A (hopefully) fun guide to a simple, robust, little, flying, Kerbal crewed rover that can quite easily be rocket deployed to anywhere on Kerbin. Designed for doing those multi-part surface measurements/reports/anomalies in one trip (and one landing). Plus will pootle around the low atmosphere "below X meters" contracts. It's cheap and low tech, meant for early career mode, with a pretty limited level of parts researched (only 3 items from the 90 science column). Also, it's kinda cute and silly! ;-)

Consequently, this is no tutorial. It's just some fun I had on my first ever crewed Mun mission. Quite a magical feeling to finally get there, after all the building, testing and careful orbital adjustments. :-)
I meant to just make a quick Gif to share on Reddit, but even this super-cut of the 2 hour expedition was a minute or two too long, so it became this tiny highlights video instead. Apologies for the black side-bars - I have a 16:10 aspect monitor and didn't initially plan to publish any of this to YouTube.
+ Game Mini-Review:
For those yet to play Kerbal Space Program, I hope this is an OK taster of what this brilliant build-then-pilot, guided sandbox game has to offer. A small appetiser at best; the video was definitely on the brief side! I've not covered the awesome aeroplane aspect and 'terrestrial' exploration at all, which I've had a lot of fun with too! I have a long way to go (literally) in exploring everything on offer.
I was actually surprised at how approachable the game is: no need to do any real maths, just slot bits together and see how it goes. The brilliant tutorials cover most of the counter-intuitive aspects and are probably worth buying the game for alone (in my opinion).
+ This Mun Mission:
The big issue I had, in the middle section of the video, was having landed directly on a perfectly evil slope, where upon sliding, my kerbal couldn't gain any traction to walk, but wasn't classed as airborne either, so I couldn't activate their RCS jetpack... Took a frustrating 10 minutes or so to get back aboard the lander, finally!
On the return trip, I also fast forwarded accidentally straight into Kerbin's atmosphere, without having disconnected the little rocket stacks. Hence the explosions there. Thankfully they just split off when the connector ring blew, without causing any damage. (Phew.)
I took a scientist, so I could reset the bulky materials bay (and goo) experiments. Hence why loose line of sight comms to Kerbin was a temporary issue - my 'Probodobodyne' control module went dead until deploying the big antenna, to connect with my relay in Mun orbit.
I managed to land 3 times, in 2 different biomes, falling just short of the 3rd, having run out of fuel (a lighter return pod would have been handy...). I was also able to gleen a bunch of different biome research and EVA reports while just flying over various areas on the way in and out.
With my vehicle design, I'm aware I massively over-provisioned fuel tanks for the pod's return trip. I'd based the fuel to mass ratio very loosely on the tutorial's Mun lander (then added a bunch more for safety). My follow-up mission had half the amount and still made it home, easily. It also netted over 2000 science, with the gravioli detector and seismometer on board too. My first Minmus trip was then even more fruitful!, I now have a stockpile of science (and money) and am wishing I'd started playing on a higher difficulty than 'normal' (for the most part).
I've been trying to explore the lower tech design possibilities before simply strapping on bigger, better rockets, tanks, engines, etc. Also, I've only just started learning about 'asparagus staging' and trying to figure out if there's a significantly more efficient launch profile. Very interesting and fun, with a lot to say about real world rocketry. It's boosted my appreciation for Elon Musk's ambitions. ;-)

I introduce most of the basic game-play concepts in the first half. Then, around 5m14s, there's a more detailed tutorial on how to build a Sentinel faction weapon pod carrier ship that can hold 16 (or more!) "Obliterator" LASER turrets (you are normally only able to have 2 of these in each ship design).
There seems to be a pretty active modding community involved with the game, but I haven't installed any, as yet, so this is an un-modded trick!

(If he didn't de-spawn.) As a test subject his size also makes him ideal for demonstrating the general features of the 'hoik' glitch, with sloped blocks.
Note: the chamber didn't need to be perfectly squared, as solid blocks are mostly ignored when you travel by hoik!; only the row of tiles directly above an up tooth and the row directly below a down tooth (or 2 rows, for Golem) needs to be clear.

Dart (and super dart) trap cooldown times have been increased from 3s to 3.33s (200 ticks). This breaks the firing pattern of all the designs shown in the video, with no darts firing half the time. The designs using faster mob types may be fixed by using a 1s timer instead and lengthening the plate run 10% (increasing the number of traps too). Alternatively, you will need to find the best plate in the run to wire back to the statue instead of the timer, to automatically re-trigger a new mob just *after* 3.33s. Statue Spawn Caps/Limits: Rule 1 - 0.5s cool-down on each of statue's 6 input tiles. (Note: Cool-down is also triggered by unsuccessful activations(!), when spawn is blocked by any rule 2 to 4.) Rule 2 - No spawn if 3 or more mobs within ~13 tiles of statue footprint. Rule 3 - No spawn if 6 or more mobs within ~39 tiles of statue. Rule 4 - No Spawn if 10 of statue's mob type in world.

It's only possible due to the lovely, new multi-coloured wiring options. Of course the lovely new rope (and other items available in hard-mode) make this a mere curiosity (not to mention it's extreme clunky-ness)... Also, far more efficient elevators exist that exploit a 'glitch' that uplifts players (and player sized mobs) when jammed into a sloped block.

The inspiration for these experiments with video feedback loops (in September 2007 and April 2008) came from reading "I am a Strange Loop" by Douglas Hofstadter (features in the video; a highly recommended read). Apart from the obvious hands in frame, the odd bit of light painting with a torch (and a couple of window edges), all the interesting details, patterns, colours, etc, emerged spontaneously in the video loop: complex structure from 'nothing', much like boot strapping one's own consciousness from nowhere, all strange and loopy...
The first part filmed with a Fuji Finpix S9600 (and the CRT TV in my student house), the rest done using my 2MP Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks pointed straight at my 17" Sony TFT monitor.
