The Christian Pirate Puppets were formed back in...you know, I honestly can't remember. It was definitely a post-9/11 world, though. At the time, it was just Toby Goodshank and me, Chris Andersen. I had known Toby in high school.

We had reconnected after I had moved to New York and I had seen him perform. While I admired his skill, I grew jealous of the attention paid him which I felt was my due. Fusing those two instincts, I pressganged him into my service. Toby and/or I came up with the idea that I would read short fiction written by teenagers that I found on the internet, while he would improvise on the accoustic guitar. This tactic really highlit our two complimentary strengths; his virtuosic guitar playing and my narcissistic incompetence.

We recorded our first album, White Manlike Structure, in the winter, that much I recall. We would rehearse a song once or twice before recording it to Toby's mini-disc player. I was self concious during that recording their that evening. My part involved a lot of yelling at the top of my lungs.

We booked a show or two, until it became apparent that screaming out poorly written short stories for a half an hour straight was not the best way to entertain an audience.

Still, when all else fails, fresh tactics. We began work on our sophmore album, Unpruded. This time, songs. However, we would keep in touch with our roots and continue to attempt the co-opt the aesthetics of outsider artists (which is a great excuse to sound like you suck). We conscripted a casual aquaintance of mine, Mr. Peter Speer, to take over keyboards. Pete's "up-for-anything"-attitude-style attitude made him a perfect compliment.

I remember so many memories. Mostly being drunk. Laughing at other bands that worked hard to be good; not other bands, not specific bands, just bands in general, conceptually. Now who's the joke?

During the spring and summer of 1997, a Philadelphia based singer-songwriter named Matt Sevier was working diligently on the overdue followup to his 1993 debut album, Faultlines. That album had yielded the hit "Marry Katherine", sold well, and garnered impressive reviews from such publications as Billboard magazine and The Washington Post. Following the success of this CD, Matt landed a deal with Sony Music, built a recording studio in his home, and was putting the finishing touches on a new album when the unthinkable occured. His computer-based recorder crashed and the tiny new album was lost. Devastated, he took a month-long gig touring Europe with another area musician, seeking new energies and coping with the loss of nearly a year's work. While in Europe Matt got the call. Just as he had felt compelled years earlier to write and perform music, he now realized a second calling, which was to bring music to children.

The idea did not come "out of the blue". For years, Matt had been performing at a camp in the Poconos for developmently disabled children and had established a special relationship with the kids there. Camp directors and therapists urged Matt to explore the field, but it was not until the computer crash and the loss of his album [a happy accident, in retrospect] that Matt felt the time was right. Upon returning home from Europe in November 1997, he set to work on an album of tuneful, amusing songs written from young perspectives. Three extremely fun weeks later, he had completed It Takes All Kinds, adopted a nickname from his youth, and the children's entertainer Matt-O was born. Upon the quiet release of the album in March 1998, word began to spread about the new CD which both kids and adults were enjoying. Within weeks, a very popular radio show for children, WXPN's "Kids Corner", enthusiastically added the album to its playlist, introducing it as "one of the best children's albums we've heard in a long time."

Having heard the call to work with kids, Matt-O answered and is now available and ready to share his considerable energies will all audiences.

Unrelated to the content of this DVD, here's a paragraph about The Mario Bros Plumbing from an August 1989 newspaper article about the upcoming show:

Mario and Luigi live in a bizarre underworld located in the sub-basement of a weathered Brooklyn brownstone. As apprentice plumbers, or “Drain Heroes for Hire,” as their business card reads, the duo embark on madcap adventures and outrageous routines reminiscent of great comedy teams like Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and Fred and Barney. DIC’s creative writers have given Mario a unique, if cockeyed, view of life. His tastes in food lean towards pepperoni cheesecake and parmesan milkshakes. His world is occupied by wild creatures like the mutant Rat-o-Gator, Clog the living hairball, and Coo Koo Clock, the Ralph Cramden of the bird kingdom that keeps track of the subway trains that come rumbling through — shaking the basement at its foundation. Mario and Luigi’s dwelling is also home to such unusual furnishings as an ooey gooey Pizza Phone, an oozing dripping Sewer Wall, and the world’s only furnace that’s allergic to coal. And that’s only for starters — the basement opens into a pipe maze that stretches for miles under the streets of New York and provides the main avenue for many of the Mario Bros, adventures.
