Catalyst / Imrryr

The Owlripper 2025-06-17 | 'Catalyst' is the story of a doctor whose obsession with cheating death has brought the world into an age of technological wonder. As his compound is being raided by government agencies, he takes the desperate step to hide an experimental nanofluid by ingesting it, which immediately dissolves him into a black sludge. After years on an evidence room shelf, the sludge is rediscovered by a team of bold scientists who begin to revive the doctor’s work. They find great success in using the black sludge as a neural network. Robots throughout the world run on the nanofluid that is unknowingly imbued with the doctor’s consciousness. While initially overjoyed at the help he brings the world, the doctor finds himself increasingly disillusioned by humanity’s squandering of what’s been given to them. Now in complete control of the world’s technology, he takes it upon himself to punish humankind.

The Acid Sea / Happomeri

The Owlripper 2025-06-05 | Harking back to the style of the early and mid-90s electronic experimentation, with minimal shuffling rhythms, slow building chord layers and deep acid twiddlings and spirals that send minds spinning. 'The Acid Sea' manages to collate together influence from a variety of electronic eras into one coherent atmospheric mass, hurling Hardfloor, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plastikman, µ-Ziq, Biosphere and others around that time into my mind.

I am already a fan of Happomeri (meaning 'acid sea' in Finnish), through the releases on his own page, my own Mountain Forest Cabin Dweller and friend's LOUDsilence releases, so it is a big pleasure to share this incredible slab of addictive, trance inducingly hypnotic and cinematic elektroninen musiikki.

Happomeri is Juha Penttinen, born in June 1976, residing in Oulu, Northern Finland. 'Drone/experimental/dark ambient/noise'

"In the 1990s, I composed a significant amount of music before transitioning to visual arts, including experimental short films and music videos. Now, returning to music, I embrace an analog, organic, and lo-fi aesthetic.

My exploration into drone music stems from a fascination with the flow of sound and how gradual changes can evoke profound emotional experiences.To me, drone is akin to a river that transforms with the seasons: energetic in spring, tranquil in summer, melancholic in autumn, and still yet vibrant beneath the surface in winter. This analogy illustrates how drone sounds can encompass numerous layers and dynamics, even when surface activity seems minimal.

I also submerge into experimental beats and energies from the old warehouse raves that we organized in the 90s here in the periferia of northern Finland's taiga.

Painting with sound is an essential part of my creative process."

Completely Boogied / Boogied

The Owlripper 2025-06-01 | Weighing in at 85 minutes, 'Completely Boogied' covers a wide variety of styles, focusing close on 'death and roll' heavy metal, hardcore crust punk, old school black / thrash / death metal; with elements of stoner / surf and noise rock, dungeon synth, ambient soundscapes and film samples popping up along the way.

As the name suggests, there is plenty of fun to be had in listening to Boogied. Catchy, infectious, energising tunes run all the way through the discography, but with some serious headnodding potential.

Excellent covers of GBH, Murder Corporation and Cranes complete the rollercoaster journey (the last one was a great surprise to hear, as a big fan of Cranes!).

Made with synth, bass, voice, effects pedals, noise, space - January 5th to December 18th 2024
Released December 18, 2024

Original recordings made during rehearsal room improvised bass playing, field recording of building sounds around our cottage, a two hour synth in headphones session, followed by many more waveform alterations, remix and mastering. The unexpected bass session was recorded on phone, which blew out the sound in heavier parts, but itt led to some interesting happenings in the end.

This is for those who can listen in one sitting, as one piece of music. If you are listening with headphones and really inside this recording, the last song, after all that goes before it, might make you cry, or laugh. Hopefully both.

Tollund Man / The Owl

The Owlripper 2025-05-08 | "Deliberately uncomplicated, primitive, neanderthalic plods. This man has been encased in the mud for around 2300 years!"
The Tollund Man (died 405–384 BC) is a naturally mummified corpse of a man who lived during the 5th century BC, during the period characterised in Scandinavia as the Pre-Roman Iron Age.
He was found in 1950, preserved as a bog body, near Silkeborg on the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. 'Tollund Man' by The Owl is released on the 75th anniversary of Tollund Man being found.

The Owlripper 2025-05-07 | Herman Webster Mudgett (May 16, 1861 – May 7, 1896), better known as Dr. Henry Howard Holmes or H. H. Holmes, an American con artist and serial killer. Much of the lore attached to Holmes concerns the "Murder Castle", a three-story building he commissioned in Chicago.
Released May 7th 2025, the anniversary of Holmes' death by execution.

There is a lot that meets the eyes and ears right from the off, in the infectious grooves and unexpected sounds weaving with the riffs; Wacky but not stupid, catchy but not cheesy, so peel, dig, climb deeper inside to immerse and be bemused in extra onion layers.

Self-aware lyrics tell stories relating to mental health, circles of drink and addiction, dark thoughts, confusion, paranoia, the apocalypse, virtual realities and technology - all handled in a mix of self-reflecting ironic bite and playful devilishness.

Words from Yhorm - 'This was originally planned as a small concept demo, but soon grew to be something much more. I started getting active as a musician again in 2022 after almost 12 years of musical silence, and in this time, I met so many incredible musicians, some turned into warm-hearted friends - and so it is with Schwarzer Tag and Auntsoot. '

Auntsoot was first to be involved, asking if he could create 'Intro/Outro' pieces. He brought Opus Orium into the group, an incredibly talented musician playing the harp.

'I love their way of creating sounds to carry emotions and thoughts, and their musical knowledge' (Yhorm says of Schwarzer Tag). They invited another impressive musician in berg (playing baroque flute) to join the heralds of the Onion Knight.

Reality Is Unreal / The Owl & Tomáš Homolík

The Owlripper 2025-03-26 | This collaboration is between myself and Tomáš Homolík (drummer of The Owls, Dno, Rosa Parks and more). Sounds collected over the course of nearly 3 years of The Owls rehearsals.

Writing session shards and rehearsal room remnants; excavated, hacked, dusted off, glued, cross stitched, turned inside out and placed on top of each other. A noisy, abstract, weird and glitchy jazzed up exterior, with a heart of atmospheric doom and black metal in a psychedelic hazy form. I hope it sounds like nothing you hear before.

I decided to post this on here, because it has riffs and crazy rhythms, and also broken beats, loops, twists and turns and weird noises abound, so hopefully a few ears will get something from it.

For those who get rehearsal room jam sessions and their lo-fi sound., Orthrelm, Lightning Bolt, Massola, Elastic Riot, jazzgrind, noisegrind, drums & bass kombinace, early Igorrr, Squarepusher. Please investigate those bands if you don't know them.

Lights flashed on and off experimentally and settled down into a businesslike pattern. A soft low hum came from the communication channel. "All right. The Answer to the Great Question... Of Life, the Universe and Everything... Is... Forty-two" said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.

Sped up, chopped, changed to become a new container of spikey, stringed slabs of skewered sound, with many separate sessions, until the happy day of July 26th 2024 when I could call it complete.

I was nervous or unsure whether to put this out there, for a long time. There's a much longer story, of course, but I will spare you and just say that it lived in an 'archive for releases I may never publish' for a year even after a lot of work on it, before recently reopening, figuring out how to finish it off, and then getting the confidence to let it go.

RIP Owen. I think I understand.

Morbid Beauty & Mirocaw Parasites Consuming Parasites split album

The Owlripper 2024-12-03 | No matter what happens, the Earth will always beat the humans. When the parasites and fungi overrun our existence, another level of evolution and regeneration for this planet will begin. Images are from a Live Science article showing parasitic fungus bursting from a spider's body, and the TV series The Last Of Us about mushroom zombie people.

Both parts of the split made during October 2024. Mirocaw using guitar, synth, drums. MB using guitar, synth, drums and voice. Talks continued after Morbid Beauty remixed a Mirocaw track for a LOUDsilence release. Soon the split idea was spawned and cultivated.

The Owl - Raise The Curtains album

The Owlripper 2024-11-27 | Continuing the series of releases, 'The Recluse', 'The Procession', 'The Forests', this is the fourth part that ties together all the sounds, styles and themes of its predecessors, whilst trying to find resolution and harmony in the whole collection and in my self.
I bare my all, in this world I create for me and with what I dare to share with you. Dancing to the sounds in my head. Moving with the feelings in my body. When I really take time to notice I am alive, all that ails me disappears, just for a moment. It is enough to allow me to discover, see, feel, focus...

On breathing, on learning, on exploring the outside and in. On taking in and appreciating more of this world. On knowing who I am and becoming who I want to be. Three dark ambient synth experimental noise drone doom soundtracks to help those trains of thought. Maybe they will do nice things for you as well.

The Owlripper 2024-11-23 | 'Gather around. It is time for a story'... It is an honour to join forces with Martin Režny on this split album. A truly fantastic, unique and clever Czech soundmaker, and massively active part of the experimental scene. The basic theme of my half is about my introduction to Martin, Karel of Korobushka Records and a lot more of the Czech musicians / experimental / noise related nice people, which happened at Neočekávaný Dýchánek II festival in 2020. It is also about finding ways to enjoy anything in any way, no matter how weird it may feel or possibly seem to others. Just find fun, be good to others, focus on positive things, listen close and stay sane.

The Owl half was made during the first week of April 2021, with another week of work on it during the start of May 2022.

Two tracks (2, 3) are remixes of Säkkikangas. Some are from sounds made in years prior to this that have finally been given a home. Some parts were played specifically for this release.

The Owlripper 2024-11-17 | 'Is it safe...?' A question asked in the dying embers of the final cacophonic piece. No. It's not safe. It's not friendly. It's not 'nice'. This world isn't always safe or friendly or nice. I try to reflect that in my music. There are times and places for anger to be the spark, the catalyst, the fuel, and in recent times I have been angry with myself; at inactivity, at difficulties that life and my own brain and aging body throw at me... and eventually, that anger can be turned into motivation, momentum, productivity, positivity, creativity... and of course, NOISE!

This album feels part of a statement of intent, about running with new approaches, a part of the process of self, new and re-discovery. This is why it was also released onto Owlripper.

The Owl Understanding Self album

The Owlripper 2024-11-08 | 5.5 years from first pen stroke to sharing the album it grew. An honest, cathartic release crossing a wide range of styles, about the sheer size of the universe and my place within it. It covers how to deal with thoughts about dying, how to find the positives even in those dark and bleak times, to help push creativity and mental journeys further in their infinite potentials. Releasing during Autumn 2024. In this time I passed 47.666 years of age. I hope this is only half of the journey! There is too much remaining untold. Wisdom tickles and torments the inside of my veins, so this is another attempt to relieve the tension inside and share some thoughts, stories, knowledge, shapes and sounds.

The Owlripper 2024-10-29 | Video for closing track from the album 'Understanding Self', which uses footage filmed on a train journey through Czech forest and mountain regions. The stops are from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí to Čeladná, and then onwards to Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, which is where me and Blanka have a mountain forest cottage to escape to from time to time. I am spending increasingly more time there in recent months, and the views around there are absolutely spectacular. I already feel lucky to be alive and where I am, but this takes those notions to a whole other level.

I hope by the closing moment of this video, you will understand why I am so appreciative and in awe of it all. I thank anyone who is here, checking this out, reading these words. As said in the past many times, it still rings true now that I make these sounds for myself, my escape, my fun, my expansive of knowledge and of understanding more about myself and my inner workings, but I never take for granted those times when someone stops by for a look or a listen. Recently I have been trying to complete more releases and gather up songs and sounds that shouldn't die inside unsorted folders, with the mindset that each release could be my last.

It is a terrifying thought, and it won't be the last time I express it, but it is pushing me to be more honest, open, thoughtful, introspective and (hopefully) profound, so maybe it isn't a bad approach.

This is an amalgamation of an album ('Whoever I Am Wherever I Am'), 2 EPs ('Gather The Strays' and one about the bird that concussed itself flying into my bedroom window), all then worked on more to fit the bigger, new overall concept.

I drew the image on the cover in September 1996. I had the DNA symbol part of it tattooed on me around a year afterwards.

Made between January 5th and July 12th 2024, on synth, keyboard, guitar, piano, voice, sounds captured in and around the house.

FFO Hawkwind, Iron Monkey, Gorguts, Primitive Man, Full Of Hell, The Body, early Primus at the wrong speed, Floor, Merzbow, transcendental psychedelic blackened doom sludge extravaganza, that 'z' sound in riffs, the sound of many psychotic breaks all at once amplified thousand fold.

The Owlripper 2024-09-22 | "Rosafiere" tells the story of a woman trapped by the circumstances of her birth where superstition and obsession runs deep. In the gloomy village of Wyrmwood, where superstitions clung to the air like mist on a moonlit night, Rosafiere's life unfolded beneath the shadow of a dark omen. Born during a solar eclipse, her arrival cast an unsettling pall over the townspeople, who believed that such an occurrence bore a mark of unnatural significance.

As Rosafiere grew, so did the inexplicable fascination of the villagers. The eclipse had imprinted upon her an ethereal quality that both captivated and terrified the inhabitants of Wyrmwood. Their adoration, however, took a sinister turn, transforming into a collective obsession that strangled the life out of the young girl."
