in the bus, the sensation of turning or bumping, or the sounds of the windstorm on the surface of Mars.
What Next?
Was this just a simple Lockheed Martin stunt or experiment, or should we expect this to be the just the beginning? It would seem that having proven the possibilities we could expect to see more. What about a self-driving car experience where you can see whatever you want? Or how about replacing airplane windows with new experiences to watch during a long flight? Or perhaps something we see when we take our next underground, metro, tube or subway?
Needless to say, what Lockheed Martin created was both an incredible proof of concept and a inspiration for our future generations. Lets hope we see more of this for our children to keep them inspired to do more.

Have you ever wondered how you could really experience motion and acceleration in Virtual Reality?
Its called the Cable Robot. While the mainstream continues to develop goggles and learns how to film in VR, a small group in Germany decided to go a big step further. The Max Planck Institut for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany built the ultimate and possibly best VR Simulator experience.
Designed for Precision
It is a programmable experience designed to move in all 6 directions for a fully immersive 360 degree motion simulator experience. The Cable Robot was designed with a carbon fibre frame weighing just 80Kg. It is suspended by 8 cables which can each take up to 1.4 tons of tension. Imagine that kind of tension being applied to shifting you around in the cage!
Accelerating at the speed of a Bugatti Veyron from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.4 s
The simulator can accelerate up to 1.5G (G-Force). That would be equivalent to driving the Bugatti Veyron and pushing it to 100 kilometers per hour in just 2.3 seconds! And the power usage is 348 kilowatts of power. How much is that? Well think about running 1 washing machine or dryer for about a year non-stop! So while the power is rather high, the experience might just make up for it.
The Thrill of a Cable Robot
The outcome of course is a simulated experience from the Cable Robot which is both more realistic and certainly more thrilling as well. It can be programmed to simulate a variety of different scenarios in Virtual Reality. It is designed to be a wireless system with its own onboard Virtual Reality system. In addition there is a head mounted display with optical tracking. These features both provide the user with the realistic experience as well as to help to reduce motion sickness.

This device, only available during conventions and not for sale, takes the virtual reality to a whole new level by allowing players to enjoy South Park: The Fractured But Whole in the most immersive way possible. A new perception through a sense that has never been tickled in gaming before: the sense of smell. To smell what exactly? Farts, obviously.
As in South Park™: The Stick Of Truth™, farts will be again the most powerful weapon players will be able to handle in its direct sequel, South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Through a specifically produced technology, the Nosulus Rift odor virtual reality mask will deliver the right smell each time the player makes use of his nefarious powers.
Developed by Productman, the Buzzman entity dedicated to the creation of products or services, with the assistance of various experts, including the famous French perfume specialist Isabelle Ferrand, the Nosulus Rift is a fully functional mask using sensors activated through inaudible soundwaves in the in-game fart sound. Each time the sensors are activated, they trigger the odor’s puff. Meticulously and without mercy.

If you ever wondered how practical Walking in Virtual Reality would be here is a solution. A team in Japan have been researching how we interpret space and movement. What they have discovered is that we are unable to perceive walking in a small curve or angle. They call this Redirected Walking.
They devised a rig as seen in the video where people are asked to walk along corridors which they referred to as Unlimited Corridors. As the person is walking, the use one hand to feel along a wall. However the wall is actually bent so that the person is walking in a circle.
What Redirected Walking means is that we are able to trick the mind into thinking that we are walking in a straight line when in fact we are walking in a circle. They demonstration does require a fairly large space to make this work. The research in to how to make walking in Virtual Reality demonstrates huge potential.
Imagine walking through a potential home that you want to buy, playing a game, or walking through a foreign city. All of these are possible using the concept of Redirected Walking and applying it.
While we see that this research is the first step in understanding perception in Virtual Reality, it opens up huge potential. Until now movement has been fairly restricted. There will certainly be more types of applications once we begin to see walking in virtual reality become available more widely.

Microsoft HoloLens is a Mixed Reality goggle that enables you to interact with holograms in your own reality. The lenses are essentially a self-contained computer designed to present holographic images. They overlaying holograms on top of your existing real-world view. The holograms are displayed in a high definition format so they become part of your real world.
Imagine a world where you can create, connect and explore holograms together. As fascinating as this sounds, Mixed Reality technologies are on the cusp of shifting into our everyday lives. Microsoft HoloLens is one of the first goggles and holographic computers providing Mixed Reality. Their technology is designed to provide us with a way to both overlay our reality with holograms as well as to interact with them.
As shown in the video, a Mixed Reality is created by blending holographic imagery into our real world environment. You can see and interact with both the digital content and your real world at the same time.
Bringing Holographic Technology to Businesses
On the commercial side, Microsoft recently launched their latest business program to help companies to deploy and use the HoloLens in a commercial setting.
For example an architect can transform his working environment to accelerate how he designs a building. He is able to view aspects of his designs in a 3D model months in advance. Normally designers are constrained by a 2D model. They are not able to experience 3D until much later in the design process. Through the use of Microsoft HoloLens for commercial uses, companies can now look at ways to bring 3D modelling and to view these models as if they were real. This will enable companies to dramatically change how they can design and dynamically interact with their designs. Designers will be able to see details they were unable to previously see; they will be able to interact with designs to verify, redesign, and modify them by interacting with holographic images.

VR Plus Virtual Reality cafe experience center Seoul, South Korean Virtual Reality
Welcome to Korea's first virtual reality experience center and cafe. Located in Gangnam Station, Exit 1 in the Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul, VR Plus has created the first place VR cafe and experience center with a range of experiences from sports to games. Everything has been designed to be as realistic as possible through the content and equipment.
The cafe is divided into two zones, the cafe and the VR experiences. Within the VR experiences, they have set up several zones which have HTC Vive and Oculus Rift Experiences. There area a variety of arcade style experiences to give you a range of things to try.
The VR Experience Zones
Within the zones there are a variety of experiences including fighting zombies, playing Star Wars, driving race cars and riding a roller coaster along with a variety of rich VR content. In the HTC experience zone, they have put in shooting games and even a Star Wars experience.
Want to ride a rollercoaster? Forget about watching a rollercoaster in VR and don't worry about heading to an amusement part. VR Plus wanted you to feel and experience the rollercoaster experience as much as possible. So their experience comes equipped with a fully operating machine that moves you around and comes with wind effects as well.
And if you want to try other equipment, they have that too. Their cafe also has Samsung Gear VR, and LG Electronics, including 'VR 360' Mobile VR.
So What's next for VR Plus? VR Plus plan to open an additional 8 experience center cafes. Kim, Jae - Hyun VR Plus Director has indicated plans to promote future store openings overseas through the franchise program. So if you fancy the idea of opening your own cafe and VR center... Native eye-tracking might be the next big thing in VR. Fove VR are going beyond the mainstream VR headset players like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. They are the world's first VR headset that provides eye tracking. Through the goggles, you are able to react and control experiences within a game or app simply through the use of your eyes.
Fove VR have built their VR Headset with sensors that track the eyes by scanning your pupils. Effectively, through eye tracking, the goggles know where you look, and therefore the game or apps knows as well. The eye control may also mean that interacting with characters in a game may be more life-like.

The ability to aim with your eyes means that you can control more using your eyes just by where you look. Focus is also more realistic. Unlike other games and apps, being able to make eye contact isn't very natural. With Fove VR, the experience of interacting with other characters such as eye contact and reacting to each other will be much more realistic. Through Fove VR, characters can react when you make eye contact with them. Through the recognition of micro-expressions from the eyes, a glance, a squint or a blink may all be used to convey an emotional response to a character. The character will then be able to respond back to you and behave in a more natural way.
Finally, one of the critical benefits of having eye tracking capability is the ability to reduce motion sickness. By having a more natural feeling by using your eyes you will reduce head movements to look around which will reduce the motion sickness feeling.
Within the video, there is also a demonstration where a child learns to play the piano controlled by the Fove VR headset. The project called "Eye Play the Piano" was a collaboration to demonstrate the power of eye tracking to control a musical instrument for a child that has special needs.
With Fove VR, you can use your eyes to aim, to focus, make eye contact and move more naturally. And while their product is still in development, Fove VR have what looks to be the most ground breaking product in the VR Headset market.

I never imagined that a company like Holodia would come along to bring us Holofit for an immersive indoor Virtual Reality sporting experience.
For many, going to the gym is often times seen as more of a must-do or chore, and less for the fun. I have often imagined being able to have a realistic sporting experience whilst doing an indoor sport such as riding a bicycle, jogging or rowing. I remember seeing on television a person putting a big screen in front of a stationary bike and having a projection of riding somewhere. I used to think "that's cool, but not really realistic or motivating." And I have often wondered if there would ever be something so immersive that I would really enjoy the entire indoor sporting experience, rather than be bored doing it.
Let's be honest, staring at walls or watching the clock waiting to finish a workout isn't very enjoyable. And from a sporting perspective, it sub-optimal for performance as well. The best exercise is really achieved when you push yourself to new limits or when you really pace yourself at a level that enables you to achieve greater improvements.

And looking outside of the ship will also have an equal amount of detail and showcase the sheer size and magnitude of flying up to a Star Destroyer or their full fleet.

This video trailer demonstrates how powerful Mixed Reality will be. ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm and Magic Leap teamed up to experiment and to provide some very powerful and exciting content. The Star Wars experience they have shared with us allows us to both see some of what ILMxLAB, Magic Leap and Lucasfilm's teams have created.
ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm and Magic Leap teamed up to create an immersive experience that goes beyond Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. They are seeking to both understand the challenges associated with creating such an experience as well as to evolve the real possibilities of how we can interact with Star Wars in a variety of immersive ways.
Their interactive labs were designed to enabled designers and engineers to interact and experience the Star Wars characters and experiences they are creating; the goal is to be able to understand how to design these experiences from the ground up.
We have seen previous VR experiences being created by EA Games, ILMxLAB, and Lucasfilm such as in this video.
The process that Lucasfilm, ILMxLAB and Magic Leap are going through is to enable them to understand how to bring the Star Wars experience to our homes in our reality through a mixed reality.
And thinking beyond the creation of the experience, the real aim of any such endevour is to create an entirely new way to interact with Star Wars characters and events as they unfold.
Their recording process is not limited to just computer animation and generation. They have also used real people in a live-modelling process to then place them into a Star Wars Mixed Reality environment that others can interact with or see. This is part of a recording and experimentation process to build a future model for creating games or experiences in the future.
The creation process and content that they have achieved is an incredible result in the Star Wars universe; and we could experience some of these immersive experience ourselves in the future using Mixed Reality from Magic Leap.

Have you ever imagined or been curious about playing the hologram chess game in Star Wars? Well thanks to some very creative minds and the original creator of the Star Wars figures, it's now closer to becoming a reality. The original designer of the holo chess pieces, Phil Tippet, is now bringing this game to life.
Hologrid Monster Battle is coming and is in development. The collaboration is between Tippet Studios and Happy Giant. They are aiming to create around 30 monster characters with all sorts of powers and abilities. They refer to Hologrid Monster Battle as a a hybrid board game; you use cards from a deck and these cards are then scanned as you play them to appear on the chess board in 3D. The game is a turn-based game much like chess or like the original Star Wars game. The goal of the game is to defeat your opponents champion while using spells and combat to progress towards that goal.
The game promises to have a lot of interesting monster characters to play with. It will support using a mobile phone or tablet to overlay the game experience on top of your existing reality so that your 2D playing cards come to life in a 3D augmented reality experience.
But despite being able to play them on your kitchen table, don't expect the monsters to do any of the cleaning for you anytime soon! They will probably leave enough of a mess behind from their own battle.

Meet Osso VR. They are creating an immersive surgical simulator designed to train surgeons.
Their focus is VR and surgical training with initial focus on orthopedic devices. And the objective is to provide virtual reality "how to" training to doctors.
Osso VR is using virtual reality to revolutionize the way surgeons are trained to show them how to use surgical devices and implants with a low-cost, fully immersive surgical VR simulator. The solution, designed by a team of physicians and developers, uses an off-the-shelf VR headset and hand-tracking technology.
OssoVR's founder, Justin Barad, is a doctor himself and comes from the industry. His team are a mix of developers and doctors who have come together to build a VR surgical simulator.
And no this isn't some some of alien simulator or game although you can find many alien simulators out there for surgical purposes.
This is really an application designed to enable doctors to get the best possible training before they operate on people rather than learning on them.

While the video shows some simple illustrations, children will someday be able to play with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Minnie and many of the other Disney characters using technology such as this.
The potential for a child to take colour and draw with a character like Mickey Mouse or Elsa or Anna from Frozen and convert them into 3D characters that can move around.
The benefits of such technology will enable kids to play with what they have colored and drawn; this kind of experience will enhance learning and stimulate a childs imagination and all of this achieved through a form of augmented reality.
Disney how to draw in Augmented Reality for kids - innovated by Disney Research labs. This was a recent project done to convert 2D into 3D images to build an immersive experience. In this video, the project focussed on children and kids coloring books to convert the images shown on the paper into 3D experiences in a tablet.
Disney Research labs believes that providing this kind of interaction for kids will help to stimulate their minds, their imagination and their ability to work within a more rich immersive environment.
