The Mycenaean Citadel of Tiryns in Greece History with Cy 2024-03-28 | Tiryns is an ancient archaeological site located in the northeastern Peloponnese of Greece, near the modern city of Nafplio. Though occupied for several thousands of years beforehand, Tiryns reached its height between 1400-1200 BC when a great Mycenaean citadel commanded the surrounding countryside from its acropolis. The citadel’s Cyclopean walls, which reach heights of 13 meters in some places, are a testament to the skill of Mycenaean engineers and their mastery of monumental construction. Takht-e Sulayman / Sasanian Temple of Adur Gushnasp History with Cy 2024-03-13 | Takht-e Solayman is a UNESCO World Heritage site located today in the West Azerbaijan province of Iran. Though occupied at least since Achaemenid times, the site was most important during the Sasanian period from 3rd to 7th centuries AD when it hosted the Zoroastrian temple of Adur Gushnasp, which was one of the three most sacred fire temples within the Sasanian Empire.The site was considered to have been sacred for over millennia before that due to a thermal spring lake at its center. Exploring the Royal Necropolis of Naqsh-e Rustam (Achaemenid Tombs / Sasanian Reliefs) History with Cy 2023-05-08 | A few months ago I got to explore the ruins of the royal necropolis known today as Naqsh-e Rustam. It's here that the four Achaemenid king Darius I (a.k.a. Darius the Great), Xerxes I, Artaxerxes I and Darius II were laid to rest. The site was so special that several Sasanian kings added their own reliefs and inscriptions there, including on the mysterious building known as Ka'bah-e Zardusht.
