GOURD & ME (Halloween Animated Short π) emi chen 2023-10-31 | Hey! Wow! I made a short film! I started this project in the beginning of October, with the challenge of finishing it before Halloween. I thought it would be a tight schedule, but turns out if I actually sit down and do the work, I can turn around this short film in three weeks (and that's including slacking off).Anyway, here's a bit of ~backstory~. In the middle of August, I finished a manuscript and sent it off for critiques, and I thought I'd use the rest of my work break to write another book idea I've had for years. BUT. The story just wasn't working out despite all my attempts to fix it. It left me frustrated, and my creativity and will to write tanked. I was miserable, and I felt like I was wasting my time.Towards the end of September, after wrangling this uncooperative story for a little more than a month, I was talking to my sister about Halloween, and I remembered a short film idea I pitched in 2022 called "Gourd & Me". It was for a mini competition at work, and if I had won, I would have had a small team to help me work on the film. I didn't win, but at the time, I had thought that if I really wanted to, I could probably make the film on my own. It had a very simple style, and the story is also pretty straightforward. Really, I just needed the time. I had sort of forgotten about this until this tiny small little conversation I had with my sister, and suddenly I got excited. I've been on a months-long break from work. Previously, I used this time to make my Wolf 359 short film, and that experience gave me confidence that I could totally handle "Gourd & Me" on my own. I had the skills, AND I had the time. At this point, it was almost October, and with the deadline of uploading the finished film on Halloween, that meant I only had one month to design, storyboard, rig, animated, and produce it. But hey, what else was I going to do with my time? And it would be a nice challenge!So, yeah. Here's the finished film! It's loosely based on a true story. A few years ago, my sister carved a tiny pumpkin (for our porg doll), and we were going to take pictures of it with the porg. But we kept procrastinating taking pictures, until the pumpkin began to grow all mouldy and gross. At the time, I thought, "Wow, if porg was real, he would be really upset. He didn't even get to do anything with this pumpkin yet, and it's already dying." I could imagine his little voice saying, "You can't go yet! There's still so much we have to do!" That pumpkin's name was Gourd, and the reason the characters in the short film are chickens is because porg is basically a fantasy chicken, and I didn't want to draw an actual porg because I didn't want to get sued by the mouse.WOW that was a lot of typing. This film was animated in Toon Boom Harmony. The backgrounds were drawn in Photoshop. The film was edited in Premiere. Sound effects are from Freesound.org. Music was made in MuseScore 2 and composed by me. Voice acting was also done by me. SO HUMAN OF YOU - Shadow & Bone Animation emi chen 2021-04-23 | Spoilers for the Grisha Trilogy in the video and in the description!Hello! As I said in the previous video, I came across a song that reminded me a lot of a relationship in Shadow & Bone (which has a Netflix adaptation coming out tomorrow!!), and instead of waiting for show footage to come out so I can make some sort of AMV, I decided to animate my own scenes. Let me pretend to be a student for a sec and give yall an artist statement.SO HUMAN OF YOU by Shireen: youtube.com/watch?v=dNeTflipN6wOne of the recurring line in this song is "You think it's alright to be cruel / That's so human of you," and that reminded me of the Darkling. By all means he's not human; he's Grisha, a shadow summoner, the most powerful person in the world. He may have initially had good motives--he wanted to protect the Grisha from the cruelty of mankind--but through the years he has used said power to manipulate and hurt and twist people to his command. Having the power to do all that--and get away with it, for the most part--inevitably gives him a god-complex. He thinks he can do anything he wants, hurt people, be cruel, because he can. Because he's not human. Because he's better than human.But the cruelty he exhibits is precisely what makes him human. In his attempts to rise above, he has only become what he has sworn to hate. Cruel beyond imagination, willing to hurt anyone who gets in his way. And that juxtaposition is what I connected between the song and the Darkling. When I searched up the rest of the lyrics, I found that the song encapsulates the complicated relationship between the Darkling and Alina, specifically from Alina's point of view. There have been many interpretations of their relationship, but I see it as one of manipulation. "They say it's only words but they hurt so much / You say your hands are warm but they are cold to the touch."The Darkling did not truly love Alina for who she is, only what she can do, and he is willing to lie, cheat, hurt, anything to keep her by his side."You f*cking hate and manipulate, tell me I am the one / You think it's alright to be cruel, that's so human of you."Alina isn't the only person he has tried to manipulate; there is also Zoya and Genya, and he roped them all in using the same words: "You and I are going to change the world.""It was a cold cold day when things fell apart / It was a sad sad thing, this ice on my heart / You think a person needs to be broken so that's what you do / You think it's alright to be cruel, that's so human of you."The final nail on the coffin in their so-called relationship was when the Darkling welded the antlers around her neck, in the cold snowy forest. If people won't listen to him, he will do his best to break their spirits down, and if that doesn't work, he casts them aside. He tries to break Alina and Zoya but killing everyone at the Little Palace and Keramzin. He tries to break Genya by scarring and blinding one of her eyes. "So you smile, I see you smile when I cry / You drag me under, drag me down when I try to surface, not to let you take my smile. But I am strong, I can be stronger than lie."The Darkling doesn't care if what he does hurts Alina, as long as it helps his own cause. He continually makes her life worse, hunting her down and bringing pain to her and everyone around her."Drag me down underwater / I can't breathe, no one saves me / drag me down into sorrow / take my hand I'll drown you with me."But Alina keeps fighting because she knows no one else can save her and defeat the Darkling; only she herself can. What's this? It's the grad film that I worked on from Summer 2018 to April 2019 when I studied at Emily Carr University! It truly was an arduous process, especially considering the time constraints and how much I was forced to cut in order to finish it on time (*cries* good bye deleted scenes...you will be missed.......) but hopefully y'all can still enjoy the Aesthetics!If you've seen my third year final film HARVEST, you might recognize some similar elements and characters. That's because HARVEST was a test-run for this film! It was for us to figure out our processes--writing, animating, compositing, all that pizazz. And let me say, it 100% helped to have explored my own process way beforehand so I wasn't scrambling to figure it out DURING the grad film development. Even then, it was a struggleeeee to get through the film. It's only four minutes long (haha "only") but there were multiple points when I thought I wouldn't be able to finish the film, even after cutting several scenes. But somehow I did it! Wowsers. Now that I've graduated, I'm not going back to school this September, which I somehow feel both happy and sad about. If you are going back to school, you got this!
