Watch what happens when a friendly game of Skeeball quickly turns into a bet and the next thing we knew, we were lining up for an ultramarathon. Joined by our friends from up north (and my JMT partners from our epic 2020 through hike adventure), we tackled the Leona Divide 55K much of which runs along the Pacific Coast Trail.
As a rustbuster to kickstart my running season, the race presented both excitement and uncertainty. Little did I know, the twists and turns of this race would push me to my limits and beyond.
Experience the highs and lows of ultrarunning as I push through miles of beautiful terrain, fueled by the joy of the trails and the support of fellow runners. But as the race unfolds, unexpected challenges arise, including running out of water in the unforgiving final stretch. Hope you enjoy!

After a decade of living in a one-bedroom apartment in Hermosa Beach, CA my wife Hilary and I got a unique opportunity to move into a converted garage/tiny home on our childhood home. Through the encouragement of my wife after some initial hesitation, we decided to take the plunge and pare down many of our possessions. A year later, we can safely say that it was one of the best decisions we had made and it was a great way to kickstart our first year of marriage.
So join me as I take you through a tour of our tiny home, the creative ways we made it work and how it's helped us strengthen our bonds with family.
Embark on a breathtaking journey across the French/Italian/Swiss Alps as I share my incredible experience trail running and hosting the 103 mile/165 kilometer Tour du Mont Blanc. Join me for a 6-day adventure through stunning landscapes, picturesque trails, and unforgettable moments.
We got to explore the beauty of the Mont Blanc region thanks to the support of our expert guides at Vagabond Trails, who specialize in trekking and running guide tours. From challenging terrains to awe-inspiring views, this video hopefully captures the essence of an unforgettable adventure.
Hopefully, you'll be inspired to join us this summer on the next trek!

On November 5, 2023 I will be running the New York City Marathon with my friend Justin Grunewald in honor of Gabrielle "Gabe" Grunewald, an American middle-distance professional runner.
After living for 10 years with adenoid cystic carcinoma, Gabriele passed away on June 11, 2019, at her home in Minneapolis surrounded by family and friends. Her story and legacy continue with the Brave Like Gabe Foundation that inspires others to share their own struggles while also helping to find better, more effective treatments for rare cancers.
On May 20, 2023 I married my amazing partner Hilary Matheson (now Hilary Yang) at a service held in Torrance, CA at our favorite local brewery: Hermosa Brewing Company (https://hermosabrewingco.com). Surrounded by loved ones from both near and far, we wanted the day to be about celebrating not just our love, but our love for our friends, family and community. After months of planning and DIYing, we were able to pull off our favorite day ever.
Our thanks to everyone that could be a part of making it so special. And a special thank you to Dave, Jane and Jorge from Hermosa Brewing Co, Jessica Lococo from Town & Social Events, our amazing DJ Schuyler Hall and Aly Pedersen from The Inspired Palate!

HOKA athlete Hayden Hawks burst onto the ultrarunning scene in 2016 with a surprising win at the very tough and highly competitive Speedgoat 50K in Snowbird, Utah. Since then, he's been on a tear with wins at some of the most competitive ultramarathons in country and in the world, including wins at the CCC 100K, Lavaredo 120K and the JFK 50 Mile. Next up, he has his sights set on the historic Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run on June 24th. After an 8th place men's finish in 2021 and a 2nd place finish last year, he has his sights set on the win.
15 Hours is a series that chronicles a day in the life of a notable athlete. In this episode, we follow Hayden Hawks as wraps up a day of workouts, physical therapy and time with family with 3 weeks left before the big day.
Many thanks to HOKA for supporting this project.

On a gorgeous January So Cal morning, I decided to document my run without narration, music or any other sound except for what I naturally and organically hear when I'm running trails. So come join me as I run 10+ miles through the coastal trails of the Santa Monica Mountains as I try to convey the joy and simplicity of running in nature.
Usually around this time, I'll put together a wrap-up video of the previous year. But this time, I'm breaking a bit from tradition to get a little more personal. It's certainly hard for me to talk about the past year let alone the past couple of years without mentioning my partner and better half Hilary Matheson: instagram.com/thehilaryann
I hope you enjoy this look back and the overall message and intention behind this film. Thanks to everyone for supporting this channel, both on Patreon and on YouTube - for everyone that has taken the time to like, comment and subscribe in particular.
After a long hiatus from racing more than 50+ miles, I decided somewhat on a whim to sign up and race the Javelina 100km race put on by the good people at Aravaipa Running. On less than a month's notice, I put in some condensed training for the big party in the desert with the goal of having fun but also putting in a performance I can be proud of.
Huge thanks to my partner Hilary Matheson for helping crew/film/pace, Jamil Coury/Jubilee Page/Tony Hill/Aravaipa Running, David Hettana, Kevin and Natalie Horn and all my friends that pitched in to help crew during the race.

In December of 2021, my partner Hilary Matheson and I got the amazing opportunity to race (my first in 20 months!), tour and eat our way through Thailand. From the chaotic tuk-tuk rides in Bangkok to the lush, technical jungles of Chiang Mai Province - we had an absolute blast in a world that was just beginning to come back to life after being closed to travelers due to the pandemic. It was an amazing experience thanks to The Sports Authority and the good people at Thailand by UTMB.
The food, the trails, the culture, the people...I hope I did the experience and the country justice. Can't wait to visit again Thailand!
The upcoming 3rd edition of Doi Inthanon Thailand By UTMB will be an Asia Pacific Major with over 5,000 runners from 64 countries. The events will be held December 8-11, 2022.

There's nothing quite like UTMB week in Chamonix, France. After a two year hiatus, I was thrilled to be back in the French Alps - this time with my partner Hilary Matheson. We tackled the OCC 55K - one of UTMB's sister races in the days leading up to the flagship 100 mile race. This is a look behind the scenes in the week leading up to it and the journey of our OCC itself.
A separate video about our UTMB experience as media members forthcoming.

On July 8, 2022 on our way to Silverton and the Hardrock 100, my girlfriend Hilary (@HilaryAnn) I came across a couple of creatures crossing the highway just outside of Colorado. Turns out they were a couple of stray dogs, one much younger than the other but both dirty, malnourished and hungry. One of them, a heeler/terrier mix, ended up becoming the newest addition to the family.
Meet Charlie (Salami).
A sweet and loving 6-month old furball who we ended up adopting into the family permanently. It's been an interesting ride to say the least, as he'd completely derailed our Colorado summer plans and beyond...but we feel extremely lucky and fortunate to have found him.
More Charlie adventures to come!
Many thanks to the good folks at Aspen Tree Animal Hospital (aspentreeanimalcare.com) for taking Charlie in when everyone else was booked up - your love and care was MUCH appreciated!

My guest on this episode is Jeff Browning, one of the most durable and successful male athletes in American ultrarunning.
In this conversation, we discussed some of the keys to his longevity, race stories from Hardrock, HURT 100, UTMB among others and how a change in diet to one of a more paleo/keto/OFM one helped with race recovery and much, much more.
Jeff ended up running a 26:17:43 at this year's Hardrock 100, good for 5th place overall at 50 years of age.

On March 19, 2022 a small group of like-minded adventure seekers sought out to run the double crossing of the Grand Canyon (48 Miles/77 Kilometers) in a single day. We descended down the Bright Angel trail, across the Colorado River and through the Canyon before we ascended up the North Kaibab trail to the nearly 8,300' North Rim only to turn around and do it all over again.
This is the film of our traverse through one of the most stunning places on Earth, what we brought with us, the highs and lows and everything in between.
Thanks to all the members of the Adventure Club and a special thanks to Hilary Matheson and Mark Griffith for the additional footage.
I haven't run an ultramarathon since April of 2019. And I missed it.
With long distance adventures looming on the horizon, I wanted to come back to the sport I've been involved in since 2009. But a meniscus tear has questioned my confidence in recent years to see if that was possible.
Enter PCTR and Montaña de Oro 50K - a race series and an event I'd run since the beginning, when things were more low-key and grassroots. It made sense to come back to this race (I had a previous DNF) to retrace my roots and get inspired to run again. Thanks to Greg Lanctot and all the amazing volunteers, photographers and fellow runners out there. It truly was great to be back!
Beyond his running resume and achievements - of which there are many including running 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days (all under 3 hours), being the last man standing at the Quarantine Backyard Ultra during the Covid shutdowns (260+ miles in over 63 hours) and multiple world records...he also manages to carry a full-time job, a wife, 2 sons and multiple different hobbies and passions outside of endurance sports.
Today, we attempt to unpack as much of it that we can, find out how he recovers so quick, how to get out of low moments during races, who he enjoys competing against and what's exactly in store for what may be his biggest endurance feat yet: running across America this May 1st from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean in a project called Running Home. All to raise money for clean water projects to underdeveloped countries.
“There isn't time, so brief is life, for bickerings, apologies, heartburnings, callings to account. There is only time for loving, and but an instant, so to speak, for that.” -Mark Twain
What makes for a good life?
I explore this question (thanks for the assist Dr. Waldinger) while also looking back at the year that was in 2021. I also open up about the past couple of years in the aftermath of Covid-19 and the pandemic, what "languishing" is and its effects on me, losing our family business during protests, creating opportunity from misfortune and finding reasons for optimism approaching the new year.
It is my sincere hope that you take this message to heart, emphasize good human relationships above all else and find your version of "the good life" in 2022.

Announcement! This upcoming Thursday, May 7th at 4pm PST, I will be embarking on the Goggins Challenge for the subsequent 48 hours. What exactly IS the Goggins Challenge you ask?
Essentially when the clock starts, each participant runs 4 miles every 4 hours until the 48 hours are up. It will be 12 sets in all for a total of 48 miles. As stated in his video, if you prefer to walk it, bike it, maybe run 4 kilometers instead, do calisthenics, push-ups...whatever that may look like for you, you can take on the challenge.
My goal is to select a different participant on a Zoom call before each set to dedicate the next one to a medical provider they know who is working the frontlines during this Covid-19 pandemic. Let's crush this challenge together!
