This track leads us into a more general conversation about current college problems, including the anti-intellectual and anti-critical thinking trends of the recent years.
I approached this personal development topic through the lens of fitness because Michael has expressed that the pursuit continues to be a challenge for him. I thought it would be more interesting to discuss a subject where Michael is trying to put the puzzle pieces together, versus one of his areas of expertise (anarchist philosophy, objectivism, North Korea and the New Right).
For me, fitness has proven to be the foundation of a better life, and great teacher for any personal development pursuit. Michael and I are extremely different people, despite coming from similar philosophical backgrounds, but I have identified with him the most when listening to him talk about his fitness, eating and body issues.

The conversation turns to the cost of university, the diluted degree, and what that degree signals to employers. They spell out the reasons one would decide to attend college, and how they can best utilize their time and money. This an excerpt from a longer conversation in which they talk more about the alternatives to a college degree, and how conformity plays into one’s market value.
"Hi Brett, I am an elementary school teacher and a relatively new listener to your show. When the School Walkout happened, I was compelled to write about it. Then, I heard your latest episode with Thad Russell! Many of the thoughts you shared are also echoed in my piece. Perhaps I am preaching to the choir here, but I would like to share my perspective anonymously somehow. .... Thank you for your time and consideration, and for the wonderful forum you've created through School Sucks.
Thaddeus Russell returns to examine the bigger picture. We'll discuss the fetish-ization of children by both the left and the right. Other themes include politics as a performance on a stage, dangers of absolutist thinking, Manichaeism (the age-old religious idea of fighting the battle against the darkness on the side of the light, and the comfort and illusion of moral superiority that idea brings), why this phenomenon does NOT require "crisis actors," and the harnessing of teenage angst towards political ends.
Also: The Next Renegade University and School Sucks Project event is happening May 11-13 in the original renegade city of New Orleans. At the end of this podcast we'll discuss some of the details and the new features. I'll talk about that + the use of children as moral shields, the CNN town hall, why people don't actually want to understand this issue, mental health, and the cruelty of providing passionate teenagers with the illusion of knowledge.

Principle #5: Embrace Your Incompetence Ego is perhaps the biggest obstacle in the way of learning. People get wrapped up in the appearance of competence or the appearance of knowledge, and they rarely allow themselves to admit being wrong. You might think of ego as a huge methodological error. In reality, failure is your best friend. Failure is immediate feedback that “something is wrong.” And it’s a necessary part of the process for everyone. You literally cannot get from beginner to expert without failing and being wrong.

That includes most “experts”, or instructors, in everything from the world of ideas, back to the martial arts, or even basic practical skills.

Principle #1: Technique The method in which you accomplish what you’re trying to do. It’s the concrete “how”. - People have heroes, heroes become superhuman, godly – they look up to but never into people - high-level performers simply have better technique than their competition. They are closer to “the right way of doing X” than other people. - Almost everybody does everything incorrectly? - Practice makes perfect? - Steve's self-education in economics? - Credentialing
