This is a really interesting case-- one of my friends, OneSimpleGamer (youtube.com/channel/UCjhrBvrgZI44KceWCAbqsfQ) messaged me, asking me if I wanted to upload this VHS tape he'd transferred from his childhood! There's very little info about this tape online-- but even from just watching the first few minutes, I can tell you this is a primo garage sale oddity.

And you can't beat the Handycam magic-- I believe this performance was from somewhere in-between 2005-2007. (I'm gravitating towards it being a 2005 recording, due to a similar recording of Simple Gifts from the channel being listed as 2005.) I initially found it in 2008, so that gives a general timeline.

My sister noticed this song seemed to be created specifically for the event and wasn't available anywhere else, so I took the two copies available of the recording, separated the parts with Demucs, and put together a copy that had crisp vocals and stereo instrumentation, without microphone pops, strong hissing, volume issues, etc.

The Song Contest theme this year was "Ho‘ōla Lāhui, Ho‘oulu Pae ‘Āina — Vibrant People, Thriving Lands." The hō'ike segment was titled, "Pauahi Lani, He ‘Ōpū Ali‘i".

EDIT: Apparently, this song HAS been recorded on an album that goes by the same name of this Song Contest theme. The CD mentions this song was composed by Randie Kamuela Fong.

From the Song Contest program: "Tonight’s Hō‘ike explores the contemplations of Princess Pauahi in the days leading up to the signing of her Will.

Perhaps she was inspired by the beauty and mystery of the pristine mountain forests she inherited from her cousin, Princess Ruth. Or, maybe she was deeply moved by the ingenuity of her once vibrant people who had harvested the bounty of land and sea for centuries.

Since it's made of only 5 seconds of footage, I hyper-slowed it down and then re-organized some footage from the opening sequence of Fantasia 2000 (you know, the one with those paper-airplane mosaic butterflies!), and added a kaleidoscope feature over it. Hope it helps anyone who wants to share this song with others but felt like it needed a fully-fledged video experience.
