The Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo, together with a system change company Systemiq, proposed pathways for the global chemical industry to reach scope 1-3 net zero while staying within the Planetary Boundaries. We also proposed new roles the chemical industry should take on. A seminar and a discussion with global leaders held at the Japan Pavilion of COP27 in November 2022 is presented.

3rd Strategic Partnership Symposium -Future prospects for international cooperation

東京大学 / The University of Tokyo 2024-03-06 | The Strategic Partnership Symposium 2023 was held online on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

The University of Tokyo proposed “Building a Network of ‘Strategic Partnerships’ to Strengthen International Competitiveness among Japanese Universities” as a project for MEXT’s Japan Forum for Internationalization of Universities project and plans to widely disseminate information by sharing the challenges and good practices with other universities through the enhancement of horizontal cooperations. Through this project, the universities involved plan to enhance the recognition of Strategic Partnerships among Japanese universities and the international presence of Japanese universities.

This 3rd Strategic Symposium, which was held in the final year of the MEXT’s Top Global University Japan Project, provided an opportunity to contemplate on the prospects for international cooperation of Japanese universities with overseas universities, based on the discussions on the strategic partnership projects that have been generated so far in the three years of the project's activities.

Challenges and Recommendations for Japan’s Net Zero by 2050 ― Energy System Perspective ―

東京大学 / The University of Tokyo 2024-02-05 | ETI-CGC (Energy Transition Initiative – Center for Global Commons), launched by Japanese leading companies and the University of Tokyo’s Center for Global Commons, has been studying Japan’s energy transition pathway toward 2050. At the Japan Pavilion in COP28, ETI-CGC organized an event to present an interim report on the research for Japan's Net Zero scenario in 2050 and discussed the challenges in the decarbonization scenarios.

In the first half of the event, CGC presented scenarios for achieving decarbonization in Japan's energy system. The presentation highlighted challenges and hypotheses of solutions in transitioning strategies such as introducing renewable energy sources, shifting from fossil fuels to CO2-free fuels like hydrogen and ammonia, and developing international resource supply chain networks, among other critical issues. The latter half of the event held a panel discussion on ideas for problem-solving, Japan's position in the global context, and its potential contributions to global climate change issues with a diverse range of panelists, including global climate change experts, ETI-CGC members, and a UTokyo student and professors.

[H-UTokyo Lab.] Introduction to Urban Well-being for Mega City

H-UTokyo Lab. has been promoting the “Habitat Innovation Project” to realize Society 5.0, a super smart society. New Roles of the Global Chemical Industry toward Carbon Neutrality by 2050

東京大学 / The University of Tokyo 2023-05-22 | Of all the hard-to-abate industries, the chemical industry is considered particularly difficult to decarbonize because carbon is often embedded in its extremely diverse products. The Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo, together with a system change company Systemiq, proposed pathways for the global chemical industry to reach scope 1-3 net zero while staying within the Planetary Boundaries. We also proposed new roles the chemical industry should take on. A seminar and a discussion with global leaders held at the Japan Pavilion of COP27 in November 2022 is presented.

世界の化学産業の2050年カーボンニュートラル実現とその新たな役割

東京大学 / The University of Tokyo 2023-05-22 | GHG削減が困難な産業（hard-to-abate産業）の中でも化学産業は特に脱炭素化が難しいとされています。加えて、脱炭素化はプラネタリ・バウンダリーズ（生物多様性、窒素・リンの流出防止等）を重視しながら実現する必要があります。このような制約の中で、世界の化学産業を脱炭素化 (scope 1～3) するための道筋、およびその中での化学産業の新たな役割に関して、2022年11月にCOP27のジャパン・パビリオンにてセミナー、およびグローバル・リーダーとのディスカッションを行いました。なお、本セミナーは東京大学のグローバル・コモンズ・センターがSystemiq社とともに実施した研究に基づいております。

Meet Koji Okamoto — The future of nuclear safety (Audio:EN, Subs:EN|JP)

戦略的パートナーシップシンポジウム（第2回）-戦略的パートナーシップによる多面的な連携深化

2021年度、東京大学が提案した“国際競争力強化に向けた「戦略的パートナーシップ」のネットワーク構築プロジェクト”が「大学の国際化促進フォーラム」事業に採択されました。本プロジェクトは、幹事校の東京大学と8大学が連携協力して、各大学が実施している戦略的パートナーシッププロジェクトの課題やグッド・プラクティス等を共有し横展開をしていくことで、我が国の高等教育の国際通用性・競争力向上を図ります。2022年度のシンポジウムでは、各大学でこれまで展開されてきた戦略的パートナーシッププロジェクトの事例等を報告するとともに、戦略的パートナーシップによる多面的な連携深化について、研究者・学生・職員など様々なレベルでの交流や、パートナーシップと他の大学ネットワークとの融合までも視野に入れ考える契機としました。

2nd Strategic Partnership Symposium -How to deepen the partnership in various aspects

東京大学 / The University of Tokyo 2023-03-09 | The Strategic Partnership Symposium 2023 was held online on Friday, March 3rd, 2023.
The University of Tokyo proposed the “Building a Network of ‘Strategic Partnerships’ to Strengthen International Competitiveness among Japanese Universities” as a project for MEXT’s Japan Forum for Internationalization of Universities project and plans to widely disseminate information by sharing challenges and good practices with other universities through the enhancement of horizontal cooperation. Through this project, the universities involved plan to enhance the recognition of Strategic Partnerships among Japanese universities and the international presence of Japanese universities.
The AY2022's symposium provided an opportunity to think about how to deepen the Strategic Partnerships in various aspects, including exchanges of people with different functions such as researchers, students or non-academic staff, and the synergy between bilateral partnerships and other alliances, consortia and networks of higher education institutes.
