Snorkelling with Manta Rays at Nusa Lembongan Stray Along The Way 2024-02-06 | One of the best places in the world to snorkel with manta rays in on the island of Nusa Penida in Indonesia.Nusa Penida is the main island off of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan - a small archipelago off BaliWe dived a number of spots namely: Secret Manta, Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay. Each spot was unique in it's own way, but all were incredibly beautiful!As with most popular tourist attractions, this one comes with lots of crowds. The boat operators do seem to do their best to ensure that people get a good experience without interfering with the mantas, but if you don't love crowds, this might feel a little too much. Still an amazing experience to be up close and personal with these beautiful creatures.

The Golden Grotto Hike Stray Along The Way 2023-02-05 | The Golden Grotto Hike in the Sanzhan river gorge is one of the hiking highlights around Hualien, Taiwan.The hike starts at the confluence of the river and follows the southern arm into the central mountain range and ends at a beautiful waterfall in the Golden Grotto.The terrain is very hard-going, with loads of slippery boulders to scramble over, overgrown jungle paths as well as narrow ledges in some parts.The trail crosses the river at many points, to be sure to know what the water level is like before trying this hike out. If there's been any recent rains, give this one a miss as conditions on the river and in the grotto can get dangerous when in flood.We decided to give the Golden Grotto a go - here's what it looked like...

Sardine Run Moalboal Stray Along The Way 2023-02-04 | The Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon that occurs off the shores of Moalboal on Cebu Island in the Philippines. Massive shoals of sardines hug the coastal drop-off zone just a few metres off the beach, which makes finding and swimming with them really easy.While this is an incredible occurrence, as with many spectacles that are relatively easy to access, it is unlikely you'll get to experience this natural treasure by yourself. Lots of local boat operators bring scores of tourists to this area and it can become a mess of boats and people very quickly.We found that heading out to the sardines early in the morning was a good tactic for avoiding the crowds, as well as just before sunset when all the boats were leaving again.While the shoals are shallow enough to snorkel with, there are also a number of diving operators in the town that can get you up close to the shoal away from the madding crowd.In all, it's a fantastic experience albeit a little bit much in terms of the crowd, and one we'd recommend you travel for._________________________________________________________________________Music: Song: Math by Michael FK Ambient Cinematic Sounds 2018
How to make a car awning with a tarp for under R1,500 (US$100) Stray Along The Way 2022-03-18 | In this video we look at a how to make a car awning with a tarp for under R1500 (US$100).Tarps, or tarpaulins, are great for wind, rain and sun protection and come in all different shapes and sizes.The tarp I'm using in this video is 3.5 metres by 3.5 metres (11.5ft x 11.5ft) and puts out a shade area of around 12 square metres (132 square feet). This is a really practical size and offers plenty of space and shelter for a small group.One of the biggest challenges when putting up a trap is the wind, so this setup makes use of your car to not only block the wind, but also to anchor the tarp so that it's super quick and easy to set up - even on your own.Step 1: Park your car so that it offers the greatest sun and wind protection.Step 2: Fill 3 sandbags to about halfway (use pegs if you're not on soft sand).Step 3: Roll down the sandbags and place them on a nylon strap that you have prepared with a loop knot at each end and a large carabiner clipped in. How to set up a big tarp by yourself (without trees) Stray Along The Way 2021-04-06 | In this video we look at a how to set up a big tarp shelter by yourself without trees.Tarps, or tarpaulins, are great for wind, rain and sun protection and come in all different shapes and sizes.The tarp I'm using in this video is 6 metres by 5.5 metres (20ft x 18ft) and puts out a shade area of around 30 square metres (323 square feet). This size is great for families and large groups, however, there are some challenges when it comes to putting it up by yourself.The biggest challenge when putting up a big trap shelter by yourself is the wind, so it's always best to move slowly and methodically and keep the tarp pegged down as you go to avoid the wind getting under it and blowing it away.Step 1: Check the direction of the wind and aim to set up your tarp at 90 degrees to the wind.Step 2: Keep you peg bag in your pocket or on your belt and unravel the tarp little by little. Peg down the corners after each section is unfolded so that the tarp is completely pegged down by the time it's fully spread out.Step 3: Use a simple loop knot to attach the guy ropes to the corners of the tarp.Step 4: Walk the other end of guy ropes out as far as they go and secure them down to the ground with tent pegs.Step 5: Remove the pegs holding down the tarp and assemble the tarp poles.Step 6: Loosen the guy ropes closest to the first pole eyelet (grommet) and insert the pole. GoPro Mouth Mount: How to Shoot POV Bodyboarding and Surfing Stray Along The Way 2020-09-08 | In this video we take an in depth look at how to shoot POV footage of bodyboarding and surfing using a mouth mount. POV stands for Point of View and simply means that you, the viewer, get to see the scene through the eyes of the person who shot it. It's a great, dynamic view and gives viewers a very real sense of being the character in the scene. POV is one of the best angles for surfing and bodyboarding, particularly barrel shots, as it puts you right in that space and lets you capture the chaos and fury of a big, scary barrel and then re-live it over and over again. A mouth mount is a device that allows you hands free control of your GoPro, because you're holding it in place with your mouth, usually by biting down on a mouth piece. Pros: - Mouth mounts give you the best POV angle. - It's definitely the smallest rig you can use. - The Pro Standard model gives you the added option of a board angle. The Sardine Run: Moalboal, Philippines Stray Along The Way 2020-02-12 | The Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon that occurs off the shores of Moalboal on Cebu Island in the Philippines. Massive shoals of sardines hug the coastal drop-off zone just a few metres off the beach, which makes finding and swimming with them really easy.While this is an incredible occurrence, as with many spectacles that are relatively easy to access, it is unlikely you'll get to experience this natural treasure by yourself. Lots of local boat operators bring scores of tourists to this area and it can become a mess of boats and people very quickly.We found that heading out to the sardines early in the morning was a good tactic for avoiding the crowds, as well as just before sunset when all the boats were leaving again.While the shoals are shallow enough to snorkel with, there are also a number of diving operators in the town that can get you up close to the shoal away from the madding crowd.In all, it's a fantastic experience albeit a little bit much in terms of the crowd, and one we'd recommend you travel for._________________________________________________________________________Music: Song: Math by Michael FK Ambient Cinematic Sounds 2018

The Golden Grotto: Sanzhan, Taiwan Stray Along The Way 2019-10-01 | The Golden Grotto Hike in the Sanzhan river gorge is one of the hiking highlights around Hualien, Taiwan.The hike starts at the confluence of the river and follows the southern arm into the central mountain range and ends at a beautiful waterfall in the Golden Grotto.The terrain is very hard-going, with loads of slippery boulders to scramble over, overgrown jungle paths as well as narrow ledges in some parts.The trail crosses the river at many points, to be sure to know what the water level is like before trying this hike out. Explore the waterways of Lake St LuciaLake St Lucia is the largest estuary system in Africa. It's huge! And one of the best ways to explore it is from the water. 2. Stroll the Estuary Boardwalk and do some birding at the estuary mouthThe boardwalk leads to the beach while passing through a beautiful coastal forest. It meanders fairly close to the estuary so keep an eye out for birds and animals along the shoreline as well as in the water.3. Enjoy some beach time on the unspoiled coastlineThe length of coast from St Lucia right up to the Mozambican border is one of our favourite stretches in South Africa. The beaches are simply out of this world. While St Lucia has a number of winners within the town limits, a few other beaches worth checking out include Mission Rocks as well as Cape Vidal.4. Snorkel Cape Vidal's rocky pointSpeaking of Cape Vidal, we'd rate this as one of the top snorkeling destinations in South Africa. The snorkeling spot is right on the beach and follows a finger of rocks that extends out toward the open ocean. This rock-shelf creates a breakwater that makes for epic snorkeling conditions.Guided snorkeling trips are available at Cape Vidal, and we'd highly recommend them.5. Hike to Bat Cave on the Eastern ShoresThis is a great little trip if you're keen for something a little different. Just north of Mission Rocks is a small cave which is home to a colony of Egyptian fruit bats. You can access the cave from the beach, although you'll need to time your trip with a low tide to ensure you can get there and back without getting wet. Don't forget to bring along a torch or headlamp so you can see the bats when you get there.6. Greet the ocean's giants on a boat-based whale watching tourWhale watching is an absolute must in St Lucia! Nothing can really give you an appreciation for these gentle giants like watching them from the water. There are a number of excellent tour operators who run whale watching trips from St Lucia from around mid May to December when the humpback whales are around.7. Explore St Lucia and surrounds by bicycleOne trip we found really great was the cycle tour of St Lucia. Your guide leads the way and stops off at a number of very interesting sites as well as points out various plant and animal life along the way. It's a nice way to get around and also a great way to get in some holiday exercise too.8. Horseback ride the beach and bushSt Lucia is one of the coolest places to go horse riding. There aren't too many places out there where you can ride through a game reserve and along the beach all on the same trip. The horse riding trails pass through a section of the Eastern Shores of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and is a great way to get right up close to the wildlife without scaring them away. We encountered a number of zebra, wildebeest, and other antelope that where perfectly relaxed around the horses. After that it’s onto the beach for a brisk ride back to the town, passing by the estuary mouth along the way.9. Explore the Eastern and Western Shores on a guided evening game drive.Night drives are the best!! The bush seems to come alive at night and so getting onto an evening game drive is a real experience. The public aren't allowed to drive in game reserves after dark so you'll need to do this with a guide, but that's well worth it. Their eyes are accustomed to spotting animals in the dark and they offer a really great experience.10. Self-driveSt Lucia is near both the Eastern and Western Shores Sections of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This area has been the success story of a re-wilding project that started a number of years ago and is now home to many of Africa's big wildlife including elephants, rhinos, buffalo, leopard and so much more.The roads in the park are mostly tarred with a few gravel tracks here and there, but visitors can explore the park in their own vehicles without any trouble. There are a number of excellent view sites and picnic spots within the reserve, so be sure to pack for the day.11. Witness turtles nesting on the sandy beachesThe turtle season runs from November to March and is an excellent time to be in St Lucia. The town is abuzz with the talk of turtles and St Lucia is one of the most accessible best places in the country to witness them nesting and hatching.12. Take in the peace of an African sunsetThere are a number of great places to watch the sunset, but the aptly named Sunset Jetty is probably the best one.

From the first time I tried to ride a floppy board with diving fins at my home town in Durban, it's been an incredible ride and every year just keeps getting better. This past year has been one of my all time best years in the water!
