The way we work is evolving, and we’re evolving with it.
Todd Rose, author, professor, and social entrepreneur, joins Evan Baehr in a discussion about what it takes to create a healthy and thriving workplace. In traditional workplace dynamics, things like self-silencing and collective illusions keep us from speaking out about the things that we hope can change, and it’s stifling
This is why the landscape is changing. Rose shares insights from businesses like Morning Star Tomatoes, where they’ve eliminated the concept of bosses and trust their employees to work without management. This structure, they’ve learned, has created an environment where the work feels not just productive, but meaningful.
But this is only the beginning. These conversations about the history and impact of hierarchical work structures are the starting point for progress. The real challenge is continuing to turn these ideas into action, reshaping the future of work for the better.

Designing buildings should be much easier given today’s technological advancements. But the way we build cities hasn’t changed much in the past 100 years.
What innovations and efficiencies would we uncover if we tried building our homes with the same tech we build our iPhones?
On this episode of In the Arena, host Evan Baehr sits down with Andrew Staniforth, who’s leading a team of designers, engineers, and architects to rethink how we build.
Would you choose safety over privacy? In the ‘90s, the US government wanted you to say yes.

Encryption technology sought to protect personal privacy, but Lawmakers like Joe Biden and President Clinton pushed hard to regulate and even ban it, fearing that criminals could use it to communicate in secret. This sparked a decades-long debate: Who gets control?
Tech pioneers like Phil Zimmerman believed digital privacy was a fundamental right. In 1991, he created the open source cryptology software Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) to help internet users keep their online communications to themselves.
This controversy nearly reshaped the future of the internet, and its effects are still felt today. Now, with artificial intelligence becoming more accessible to internet users, we’re facing similar questions: How do we protect privacy while navigating new technological frontiers? Should we rely on lessons from the past, or are new strategies needed?

Suburbia was once sold as a picket-fence dream for the nuclear family. But as inflation and house prices skyrocket, the average American family cannot afford suburban life.
Strip malls and office parks sit empty due to bloated rent prices. Could we transform these vacant buildings into affordable living spaces in the midst of a nationwide housing crisis?
Here’s how we can retrofit suburbia to fit our country’s current needs.
The concept was introduced through a Monash University project in Australia known as the DishBrain project. Researchers grew ~800,000 brain cells on a chip and taught it to play the game Pong in just five minutes.
The project’s success led to funding from the Australian military and the formation of Cortical Labs.
Why explore this option? While GPUs are costly to manufacture and use a ton of electricity, neurons can be grown in a lab and, according to the Cortical Labs Chief Scientific Officer Brett Kagan, "neuron-enhanced biocomputers appear to learn much faster" and use "much less power, than today's AI machine learning chips."
But if we're using living cells, are these considered living systems? And what happens if they develop enough to mimic human intelligence? What do you think about this convergence of biology and technology?
Adapa says their reusable molds could save 69 truckloads of polystyrene with just one machine.
As a society, we’ve become…
Cynical about the motivations of others
Simplistic in our thinking about complex issues
Certain that we have all the answers
Scared of the challenges we face
It’s understandable, but unsustainable. And it doesn’t have to be like this.
Progress happens when we’re…
Curious about new ideas
Thoughtful about hard questions
Open to considering other perspectives
Constructive about the challenges we face

Despite a push in recent decades for cleaner, more sustainable energy sources, fossil fuels still account for the vast majority of energy in the US.
Could producing infinite clean energy be as simple as “getting cheap stuff hot?” Meet the entrepreneur who has built a battery that clean, cheap, always-on energy to industry.
So, how does this battery work, and could it truly be a “silver bullet” solution for the climate crisis? In the Arena host Evan Baehr investigates.
In the late 80s, pagers were more than just gadgets—they became symbols of crime, unfairly stigmatizing kids and even landing some of them in jail. Here’s what the ‘pager problem” can teach us about tech panic.

In the late 80s and early 90s, pagers became a symbol of fear and suspicion. Initially seen as a useful one-way texting tool, they were quickly linked to the drug trade by the media and lawmakers. This shift in perception led to strict laws that unfairly targeted young people. Kids were arrested, suspended, and stigmatized simply for owning a pager, showing the dangers of misjudging technological innovation.
This story isn’t just about pagers; it’s about how our fear of new technology can lead to harmful consequences. The pager panic is a reminder of the lasting implications tech-related moral panics can have on people’s lives. As we face new technologies today, it’s worth asking: Are we repeating the same mistakes? The history of pagers offers valuable lessons in how we approach change in light of the reactions echo in today’s debates over smartphones and social media today.

NiFT’s origin story is just one example of the current step change in the level of industry that can happen at home: The latest industrial revolution is empowering at-home engineers to craft revolutionary tech. With 2-day home delivery of parts and a wealth of how-to YouTube videos, genius is being created in garages across the US.
The idea of building a self-driving car at home would’ve been unthinkable just 10 years ago, but founder Shane, a former Ford engineer, decided he needed a project to keep busy during the pandemic. He enlisted his kids to build one in his Canton, Michigan garage in just 100 days. By day 9 they had already created a drivable vehicle.
Now, they’re building a flying ATV. Here’s the hidden technology making these DIY projects possible.

Indigenous Peoples are guardians of the world's forests, playing a vital role in preserving these crucial ecosystems. But as their land rights and livelihoods come under increasing threat, these defenders are standing strong, fighting for the land and working with organizations like Global Witness to expose the institutions responsible for its destruction.
Global Witness tracks reprisals against land and environmental defenders, exposing corporate wrongdoing and protecting the Indigenous communities that are essential to combating climate change. Their work reveals how industries like beef production, dominated by giants such as JBS, contribute to deforestation and human rights violations.
By shedding light on the financial institutions backing companies like JBS, Global Witness is exposing the impact of environmental damage and aiding defenders in their fight to protect and preserve our planet’s forests. With these wrongdoings on display, Global Witness can help bring justice to Indigenous communities and pressure governments to take action.
To keep our future safe, we must stand with Indigenous defenders and hold corporations accountable for their impact on our shared environment. This is only the beginning.

Could solar energy be the key to unlocking a future free from fossil fuels and extreme poverty? Casey Handmer, founder and CEO of Terraform Industries, believes so. His company is pioneering technology that could revolutionize how we produce and consume energy, potentially solving climate change and global energy inequality in one fell swoop.
Terraform Industries is developing machines that create synthetic natural gas from sunlight and air. It sounds like science fiction, but the technology is rooted in simple chemistry and powered by the rapidly advancing field of solar energy.
But Handmer's vision extends beyond just replacing fossil fuels. He sees solar energy as the catalyst for a new era of human progress. By providing cheap, abundant energy to every corner of the globe, we could potentially eliminate extreme poverty within our lifetimes. It's an ambitious goal, but one that Handmer believes we have a responsibility to pursue.

The daily lives of indigenous peoples are being criminalized, but they’re fighting back. Indigenous communities like the Maasai in Tanzania are being displaced as governments and corporations exploit their valuable resources. They are being relocated in the name of conservation, while their land is being used for profit.
Despite facing eviction and rights violations, these communities continue to protect their natural homelands. Indigenous people make up 6% of the global population but protect 60-80% of remaining biodiversity. Now, thanks to organizations like Indigenous Peoples' Rights International (IPRI), they are able to amplify their voices and fight for their rights on a global scale.
With IPRI and others’ help, the Maasai took their case to the UN, resulting in international pressure on Tanzania. The European Union even pulled its conservation funding in response.
As climate change threatens our planet, supporting indigenous land rights is crucial. These communities are not just fighting for their homes, but for the protection of vital ecosystems that benefit us all. Their story reminds us that respecting human rights and protecting the environment must go hand in hand.

In a world where innovation is often met with skepticism, longterm optimism is the driving force behind technological advancements. History has shown us time and again that even the most groundbreaking innovations—like the lightbulb, the bicycle, and the airplane—started as failures. But those who believed in the potential of these technologies saw past their initial limitations, and it was this belief that transformed the world into the one we have today.
Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, once doubted the first Macintosh's impact, despite being one of the creators. Time and time again, history has shown us that a forward-looking mindset and a belief in potential can transform even sub-par prototypes into lasting innovations. The optimism that drove Edison, the Wright brothers, and Steve Jobs is the same force that continues to shape our future.
Embracing tech optimism isn’t just about hope; it’s a recognition that progress often comes from persistence and a willingness to look beyond early setbacks. History shows that with a bit of patience and a positive outlook, even imperfect technology can evolve into something impactful.

It’s easy to underestimate the consequences of avoiding new technology, but doing so can be highly damaging to our society. Instead, we should embrace experimentation and seek to understand all the potential of new tech.
This dynamist approach gives us the opportunity to identify the parts of our technology that we would like to improve. This way, we can keep making progress – identifying the weak spots and strengthening them with increasingly innovative solutions.

The faces of climate change are those in communities already struggling with every kind of inequality. It’s time for this to change.
Every year, 3 million people of color are displaced by climate disasters, and 100,000 die from air pollution. Climate change impacts us all, but it hits hardest where racism, poverty, and pollution intersect. Historically disinvested communities bear the brunt of environmental degradation, highlighting the absolute need for community-based solutions to fight climate injustice.
The Solutions Project amplifies the voices at the frontlines of this crisis who also have the best solutions. Through supporting a movement of 300+ organizations, The Solutions Project is advancing renewable energy to clean water, regenerative agriculture and policy advocacy, and they aren’t stopping until widespread change has been made.

Could a 3D-robotic loom be the answer to making fast fashion faster and more sustainable? Unspun's patented loom (so proprietary that we had to blur it for the video) can create clothing that fits you seamlessly every time, with just a scan of your phone, and far less waste than other clothing production methods.
Unspun is pioneering a different method of apparel production out of Oakland, California. By utilizing three-dimensional weaving, the start-up is building garments from the ground up, perfectly customized for the wearer's dimensions.
So, how could this technology reform one of the world's dirtiest industries? Follow us inside the company's headquarters to find out.

Every year, the U.S. spends up to $100B on disasters. Despite this, a large percentage of the workers helping to rebuild are exploited – sometimes, never paid at all.
Resilience Force was founded by Saket Soni after witnessing Hurricane Katrina and discovering how these workers – particularly immigrants – are undervalued, overworked, and underpaid. Despite their experience and skill, workers are often taken advantage of, receiving little to no compensation and working in unsafe conditions.
Workers deserve better conditions and fair treatment; they shouldn’t have to sleep in their cars, and they shouldn’t be going hungry. Resilience Force is not only ensuring protections for these workers, but scaling this urgently-needed workforce and reinventing how industries and towns rise to the challenge of increasing disasters.

When you think of Haiti now, you might think of humanitarian crises, gang violence, and political turbulence, but that’s not the full story. Home of the first Black republic, new leaders are being cultivated to disrupt and rebuild the education system and transform Haiti.

Haiti is more than its current headlines, and these Haitian changemakers are working to make sure the world knows it.
As the birthplace of the first Black republic, Haiti is seeing new leaders emerge, challenging an education system that erases their identity. Anseye Pou Ayiti is a movement with a mission to transform Haitian schools and communities, connecting students to their culture in their native Kreyol language.
In Haiti, only 1% of students will reach university, and just 20% of teachers are formally trained. Yet, change is happening. In just ten years, Anseye Pou Ayiti has reached 116 primary partner schools, with nearly 90% of their students passing (compared to a 41% national average). This program ensures that teachers, parents and school leaders are change-agents in their communities, creating a growing wave of change across the country.
This is the new Haiti—a country where unity makes strength and education is a human right.
